MANY HD CHANNELS GONE ON 72 WEST?

I've been toying with the idea of replacing the ViP 722 we use for our vacation home with a pair of ViP 211s to eliminate the DVR fee. We're not doing much recording but like/need the pause / rewind feature. So the question is, do I need to do this now before the Oct 1. ViP sunset? The ViP 211k has been in use since I moved to the Hopper 3, but not on this account. Sounds like I would need to make a trip in September to get it all set up.

Or, it looks like I could replace the ViP 722 with a Wally (or pair of) cheap enough.

Yes; a Wallly or two should suffice even if you delay until it's convenient. Alternatively, 211k's should be even cheaper (I haven't checked) and come with a built-in OTA tuner to save even more (if that's important).

I don't see why they don't make the Hopper lite like a Wally that can be able to do at least 2 sat tuners and then add an ota module to get two ota channels and add your own hard drive and you end up with an updated 722k. Then no DVR FEE.:bigok The only feature lacking would be the tv 2 feature. Now if they would also add the Prime time anytime feature that can use one tuner to record all the big four local networks, you could get by with just this receiver and save the dvr fee. It would really be a nice receiver for people like my parents who watch a lot of locals and some cable like networks.
I do believe that Dish is actually working on doing just that. ;)

In pondering the moves from 72.7 to 61.5, this possible scenario occurred to me with zero knowledge of the technical capabilities involved other than the ability to move sats around. Could the move be essentially a temporary one to free up all of the transponders on 72.7 before moving the 77 bird or another sat into the 72.7 slot, relinquishing the Nimiq 5 back to the Canadian owner at the end of the lease in 2019? The new 72.7 sat could then be populated as needed. With the advent of the DPH LNBF, the 77 has been unreachable by many eastern arc Hopper 3 users anyway without an added wing dish. Ok, the technically superior among us can tear that idea apart now... :biggrin

Plus, that 72W DBS slot is assigned to Canada, so it must be a Canadian owned and operated satellite there. Echostar has special authority granted by the FCC and their Canadian counterpart the CRTC to serve American homes from that bird.

This is not exactly about Eastern Arc, but just a thought.

I wonder how many legacy 311/22 and 625 installs are left out in the field.

Could Dish perhaps be pondering a full MPEG4 conversion on the Western Arc to free more space for things like 4K? And more HD.

The 311/22 and 625s have to be getting on up 12 to 15 years old

The 622 was released in 2006 I believe.

Yep, I was aware of that issue, but I didn't know if any Dish/FCC/CRTC talks might have been taking place in the background to work that out.

Nah. At 77 is QuetzSat1 which is a Mexican satellite that DISH leases.

I think they're getting ready to do something...
Dish has over 100 percent redundancy operating or parked at 61.5w.

The 10 year lease end is rapidly approaching for nimiq..

My bet is they are demonstrating to nimiq owners that they can live without 72w and expect to pay a reduced amount for a lease extension.

I first thought it was a power failure in one of the birds, but after I saw all the swaps around in both arcs easter and western I have to think they are making space, I believe someone her posted and I agree they're trying to make space to broadcast some 4K channels, you can see they also have made space @ 119° so the changes are not only on Eastern arc 72.7° we'll have to sit and wait......

In any event, you can have all the redundancy you want. You still only have authority to transmit on a certain number of frequencies.

Name one broadcaster offering a 4K channel or even announced one coming soon ( and the DirecTV channel does not count since they produce that themselves for their customers only ).

Dish could 'create' their own channel as well. They do it with their PPV channels.
Besides, we do not know what is coming down the pipeline.

Dish does not own any content to create their own 4K channel, they never have gone into the content business, I have said before they should have ( as much as I hate them, look at how big Comcast is after buying Universal) instead of wasting money on all this unused spectrum they have the rights to.

I know they are not in the content business. Neither is DirecTV/AT&T at this time until the TW acquisition is competed (which is soon). Where do they get content? They buy the rights to it, just like Dish could do.

I don't have to name one, that is not the point here (it's a guess), the point here is to see if someone has the info why they are moving around channels and freeing up space, whats your guess?
FYI: in the past some channels have been added with the broadcaster not having all HD, they upgrade artificially with video processors I have no doubt they can do it again with 4K......

I hope all MPVDs and Networks realize investing in 4K is pointless, since there is little or no difference (not to mention compression) to 1080i unless you have a 65" or bigger TV.
