So I just got a new Samsung smart TV and pq seems terrible now thru dish but netflix and vudu look incredible. Was my old 1080p Vizio just not nice enough to notice the compression?

IMO Dish is a bit "soft" compared to other providers I have had in the past (Comcast, TWC, and FiOS). At least it's better than uVerse. uVerse HD PQ is the pits.

It seems to depend on what channel I'm watching it seems. The football game looked decent. Watched the show better things and it looked overly compressed. In fact almost anything on fx looked bad. Watching hotel hell on the DVR looks great though

I agree. I just purchased the Samsung ks8000 series tv and a lot of channels look like crap. Hgtv maybe one of the worst. Dish's over compression is really showing on the newer tvs. If I was out of contract, I would seriously consider switching to Direct.

I agree. I only watched about 4 channels with this tv and 3 of them didn't look good. A movie I watched on vudu really made the tv look great though

I had a Samsung hdtv for about three days about a year ago and the colors were never right on people's faces . Everyone either looked like a Simpson character or an orange Cheeto. I quickly took that tv back because no matter what I did on picture adjustments made no difference.

Considering just about everything I watch- including Netflix goes through my hopper , the picture has to look good using DISH. I base all my tv buying decisions on this one factor and have since early days of HD. Used to take my Dvr with me no to the store and plug it in to the tv model I was interested in to see how it looked with DISH.

I have a new (got in April) Sony XBR65X930D 65" and the picture from Dish looks better than it did on the 60" Samsung it replaced.
Samsung never impressed.
Its more Hype than actual PQ.
Thats why I ended up with the Vizio M series.
Way more for the money, and far better PQ than anything I could see from Samsung under $1000.

But next I'm going back to all Sony.
I've had nothing but Sony from the 1990s up until 2007, and the PQ was great, and Never Hiccups with audio synchronization , always easy calibrated.
The Vizio is nice, and functionality is great PQ is awesome, But it still has the Cheap factor that makes me wonder whats in store as far as reliability in the future.

The old tv is a Vizio it's still works great but it's lcd and it's starting to look like the back light is losing life so I figured it was time to get a new one it's about 6 or 7 years old so I'd say it lasted awhile. I'm not going to get rid of it. It's going to replace the LG burned an image into a couple years back

I set my output from my Dish receiver to 720p from 1080i. Seemed to help with the compression artifacts and motion blur. Progressive will almost always look better than interlaced. Have you tried the 720p setting?

I haven't tried that I'll have to give it a shot

Now that I have seen the Hopper and played with it I think those that say it is a matter of calibrating the TV to the receiver have it right. The hopper picture on my Daughter's TV looks sharper to me than my VIP picture on my TV. But it also meant turning down the sharpness some and after going through the calibration with WOW turning down contrast some or else it was too sharp making it look compressed. Everyone there helping to get her set in the house she bought all thought the picture was excellent from the Hopper 3 she has, and she immediately commented it was better than what she got from Charter. I noticed it when using my own TV I brought over for the install when her TV was not there. I immediately saw a little sharper picture but also thought I would need to recalibrate my TV if I was using the Hopper.
There are enough posts of people who are not hit and run (troll) posters about the PQ of the Hopper, and that along with what I saw indicate the TV makes a difference and getting it adjusted correctly is important.

By the way, on my VIP on my professionally calibrated 4K 65" large screen TV DISH looks very good, However I saw mentioned FX and "Better Things" as looking bad, well I watched that premier last night and it was not very good PQ. Happens with certain shows on channels. Some look sterling others blah but that isn't DISH I see that on Charter all the time also, as well as Brighthouse. Also certain rerun shows on USA can look dull. But then new episodes of "The Middle" as one example look great also most live shows.
