MPEG2 Western Arc shutoff

I wonder why Dish left some duplicate SD channels such as 107 Comedy, 117 Pop, 124 BET, 125 FXX, 136 FX, 137 QVC, 140 ESPN, 141 ESPNU, 142 ESNWS, 143 ESPN2, 149 FOXS2, 150 FOXS1, 157 NHLN, 158 CBSN, 160 MTV, 162 VH1, 166 CMT, 170 Nick, 172 Disney, 180 FRFM, 190 NATGW, 197 NTGEO, 205 Fox News, 206 FOXB, 231 RFDTV, 232 COWBY, 241 PARAM, 340 ENCOR, 341 ENCRW, 342 EWSTN, 344 ESUSO, 349 Studio, 356 SK&FM, 367 SMITH, 380 MGM+, etc.

It may be clearing out SD channels by transponder rather than channel numbers. But the list of disappearing SD channels will likely continue to quickly evolve. For example, I just noticed that the SD version of ID, 192, is now gone but it wasn’t in zippyfrog’s list.

Oh, and for those that have been watching my thread here, the keeping of 625 as a shutoff gage has now served it’s purpose and it’s now time to send it to the boneyard. Thanks for all the fish.
So there is no longer MPEG2 channels at all? Not even the info channels?

Don’t know the current remaining MPEG2 count, but eventually all MPEG2 channels will disappear. However, some SD channels will remain and may never be up converted to HD. They will just be broadcast in MPEG4 instead.

The SD version of 192 was removed last week so that is why it wasn't in that list. The list was just the ones that were removed yesterday.

Years ago - I think it was 2010 - there was a lawsuit about Dish carrying HD versions of DisneyXD, ABC Family (now Freeform), Disney Channel and ESPNews because Dish only had rights to carry the SD version. From what I remember, in that lawsuit, it came out that Disney charged providers separately - once for the HD and once for the SD version. I don't know what the latest Disney contract calls for, but there could be some contractual obligations to carry both versions for some of these networks.

Funny thing a out that is that the sd version of Disney are am actual HD program that just got a 4:3 crop. You can tell because a lot of the image is just missing. They didn't even downscale, it's legit a 16:9 image with a 4:3 crop. I've complained about it in our actual dish network forums but nobody up the ladder cares.

Sorry if this should be its own thread. This issue came up as a result of trying to work around the changes with my current equipment...My current setup has been
  • (RECEIVER1) VIP222k in main room (TV1) plus office/bedroom (TV2).
  • (RECEIVER2) owned 311 receiver in MBR.
I had originally thought RECEIVER2/MBR would only lose SAT locals, which we don't have on our account anyways. So, I hadn't done anything about it. Now, I obviously know that it will eventually be everything on that receiver.

It does look like I could continue with VIP222k without channel loss, correct?

If I can continue to use VIP222k, we rarely use TV2. So, I've switched the output coax in the attic so that TV2 goes to the MBR. Take the SAT coax in MBR, plug it directly to the TV input, and I have clear SAT TV2 channels.

Here's where the problem comes in...locals are OTA. On old setup, antenna goes into the 311 and passes through to watch SAT or OTA. There is no box for this with TV2...I do have an OTA antenna. It has an input and a A/B switch built-in. I plugged the SAT coax into the antenna and run the antenna directly to the TV. OTA channels still work fine. SAT signal is very fuzzy when using the default channel 60 that was setup for TV2. This is with the antenna powered off and the A/B switch in the correct position.

Is there a better coax A/B switch solution? And are all of them manual, as I'm having trouble finding a switch that could be remote controlled. TIA!

Yeah after the Disney dispute the Disney channels that were once HD, returned as SD on Dish and have been that way ever since.

I'm confused about the equipment replacement process needed for the western arc MPEG2 shutoff. A DISH tech pulled in my drive one Sunday afternoon and said he was going to replace my equipment (a VIP222 and two 311's) at no cost to me and that there would be no changes to my bill. He also told me the new boxes would be mine and not leased. I talked with a CSR yesterday and was told there would be an upgrade fee for the 311's and a small change to my bill because the new receivers would be leased.
Also, I received an email a couple of weeks ago at 8:52 PM that informed me a tech would be at my house the next morning to replace my equipment. The message mentioned that I would have to sign an agreement and included a link to the agreement that resulted in a "404 not found". A call to the number in the email got me a CSR who had no idea what I was talking about.
Can anyone tell me, or provide a link to a document, that spells out exactly what the facts are?
Any idea what's in the agreement I'll have to sign?
Is the replacement really at no cost?
Will my bill really stay the same?

Ugh, there should be NO fee to upgrade.
There may be a change in your bill since only you and Dish know what types of discounts you may have,
If you have 4 TV's, a Hopper without Discounts would cost $15.00 for the Hopper and $21 for the 3 Joeys you'd need. (or $14.00 for Joeys if it's 2 TV's) plus $15.00 for DVR Fee - which is just dumb to even have that charge anymore.
You may be paying up to $10.00 for each receiver you have now, sans any discounts.

The Agreement is a standard 2 year contract - which will price lock you for the duration and a call to Loyalty to set this up could result in a lower bill overall than you pay now

Thanks for the reply. We're currently paying $5.00 each for the 311's, and that's the only add-ons. I called back today and talked to another CSR. She explained things in more detail than the previous one. The additional receiver charges would increase to $7.00 each, and there would be a DVR fee of $15.00, but there was a "courtesy credit" of $19.00 that cancels that out. There was a slight increase in taxes that results in the new total bill being just a little higher. So, it's not true that there's no increase in the monthly cost, but it's close.
There is a two year contract. I don't like that.
Thanks for the Loyalty tip. I'll be calling them.

You know, my thing on the 2 yr contract, if you know you're not leaving, what's the difference? If you think you may be leaving in the 2 yrs, I'd be hesitant, also

That's always stumped me. That people don't want a two year commitment but have no plans on changing anything. But yet do it with their smart phones without hesitation.
A few customers have explained it as:
"I've been with you for 20+ years. Asking me to sign for another 2 years is like y'all don't trust me or something..."

And I kinda get that. But it CAN be waived, so...

Sure it can be waived, but the two year commitment is to make sure they get paid for the equipment they are giving you for free. You can always purchase your equipment as well if it's that big of a deal.

Oh, I totally get that. But when I have a customer who has been with us for 20+ years, and has never missed one payment....it just feels a little silly. For new people, or those who are chronically late...yep, yer getting that 2 year contract!
