just love how twc is now saying direct TV viewers life's are in danger without them. honestly I don't think most of us even noticed it went dark. I like how one person on the radio called it the weather less channel. twc keeps posting on Facebook the public safety is at risk.

I have been watching TWC now for a few hours and not one mention of Directv. I think they are over it now.

You mean they noticed the deafening silence, followed by scattered laughter?

What would be the point of mentioning D* on the air? The viewers who would hear it don't care.

DIRECTV CEO Mike White's Letter to Customers

I would like to set the record straight on another issue. The Weather Channel, which is owned by hedge funds and one of our competitors, is claiming that millions of customers are leaving DIRECTV as a result of this impasse. I know you are only concerned with your household, but I can assure you 99.9995% of our current customers have voted to stay on the DIRECTV platform, because they understand what we are trying to accomplish in these contract talks. I only bring this issue up because you should know that you’re not alone in being willing to take a stand on these out-of-control content price increases.

Finally, I’m sorry that The Weather Channel has taken this public. You should not be pulled into the process. I’m disappointed that a group who used to be such great partners in the past, have resorted to nasty “Chicken Little” scare tactics in an attempt to achieve their financial goals. A public mudslinging campaign and expensive newspaper ads are not going to solve the problem.

Unfortunately, he did not slam shut the door. I'd rather see a firm "It's over, we have no plans to reconsider."

That's a very un-CEO like letter, but refreshing to see !

I thought it was pretty good - clean cut and professional - to the customers.

Not sure what you meant by un-CEO like, but if you meant that many CEOs today are blatant marketing tools than I find a letter like this refreshing.

Usually, anything put out by a CEO goes by the public relations group, legal, and so on and is a vastly different statement than what it was when the CEO first wrote it up

I agree. I wish he had done that. He did keep the door open and I sincerely think at some point the weather Channel will be back on Directv. I hope not though.

The Weather Channel knows that if they do it for a lower cost then all other contract negotiations will also lead to a lower price as well costing them much more.

Shameless plugs during the NHL Stadium Series game at Yankee Stadium in the Pregame show. "The Weather Channel goes straight to the point." Then after it started to snow, one of the Ranger's coaches made a comment about the prediction being wrong.

Weather (used to be) Channel pr blunders:
*they take the fight public, the public speaks, and if this site is any barometer, it is atleast 20 to 1 against TWC.
*the keeptheweatherchannel site uses testimonials from 2 non profits, Save The Children and American Red Cross. I write both and the Red Cross quickly dismisses taking sides saying their comment was from a year ago. Mud gets splashed on 2 non profits.
*keeptheweatherchannel encourages you to contact your Congressman. Calling your congressman about such a business fight borders on insanity.
*This forum and TWC's own FB page comments are extremely critical of the reality shows.
*This whole fight proved to Direct that very, very few depend on TWC for anything weather anymore. Dish better be watching, they will be in a great bargaining position in 3 years.
*On TWC site, after signal pulled from Direct, photos of Cantore and Roker looking like someone threw their Nutty Buddy in the mud appeared. That helped, sure.
*Cantore spouts off about NWS, backtracks later when NWS is not too happy about it.
*Interview with David Kenny indicates a new reality show on the horizon. "He doesn't get it" should be tattooed on his forehead.
*Naming winter storms receives criticism everywhere, again, they don't get it and ignore feedback.
*The release today about Direct shows TWC desperation. The folks at Direct are relaxing that negotiations are over, TWC looks foolish.
*TWC airs pure weather and dumps the reality shows for a day or so prior to the deadine with Direct, those watching Dish get reality programs back at midnight. Poor poor judgement and shows what they are made of.
*IF, IF, some sane person at TWC made the decision to bull Highway Boo Boo and Freaks, TWC is a damaged good now, that would take years to repair. Accuweather needs to get on the air yesterday, and Weather Nation is doing good and quite reminiscent of the early Weather Channel.

Somewhere on this site, another poster (and sorry I can't find it for credit to the poster) mentions something interesting, MTV doesn't due music videos anymore, Court TV stopped showing court, TLC is anything but learning now, and somewhere along the way, management at TWC moved their direction. Maybe they could no longer afford staffing at night and other hours to have 24 hour coverage... But as I said earlier, they are handing an audience of weather nerds on a silver platter to Weather Nation and others...

In my broadcast career, I watched many corporations come in and take a radio station and change a format, "our audience is changing" they would say, we have to program to another audience... that may be true... But don't sit in the corner and squall about Direct TV taking anything from you Weather Channel, you have made this storm, which I hereby name DavidKennyScrewUp...

I don't know if you can believe

But they are claiming that over 200,000 morons have pledged to switch providers over a temporary outage of TWC.

As for putting safety at risk, it is commonplace for TWC to continue running reality programming during severe weather outbreaks. I don't know when an outbreak of sever weather becomes big enough for TWC to interrupt their reality programming, but it seems as though they only care about severe weather when it affects large population centers, particularly on the east coast.

Edit: here is link with tweets from Jim Cantore following an 2010 incident where TWC stayed with entertainment programming during a fatal tornado event:
