Sling TV

Yes, more content is good. However, if they get to the same high prices as a Dish or cable sub with the restrictions they have in place, they'll kill their "Golden Goose" before it can even get to Thanksgiving.

IMO, Dish should loss-leader this for at least a year or so, before they monkey around with it too much.
But that's not really the consumer's problem. It's the provider's problem. If the add-on get too expensive or the additions start adding up to be equal or more than cable or satellite then people will just cancel to go to something else. This is getting pretty close to al-la-carte. In theory a-la-carte is great, you pick the channels you want and not pay for the ones you don't want. But the math is just not going to work out. Its not like it would ever be $1 a channel or something. The economy of TV is selling ads across all the channels a company owns. To do that they need to ensure those channels are in your channel list.

Not sure this is a viable option for those of us (which is almost everyone) who have monthly data caps. If you're streaming EVERYTHING you watch, and watch hours and hours on a daily basis, you'll hit your cap before half the month is over.

Data caps could certainly be a concern, even moreso down the road if this and similar services become more popular.
My uverse has a supposed cap, but I have never had them enforce it around here, or Ive never come close.
The next few months will be more telling for my situation.

So assuming an average of 4mbps streaming, that is 0.5 mB per second. So 1 GB per 2000 seconds, little over 33 minutes. If your cap is 250GB then you get about 120 Hours (4 hours a day on average) or so of TV before you hit the cap. And that is only if you are streaming, so it could become an issue if you have a cap.

What cap? :grinbounce

We stream 90% of the time: Netflix, PBS Kids, Hulu, Amazon, Vudu

Oct-Nov: 140gb
Nov-Dec: 245gb
Dec-Jan: 180gb (not home for 10 days)
Jan-Feb: 194gb and 4 days to go.

Related but off topic a little too.

Cox sent me notices several times toward the end of 2013 about going over the 250gb cap on the 25/3 service and I think I got 1 after that was bumped to 50/5 in early 2014. I'm on the 100/10 service now and haven't received any notices and I've been 30GB over each of the last few months. My dad said he went 18GB over 250gb cap on their Las Vegas Cox service this past month, since they are using the Slingbox to watch dvr back in Oklahoma.

I'm not sure what is considered part of data usage anymore, because if you look at the Cox Las Vegas account and the Cox Oklahoma account on a daily basis, the amounts of data are not even close on days that they used the Sling for several hours. Las Vegas would show 20-25Gb on days with several hours of use, but the Oklahoma account wouldn't show more than 1-2GB, even thought the Slingbox is uploading from Oklahoma home.

As for SlingTv, I don't have a data cap thru Windstream at my lake house or for my business line at home, so I had the Roku connected to that, when I was using SlingTv last week.

I just avoided the whole issue. switched my residential HSI to business class with comcast. Better service, better speeds, different tiers that residential can't get and basically the same prices with no caps

Horsed around yesterday w/ SLING International last night..... pretty impressive quantity of channels.

Huh. I had to look that one up! It's the new name for DishWorld. They now have 14 English channels, but this is an add on requiring some other package. And there are still no Russian channels. :( What's up with that?

My first impression was the sports line-up was pretty impressive...Never heard of BBC Babies though.
Kinda interesting EBRU TV is on there when its free on Roku

Having a Tivo Roamio for OTA, Netflix and Amazon Prime, I think Directv is about to get the boot. We rarely watch live tv, and if we are it is usually the wife watching Food/Cooking/DYI or us watching sports. All that is covered with this because I already record locals and get my cable network shows via Tivo download from Amazon.

I could go from $140/month to $35/month. That is HUGE! My only fear is 6mbps DSL, but, I get 1080 Netflix and Watch ESPN feeds (not ESPN3) look very good on my streaming now.

My only issue is losing Cinemax, HBO, Starz and Showtime, but I can work on those other ways I guess.

As long as you dont have other stuff sucking up bandwidth at the same time you should be fine. I think the highest I have seen it take is on espn and that maxes between 4.8-5 or so.

Yeah, usually at night we are just relaxing and watching tv, so nothing else is going on. Any tivo downloads happen during the day when we arent there.

It is very tempting to say the least. Id have to wrap up this season of Banshee on Cinemax before I swapped, but that would not be too hard to do. And I think the HBO service is supposed to launch with GoT.

My DSL hits 5.6 to 5.8 just about all the time on speed tests. Our area is fiber to the curb, so I get almost my 6mbps since I do not share with anyone else.

Easy enough to check with a free trial before you decide one way or the other.
