A few surprises from Vivek!

Well with only 2 people in my house and 6 flat screens and a 120 inch projection screen, I probably am a little over the norm. And since I have DirecTV and Dish Network active as well, I know I am over average.. I don't need timer integration.. What I want is to be able to see my external drives across all Hoppers and Joeys without all the hassle.. It's a pain having to switch the drives from one Hopper to the other.

Yes. As features were added to the Hopper, performance has gotten slower. However, before it was released, it was lightening fast. So fast, in fact, that it was difficult to use. So, they throttled it back to make it easier for the average human.

The question now is: have they forgotten to remove the original throttling code, and, is the slowdown from the added features on top of the original slowdown from the throttling?

That had more to do with how fast the guide moved when you paged up and down it. To make that go slower, I doubt they would have had to slow the entire system down. That's just sloppy. What needs to be done are resource and code optimizations which are time consuming to implement and test to make sure those changes don't break other features. They have limited human resources to begin with.

The code optimization should have been part of the coding process for every aspect of every SW update, not something done separately.

Sloppy and/or bloated code should not be released at all, ever. Or, certainly, they should make a concerted effort not to.

New features need to take a backseat to bug fixes. Quality, not quantity.

When GaryPen mentioned throttling the first time, I wasn't sure what he meant, but now that you mention that Dish had to slow down the guide, I do remember this. I have to agree that they should have been able to just slow down the guide and not the entire system.

Speaking of that "throttling", I'd love to have a checkbox (option) to turn it off and try it ! :D

Was it just the guide, though? What about all of the menus, DVR, OnDemand, etc?

My wife bitched when I took her cable box away and replaced it with a DVR. Then she bitched when I replaced the DVR with an HR-21. Then she bitched when I replaced the HR-21 with an HR-24. Then she bitched when I replaced the HR-24 with a VIP722K. Then she bitched when I replaced the 722K with a Hopper 2K. She hasn't bitched for more than 2 years now but if my Hopper ever steals one of her timers it's gonna be bitchin' time again. Please Dish, make timer sharing optional for my peace and quiet.

That's a lot of bitching :)
Not to be literally offensive.

Let's see, we have a 61" HDTV as our primary TV, with a HWS. We have a 52" (or is it 55"?) LCD in our MBR, with a HWS. We have a 36" CRT SDTV downstairs with a digital converter box and DVD player ( no sat). And a 27" CRT SDTV in the exercise room with a DVD player and an owned Joey. And a 13" CRT SDTV on a shelf that I keep forgetting to toss.

Considering deactivating the Joey and dropping the protection plan. If I had to, I could return a HWS and maybe just get by with one. Depends on how our finances go.

Just try talking the other half into waiting a day so you can use auto-hop then no need for trigger-finger fast forward. Just try.

LOL KKlare, not with my wife. When we are watching a recording with AutoHop enabled, as soon the program ends a segment and a commercial starts, my marching orders is "I better trigger-finger the Fast Forward button one time to speed things up". That way my other half doesn't have to watch about 3 seconds of commercial. What we go thru to please the Boss!!

I remember the first gen hopper, channel changing was fast but now on the hopper with Sling it is ok but not near what it used to be.

My wife and I don't watch tv all that much bc of opposite work schedules but usually she controls the remote. She records a lot of shows and I don't bc most shows I like are on prime time so I don't record much. There has been shows I liked but were cancelled due to poor ratings.

Right, don't want to go to the doghouse!! :(

I have Two Hoppers. This is great news.
I run out of tuners all the time and have to run upstairs to the other Hopper to set it to record there.
Thank You Dish.

P.S. my Hoppers have slowed down since I got them.
