DirecTV loses 1.2 million customers

Nothing shocking here. This is a conscious decision by ATT to let non-profitable video subs walk.
Horsefeathers. You can't have a spokesperson saying AT&T bought DTV in order to move the customer base to their streaming service and then say it's a conscious decision to let a million subs walk when the streaming service lost an additional 195,000 subs. That does not compute.

Go to Randall Stephenson's press releases. He said or sort of implied that he wasn't going to own satellite TV forever. That he was moving their subscribers to AT&T streaming services. He also mentioned something about the T-15 or T-16 satellite would be the last one launched. It came out of the horses mouth. This is the jist of it. My recollection could be off.

In some funny way it kind of makes you think with those losses that their subscribers were or are moving on to streaming services. It could be because of AT&T's endless rate increases too. I mean - If you look at these reasons and Randall Stephenson's press releases and comments - You have to partly blame him for what is happening with these defections. Don't forget the removal of many functions from the receivers that people liked and the never ending retransmission or carraige disputes. And lastly - take a deep breath! All these blackouts. Then - They expect us to pay a RSN fee monthly for a black screen.<------ How do you like those Graham cracker's? I do understand Juan's point to some extent.

Sorry, misread the article at first. 1.2 million customer loss was DirecTV and Uverse.
DIRECTV will have to do something to bring back those customers besides gifting them free streaming services. Rip a page out of T-Mobiles playbook and entice the customer with some kind of freebie. They could lower rates. It won't happen until they start feeling the pain of those losses. I'm sure it takes a lot of cash to keep DIRECTV up and running. Why they would let this many subscribers leave is beneath me.
 
There's no way all those people are leaving for streaming. I'll bet most of them are going to their cable provider who also provides their internet. That's why they are seeing much lower losses - they are picking up some of those who are leaving Directv over their promo prices ending etc.

When you measure Directv at $100+ after their promo expires versus adding TV to their cable broadband for less than half that due to bundling savings, it is a pretty easy decision for people who don't have a particular reason (i.e. NFLST) to stay with Directv. Especially with several high profile disputes over the summer stretching into the start of football season.

If they want customers to move to streaming, they need to come out with something more compelling. AT&T Now is not even on my radar for a variety of reasons.

If you look back at my postings from nearly a year ago I mentioned all of this and that it came from Directv/ATT employees and management. But everyone gave a million excuses why it cant happen. More excuses anyone?

They may be losing tv customers but that group has had essentially no change in profits, despite the loss in subscribers.

Clearly, they are dumping customers that were costing them money instead of making money from those customers

What did they expect? All summer long they pissed off people with blackouts and didn’t want to offer subscribers any incentive to stay after coming off promotion.

I just had our best 3 months since 2015 selling Comcast, sadly at the expense of AT&T.

All summer long customers where running away from AT&T
