Is a Roku 4 with 4K coming this way?

My area still doesn't have the speed for 4k internet wise, unless I move outside city limits. Of course my town was also the last to get a sewer system because one of the board member's relatives made a living from draining septic tanks after big rain storms.

Here is more on it..... Roku Regulatory Filings Hint at New Devices https://www.yahoo.com/movies/s/regulatory-filings-hint-roku-devices-171720143.html
A number of filings with the Federal Communications Commission suggest that Roku is getting ready to introduce updated streaming devices in time for the holiday season.Filings for the Roku 2 and Roku 3 streaming devices passed the FCC Wednesday, indicating that the company may be getting ready to introduce new versions for both devices.A Roku rep declined to comment.Altogether, the FCC filings mention a total of six different models, identified by the model numbers 4210X, 4230X, 4210X1, 4230X1, 4200X1 and 4205X1. Photos accompanying the filings show two streaming boxes that look virtually identical to the existing Roku 2 and Roku 3 devices, and the filings themselves don’t offer many clues about new features either. There had been some rumors that Roku may be introducing a 4K-capable streaming box. The company said earlier this year that it was beginning to support 4K video playback for TV sets built by partners like TCL, but didn’t disclose any plans for 4K-capable streaming boxes at the time.Meanwhile, Roku informed users of older, “classic” boxes earlier this month that it is phasing out support for those models.Roku’s new models come as competitors are introducing significant upgrades to their streaming devices as well: Apple’s new Apple TV is the company’s biggest update since the introduction of the device, and Amazon’s new Fire TV is the first major streaming box selling for less than $100 that supports 4K video playback.

Just got a Roku 3 ...
Hope I didn't make a mistake not waiting.

When I talked to Roku support online , they said they didn't know anything about a 4 ... but that doesn't surprise me.

Roku 4 Supports 4K, On Sale Today, Ships in October

After weeks of rumors Roku has formally announced the Roky 4. According to a Roku press release, the new device will support 802.11ac, 4K video, feature an updated version of the company's OS (Roku OS 7), more powerful hardware, and a larger, flatter form factor. The device also sports a largely revamped 4K category focus, and will also help you find a lost remote.

Roku says the company is taking pre-orders for the device starting today, and it will ship sometime this month.

The new device "provides an amazing 4K experience with powerful performance and brilliant picture, at up to 60 frames per second on 4K TVs, and access to the most streaming channels with 4K entertainment, plus innovative features like Remote Finder," notes Roku.

Roku OS 7 will be rolled out to current-generation Roku players and Roku TVs through a software update beginning in mid-October and is expected to be completed in November.

There's some additional detail on the new Roku 4 over at the Roku website.

While I need a new Roku, I am waiting to see what apps the new Apple TV will offer, hopefully more TV apps like what the iPad has like TNT, Food Network, Sci Fi, etc.

I thought this was strange from the spec list. 802.11ac MIMO dual-band wireless but only 10/100 Base-T Ethernet. You would think wired would have been gig capable as well.

I see absolutely no point in implementing GigE on a UHD multimedia client device.

The theoretical maximum on bandwidth required is less than half the capacity of Fast Ethernet and wired doesn't have to share with everything else on the network as wireless (and wired RF protocols) do.

I wish that they add more codecs to the Roku 4, so I can stream without transcoding (i.e. Plex) before going to the Roku. Tried Plex on an Atom-based RAID to my Roku and it was really bad. So, I use my $35 rasberrypi and XBMC (with MPEG-2 and VCL codecs) to watch my videos instead, but it would be nice to have the Roku 4 do the same. The video files are ripped using makemkv via VortexBox.

Unless you have a 4K TV or plan to get one in the very near future you will be fine with a Roku 3. My Roku 2XD that Dish gave us during the AMC dispute a few years ago is finally starting to crap out. It randomly reboots if I watch video on it for more than an hour or so. It's been hooked to a bedroom TV that won't be upgraded for a long time so I see no point in spending more for the Roku 4.

I don't even think the Roku 3 is probably necessary for my purposes. I don't want to play games on a Roku and I have no use for the headphone port in the remote. I have been checking things out lately and it seems like I would probably be fine with a Roku 2, Roku Stick, or even a Roku 1.

Thanks for the reminder, the 4 if the major difference is just the 4k then yes, I'm fine with it.
When I had the 2, I was having trouble getting shows from my tab 4 to play on the TV, so I upgraded to the 4, only had the 2 for a day .... so far the 3 works great but haven't used it all that much .... have been able to watch the Toledo Rockets football games all year on my TV so far so THAT'S a plus !

After the Fire TV failure, I ordered a Roku 4. Hopefully it won't disappoint. My 2 is so slow on things like Youtube compared to my BD player.

S~

I don't do those things either but really love the speed, smooth navigating and rf remote on the roku 3. My biggest disappointment is HboGo on the roku 3. Sometimes it works sometimes not(buffering). Everything else works fine when this won't, this is a wired connection also. Come to find out it's widely complained about after some research.

What convinced me this was a roku problem is when I streamed the same show off the HboGo app on my android to chromecast and it was flawless. I hope this is fixed with the roku 4. I wouldn't mind changing out 1 of my older boxes to this, but gonna wait and see.
