Murphy's Law! Couldn't happen at a worse time. Woke up around 3AM, cold. Furnace has stopped working. Checked the thermostat, 55ºC inside -36ºC outside. Start the taps running a trickle, put on winter overalls, check the furnace, getting error codes? Time for the manual, need the magnifying glass. Got it started with another cycle test and a barbeque lighter. Ran for awhile, shut down the space heaters and taps. Back to the TV and wait.

Just got the call from the furnace guy and he'll be out shortly.

Happy Testing!!!

But it's a dry heat ;)

But anyway you look at it -40° is -40° ;) Being cold here today also, but not that cold. Speaking of cold, the coldest recorded temp in the 48 contiguous states is -70°F recorded in a mining camp about 90 miles from here. On the other side of that pass is Great Falls, MT which just saw an average temp of -1°F for the month of February. :(

oops, thermostat is in Fº

Combustion air pipe froze maybe. Had that happen on mine this winter furnace guy saw it while sitting in his truck asked for a ladder, climbed up on roof cleared the ice. No charge.

I had a gas forced-air furnace explode (buckled the side walls) due to a gas pocket many years ago. Manufactured house that was so tight, that opening the back door sometimes "sucked out" the pilot! I came home working nights once, and it sucked out the pilot when I opened the door. When I noticed, I tried to get it lit again and had some trouble. I didn't wait long enough to try a second relight, and that caused the explosion. Blew the metal chimney top hat about 135ft into the woods!

We got a new furnace installed, and this one didn't have a pilot, but used an igniter. The house we live in now has a hot water boiler furnace, and that uses an igniter also. I MUCH prefer this sort of heat over forced air.

The trouble with igniters is they are like lightbulbs. They have a certain lifespan and burnout. Since mine is easy enough to change I keep a spare one on hand.
