H3 has 16 tuners BTW. Not 18 ....

Yes and just to add it will use one tuner of those 16 to record all 4 of the big 4 local networks.
And if you have the OTA usb module that adds another.

So you could record a total of 20 different programs if you choose to with OTA
19 without OTA.

Not trying to change the subject to Dish, but I have wondered why they (Dish Network) doesn't do something like this with channels that they have that are streaming on SlingTV. One would think that they have the capability to do it. Probably licensing from the content providers.

Because they're run by morons. You seen their stock price lately?

True. ..

But in all honesty that's really an insane amount of tuners.

How many subscribers really need all of those?

And if you do then like the family here now at 7 people we have the near equivalent anyway with a Genie (HR54) and 5 HR24s for 15 tuners total and I must say no one ever experiences a recording conflict to my knowledge.

Still amazes me that people think that they can find 16+ things to Record at the SAME TIME.

Sure is nice knowing that my wife and I can set all of our timers and ones for our kids without having to think about the time they're on or what Hopper they're on. Love it.

They may be morons but they did come out with a receiver that can output 4K when available, and has 16 tuners. But I'll shut up and not make this a "war zone" thread.

1 person? doubtful, but a family of 5 or 6, i can see it
But that really points to the issue right there why Dish needs the H3...

As Dish also created the H3 with all those tuners out of necessity more than anything else. Because unlike DIRECTV, their decision early on to not have the ViP receivers integrate with the Hopper-Joeys in the same installation limited Dish to only a server-client topology going foward. Therefore they have no choice but to increase the number of tuners on the Hopper server this way to avoid recording conflicts for installs used by a large number of users such as a family of 6 or 7.

But that sort of urgency really doesn't on DIRECTV's side to that degree because their STB receivers will integrate with the Genie-Mini Genie system.

So they are not limited to only a server-client topology and their subs. can easily scale setups to increase tuners by adding H25 receivers and/or HR24 DVRs after any Genie-clients instead of only being limited to needing more tuners on the Genie server.

for existing clients, integrating a genie into existing system is fine.
for new clients they want way to much for an hr24, or other dvr, its not cost effective for new people to build a system like that

Although in our household where everyone, save for one teenager, is an adult, all want their own independent boxes. And view their timers and other settings on them as their own business and don't want others messing with them.

The server-client model has always been is a big "no-sale" around here ...

It's great to have options.

But even if not quite as cost effective as purchasing clients as you say, the point is the option is still nevertheless there. Whereas with Dish you have no option. It's either the server-client model or nothing. Thus the need for the H3 with all these tuners to try and compensate for only offering a single basic install model.

Not really true, lease 2 Hoppers and 6 Joeys, and some customers have purchased and installed several more. Not saying that the Hopper 3 plus 6 Joeys isn't spectacular with speed, 4k, 16 tuners, and unlimited account based EHDs to supplement storage, and/or transfer to new equipment, and playable from the Hopper.

Sure, multiple Hoppers;

But that was only 6 independent tuners total. You see server-client topologies don't scale well without increasing tuners on the server like the H3.

And then how would that have worked for those that dislike clients such as here?

Six Hoppers?

What kind of cost and wiring nightmare would that have been assuming it's technically possible and Dish would even allow it to begin with?

If you go over to the Dish forums, you will find that there are customers that are using 3 and 4 Hoppers without difficulty. 2 Hoppers is only a limit for lease, not purchase.
