American TV giant and satellite broadcast provider, Dish Network has mysteriously gone offline with its websites and apps ceasing to function over the past 24 hours.
The widespread outage affects Dish.com, Dish Anywhere app as well as several websites and networks owned by the corporation. Customers also suggest the company's call center phone numbers are unreachable.
Additionally, customers are facing authentication issues when signing into TV channel apps such as MTV & Starz via their Dish credentials.
Dish Network's remote employees have been cut off from accessing their work systems.

Dish Network websites and apps including Dish.com, DishWireless.com, and Dish Anywhere are facing a prolonged outage with customers unable to get to their accounts or stream TV online:

BleepingComputer also observed the Dish Anywhere Android app experiencing connection issues:

Customers have also reported experiencing problems when attempting to pay their bills or calling customer service centers.
'Dish Answers,' the company's Twitter support account states that "an internal systems issue is impacting some of our customer service operations," and that the network is working hard to restore access.

A report published by The Verge also shows an internal email sent to Dish Network's employees, with management notifying them of an ongoing "VPN issue."

Two sources told the media outlet that they were being asked to "stand by" for information from management but have been left in the dark.
"They say it hasn't even been made clear whether they'll be paid," states the report. "Employees have also been told that they won't be able to connect to their VPN, keeping remote workers from logging in to work."

As for whether this is a cyber attack or not, multiple signs are indicative of one but there is only speculation and conflicting information around.
A source in touch with a Dish Network employee told BleepingComputer that the network "has been hit" (by a cyber attack) with employees seeing "blank icons" on their Desktop—something that typically occurs after a ransomware infection encrypts the victim's files.

But, "a person familiar with the issue" told The Desk that the network's issues are not stemming from a cyber attack, but did not offer additional detail.
BleepingComputer emailed Dish Network's press team in advance of publishing but it is not clear if they have access to their emails during this incident. Prior to that, we attempted to reach Dish via telephone but did not get an answer.
An automated response sent to us from the 'Dish Answers' Twitter account reiterated the "internal system issue" the company was facing.
BleepingComputer is continuing to investigate the matter and will provide you with updates as more information becomes available.

Dish facebook is down too...
How could an "internal" problem at Dish shut down a Facebook page? If this is true (I don't do Facebook so I'm not going to check it out) then this problem at Dish, now going on three days, seems much more serious than the optimists are projecting. Don't get me wrong -- I hope the optimists are correct and Dish will be back soon.

They have reps responding to some post with the same basic info..."We apologize for any disruptions you may be having. We are experiencing an internal system issue and our teams are working hard to restore systems as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience." - Shay P.

Charle probably clicked on the link in the email from “Scott“ inviting him to play a little on-line poker Wednesday night, and, well, bye-bye Dish.

This fictional (?) account brought to you by your IT Security team who want you to stop using the computers on your desk, period. The most secure PC is an unplugged PC…

Huh, just read the article again and would you look at that, I guess its confirmed now.

Just had another (verified) Dish Network employee reach out to me confirming on background that the company has indeed been "cyber attacked." The employee received a written note from their manager stating, "it was caused by an outside bad actor, a known threat."
JUST IN: As per the note, Dish has advised employees to not use their computer if at any point it was "in the building" today. External vendor is working to resolve the issue. The company still doesn't know how the threat actors gained access, or the full extent of the outage.

Not only that, names/addresses/SSNs of customers/employees could be at risk in the worst case scenario. Usually the objective of ransomware is sabotage and data destruction, but who knows how long the bad actor had access to the system's beforehand.

I was a victim of the Equifax breach a few yrs ago..They tried to open seven different credit card accounts..took me 2 days of calling and then having to fill out paperwork just to get the hard inquiries removed from my credit reports

It has been 14 years since I opened my account with Dish and can't remember, but do they require a SSN when you activate their service? When I signed up, I had what I think was called a flex account and have never had a contract I was tied into - and I can't recall if they required SSN.
