My trusty 722K died this morning. Will not turn on. I also have a 622 in the bedroom. Contacted dish chat and they said they will replace the 722 but it would take several days to ship and that was the only way I could get a replacement. Problem with that is I have set up a huge Belmont (Triple Crown) party and 20 people are coming in to watch it on my projector screen in my home theater. This ruined everything. The rep said she could get me a free upgrade to Joey and Hooper and that could be installed today. I don't know a thing about those receivers. She said they would replace both the 722 and 622 and also the dish itself and all wires. The cost each month only goes up slightly so I said lets do the upgrade today or my party would be ruined.

Now, because I don't have a clue what these contraptions are like (I will study them this morning on the dish website), can any experienced user or Hooper and Joey give me tips to watch for when the install is made? Anything the technician should check before I sign the paper work? Will all my movies on my external hard drive that I have archived from the 722 still work with these new devices? Can I still archive to the external hard drive? I just don't know enough at this point and need some tips so I can make sure the technician installing this equipment covers all the bases he needs to cover.

I take it Hopper 3 is the third generation of this device? What are the problems with previous generations? I may have no choice if he brings generation one or two and that is all he has.

Also, remember on you new equipment, it has been mentioned on many threads but the first few days of your new receivers you may experience some extra downloads/reboots, slow downs, or weird quirks until all the software has been updated. After a few days, this should settle down. You will still be able to "view" programming but not all features may be available day 1.

Thanks guys, all the information is appreciated and helps a lot. I have the current 722 hooked up via hdmi to my a/v receiver and from there I out put to my computer room via hdmi going through the wall and also to my projector. I also run the 722's composite connection to the computer room. I think I can still do this with my new set up. The bedroom will only have need for one output.

My trusty 722K died this morning.
My condolences.

You do understand a 622 and a 722 each have 2 outputs. The Hopper 3 and a single Joey will only do 2 TV sets.
I assumed that was why the bill would be going up slightly, because more than one Joey would be needed. Otherwise, comparing the lowest rate for the ViP setup to the highest rate for a Hopper and single Joey, the bill should still go down slightly.

ViP: $7 DVR fee (722k) + $17 additional receiver fee (622) = $24
Hopper: $15 DVR fee + $7 Joey fee = $22

Yes, I am getting one Hopper and two Joeys to replace the 722 and 622. I have been reading about these and it does seem to provide an increase in features, plus I have heard the picture is a little brighter and better than with the old receivers. I was perfectly satisfied with the old receivers but I suppose it is time to upgrade. Now I am learning there are wireless Joeys and 4K units and all kinds of stuff. I will see what they install, play with it and then go from there. I have been with Dish for 20 years and have no reason to move so the two year contract does not bother me and I can probably upgrade again without penalty.

DISH will install what you order, if there is no 4K or Wireless Joey on the order they may not have one for your install.

I told the rep I spoke with on dish chat that I was unfamiliar with Hopper and Joey and that I would study up on them but I had to have something today for my Belmont party tomorrow. I assume she ordered just the basic for me since there was no charge. Now I am learning quite a bit about these devices but the tech guy is on his way right now and should be here within the hour. I will see what they have and if I have to have the basic so be it for right now. I can always get something else if I need to once I learn more about them. I can do without 4K and wireless but I suppose they would be better for the future tvs I might buy. Anyway, I will report back as to how the installation went.

Not necessarily. I just had an "upgrade" done (it was really a downgrade from H3 to Wally) and I didn't have to sign another contract, nor did I have to purchase the equipment.

Oh oh. Well I will have to talk to the tech guy when he comes. Problem is I really still don't know what I need. Wireless? Well, he is going to run the wires and that is always a good thing over wireless. 4K? I don't have that ability yet. So, because I really don't know all I should I may have to take a chance and hope the installer gives me what I need, at least for the time being. I thought Dish would be thrilled to upgrade people but not charge them for doing it. That is the way to save customers from going to other providers and also increasing their monthly profits. Who knows?

The wires you had for your 722 and 622 should be fine. If they're not the tech should replace them free of charge.

Depending on your credit and other un-named factors you probably qualify for a free upgrade to a Hopper 2 and a Joey. If you have super exceptional credit you might qualify for a free Hopper 3 upgrade but usually it's $50 to $100. The Hopper 3 does 4K but the Hopper 2 doesn't. If you get a Hopper 3 you should try to also get a Joey 3.

Wireless Joeys are $25 each and I believe 4K joeys are still $50 each. I'm not positive as I haven't installed a 4K Joey in the last month or two.
