SWM 16 install

got the kit yesterday. switch, power inserter and two 1x8 splitters. plan on putting it up Monday.
wanted to get it going before the Genie gets here. have 3 HR-20 100 now in the system.

should i just use swm 2 for all six tuners or put two on swm 1 ? or something else.
from what i've read the Genie should be on swm 1.

I'd put the Genie on SWM1 and the rest with a 4 way splitter (unless they make a 3 way) on SWM2
All those extra ports not being used on the SWm splitters can sometimes cause issues

No, it does not matter how you configure your DVRs. As long as you don't have more than eight tuners per "side" of the SWM16. And the genie can go on SWM2 with no problems.
If you have one DVR with a long cable run, give it its own "side" of the SWM16 just in case you have a signal attenuation problem.

A 4-way is ideal but an 8-way will be fine as long as the spare 5 ports are still terminated.

You are getting ports and tuners confused. Each DVR has two tuners but only uses one cable and therefore only one port on a splitter. A genie has five tuners but only uses one port.
If you put three DVRs on one "side" of the SWM16, that only uses three ports (cables) so a four-way splitter will work fine. So will an eight-way, with the empty ports terminated. Then you would have the Genie on the other side of the SWM16, using up five tuners but only needing a single port, so no splitter needed.
The power inserter would then go either on a spare connector on the four-way or eight way splitter (has to be the red power-passing connector) or connected to the special power connector on the SWM16.

Personally I always use the least possible number of splits, because it gives the strongest signal at the receivers, but unless you have some very long runs to the DVRs, an eight-way splitter is fine - let's put it this way, if you have to buy a splitter, you can get a four-way. If DirecTv does an installation, they will almost certainly use a eight-way.

if so which one ?

do they still need those b band converters ?

My HR20 - 700 had a crippled tuner 1, wouldn't work with either SL5 LNB, when I went to SWM it came back to life using tuner 1 as the input ... (wouldn't get the HD channels)no b-band needed with it, not sure about yours.

No b band convertors when using a swm setup, either lnb or switch.

maybe i should start over. i read a bunch of stuff here and other places since my hr23 died (12-1), then waited a week for this swm kit to get here. now a week later it seems wasted my time, all that reading. lol

#1 not at all interested in accessing from all/any dvrs over a network. just not needed or wanted.

my dish is a 2006 model with 4 outputs........... can i use this ?

That's the original side car type dish. It can't use a swm lnb, but a swm multiswitch, swm8/16, can be used just like with a Slimline dish.

The Phase III would work, but not as good as the slimline (I use a Phase III camping)you would likely be missing channels etc. ...

since i won't use the whole home set up, can i just remove the b band converters and hook up the 2 rg6 cables to the dvr's and put the 2 rg6 cabes to one of the 1x8 splitters ?

You need to run four cables from the dish to the swm16. No b band convertors anywhere! Connect the splitters to the swm1 and swm2 ports, capping any unused ports with 75 ohm terminators. They should come with the splitter.

Only one cable from the swm16 to the Genie, and one for each dvr from the splitter (off the swm16) to the dvr. You don't have to connect the DECAs. Whole home isn't required to be installed afaik, but you do have to pay for it when you have a Genie.
