At&t Pay Tv unit under financial fire

Apple would at least give a good chance of writing better DVR computer code.
And make a nice user interface.

I'm not a Apple fan at all but they would at least be a company that would be interested in improving things.
And bringing newer idea's. And would value the Sat. TV customer. Many of whom probably are already Apple customers with phones or tablets, etc.

And they have the bucks to keep things going.

And give us a new cloud based DVR with unlimited tuners / recording and protect our recordings from getting deleted.
Something DTV / ATT is clueless about.

The problem isn’t directv, the problem is nobody wants AT&T’s tv service in any shape or form. I have no doubts that hbo max will be dead on arrival. Everyone will think you need to be an AT&T customer, and maybe 5% of their current wireless subscribers will check it out for a couple days, then forget it existed. And then they’ll be back to name changes and price increases, the go to strategy of this dinosaur company.

You absolutely hit the nail in the head

It’s just like Comcast having yo change their name to Xfinity and Charter/Time Warner changing their name to Spectrum.

But in Directv they did the opposite. People liked Directv, but not so much AT&T.

Where people hate AT&T it starts with crappy internet speeds and ends with high cell phone bills.

AT&T AKA Death Star, created their own issue.

Any suggestions?
15 years ago I would say. Verizon but looks like they dont care about landline any more (tears)

I wish telcos would expand FTTH again ...

And for those saying dish/Charlie I assume they are focusing on wireless now as they are/will be 4th largest wireless carrier now...

While it is only in certain cities, there are many smaller areas building municipal fiber networks.
Also, many Electric Co-ops and Telephone Co-ops are building FTTH/FTTB networks.
Numerous RECs are building fiber networks in Alabama, Missouri, Mississippi, and Tennessee that I know of personally, a business acquaintance of mine works for a company that subcontracts (builds and manages) FTTx networks for rural co-ops and they have more business than they can handle in the Southeast.
I am on a coop in a very rural part of NW Alabama. About 75% of this county of 30,000 residents is covered with up to 10GB fiber. I have 1Gbps/1Gbps service with the local REC, and it is world class. Great price performance and customer service.
Much rather have a local provider with folks I know than an AT&T or Verizon.

I agree, but sometimes you have to deal with the devil (AT&T) to get what you want.

I’m surprised I can get fiber at my house

To quote Chevy Chase in a line from Christmas Vacation, when I found out Gigabit fiber was coming here, “I couldn’t have been more surprised if I woke up with my head sewn to the carpet.” I live ‘out in the county,’ an unincorporated area. There are 8 homes on a two mile long road, way out in ‘the woods.’ I was beyond ecstatic when I found out they were coming with this. All I could get before was 4.0 Mpbs / 256 Kbps DSL and had Exede for backup. Going to 1Gbps from that and for only $79 per month, no data caps, Amazing!

Rural electric cooperatives have a very different ROI measurement - they can do projects that won't reach payback for 30 years and it is no problem. Heck, they could probably do a project that they couldn't show would EVER reach payback if a large enough percentage of their member/owners vote for it. If I had such a utility I'd vote for them to run fiber even if it would permanently add a few bucks to my electric bill to pay the overhead.

Apple to start with....Amazon maybe,....How about Netflix....All have deep pockets and a few have huge amounts of cash in hand!....If I tried Im sure I could come up with more.
These are content delivery companies not providers. If anything they would buy the Time Warner assets once AT&T has their fire sale.

The other thing, just because they have lots of cash ( Apple mostly of the 3 he named) it has to make business sense for them to buy DirecTV, but it is a slowly dying business model so shareholders would never go for it.

Apple has never made an acquisition larger than $3 billion (Beats) and IMHO should be taken off any list of potential buyers for things like this (or Netflix or Tesla or ...) because it is a fantasy that they will do a 180 on their corporate culture and make such a huge acquisition.

A small minority of acquisitions larger than $10 billion executed by public companies are successful in the long run. Wall Street likes to push them because of the huge M&A fees they collect.

If Apple were to buy DTV they price would be nowhere near what AT&T paid for them. Either way AT&T will take a hit if they ever go to sell.

Maybe they will put DTV up for auction.
Apple might get it for 150k and toss in a few old ipods. lol

Nobody is going to pay what the fools at AT&T paid.

We didn’t see this coming 5 years ago. The streaming crap didn’t really start to get bad till 2 years ago

What is wrong with streaming?

You should be angry at Traditional Providers for basically pricing themselves so high it allowed the market to open up for these streaming companies and I do not just mean the live TV services.

If you are mad about streaming maybe you should be mad at those getting free TV via a antenna.

Also, I just read about the Comcast price increase, Broadcast TV Fee is going up to $14.95 a month, Regional Sports Fee is $8.25 a month and that is on top of the increase to packages, talk about wanting to push away your customers to those streaming services.
