No different than a Hopper works just fine on a non-HDTV. 4K is just one of the possible output resolutions.

Can't see it replacing the Joey. It will be interesting to see how Dish markets it -- I could see it being a premium offer (for now), although they don't really do that with any equipment nowadays, do they ? Well, as far as new customers go, they don't have much restrictions in what they will give away.

Just to get clarification, there has been discussion about this. Is the Hopper 4K capable, as far as technical specs? If not, Why not, if so, what is required for it to be capable of transmitting the 4K?

No it is not. It does not support the HVEC that the 4K uses.

It doesn't "transmit" it as much as it simply allows it to pass-through untouched (or un-processed).

I wouldn't expect anything for a year or two. At this point having a 4K Joey is the best bet as it give you the best experience.

Isn't direct supposed to be coming out with a 4k receiver?

If someone needs 4k from Dish, just get a 4k Joey and swap locations, if necessary. I'd guess that someone who has a 4k TV probably has more than one TV and will already have a Hopper/Joey setup.

yes, folks with 4K TV's or any larger sized tv, probably have that as their main tv..............and most likely want the main focus of the dish system....the hopper, connected to that tv
just seems like Dish is going about the process in reverse
