Hi Guys,

Just activated the new HR54. It went through a software update, the usual self checks but ends up back on a screen telling me to activate it. Did a red button re-boot, a refresh but still nothing. Checked my account and all the number are correct and it is listed on the equipment page. All I have done was take out the HR24 and plug in the Genie Thoughts??

If it happens again, rub the box 3 times and say "O Magic Genie please start working" It has to be that exact phrase or it will turn into a giant paperweight. :biggrin :devilish

It has to be on a specific screen to take the initial authorization.

Unlike dish where it doesn’t matter what screen the receiver is on to

What screen does it have to be on? I haven't activated a new receiver in so long I don't even remember how that works. When I call in to activate a used receiver I picked up off eBay I always put it on channel 206 and when ESPN comes in I know they've successfully activated it.

One thing I noticed recently when I activated some receivers for the first time in almost two years was that they didn't ask for the serial number like they used to. Just the model, RID and card number. Always was a pain to look on the back of the receiver for that, versus the RID & card which is shown nicely on the screen to read back to them. Still wish they'd automate the process over the web - even doing it via chat instead of phone would make it easier since they could just cut and paste the info into their screens.

THe last recvr I activated a year or so ago, I just went to my account and to Equipment and found the correct recvr and hit activate.

My account is commercial, Directv has TERRIBLE online support for commercial accounts. As in none. You can't even view your bill! I keep hoping AT&T's takeover eventually means online support for commercial accounts at least gets moved into this century...

Wow, didn't know that.
You'd think Commercial would be a priority and have thier own dept.

Usually the screen right after where it checks the SWM on a new box.

Used receivers, usually the preview channel in the low 200’s work.

They can technically activate with just the RID, as it will pull everything up on file, but some dumb CSR’s don’t know this and will require all 3

I think it does have its own department - there is a different number you can call and the CSRs I get are pretty good so I'm probably getting the cream of the crop. But the online support is zilch.

It only works to activate with just the RID if it still has the original card with it. While sometimes when I buy a used one it will come with its original card, I always swap in a different card. When I left the original card in sometimes when I called the CSR would tell me it was leased and I couldn't activate it - apparently they have to go through an extra step to convert it to owned before they can activate it on my account since they all have to be owned.

When I use a different card that happens automatically. Had a helpful CSR tell me that once after I'd called twice to activate a receiver and was told I couldn't because it was leased. Rather than arguing with them I'd learned to just call again and hope I got someone smarter, the third try I got someone smart enough to tell me what I was doing 'wrong' and since then I've never had them complain about a receiver being leased.
