At least for those of us who's team is local, we will still get the majority of the games with our RSN and local channels.

This sucks. I don't think there should ever be an exclusive package for just one provider. They should be open to all.

Where does it say this is an exclusive deal, E* and InDemand can carry the package if they match D*'s deal.

Nice taking out of context there. I was simply saying my general comment on hd games was valid considering it was mentioned in the press release. I never said more games were ever promised for this season in any press release.

Whatever, you are the BACKTRACKING KING OF TROLL. And to quote another member's post last night about YOU:

Uh, I never said anyone promised more hd games this season. Nevertheless, I am disapointed that the package this year will seemingly not offer anything new besides the 24hr baseball channel.

The 24x7 MLB channel does not launch until 2009.

As for the "matching", it does not say that InDemand and Dish need to "match DirecTV's deal". It says D* is the distributor, if Dish or InDemand want to carry EI, each must negotiate a deal with D*. It may be more than they paid last year, or it may be the same, and what the end consumer pays is up to Dish/InDemand. But the package is not being withheld.

The only really likely part is that Cheapass Charlie won't like the price and will probably tell the press (again) exactly how truly evil D* and MLB are. And maybe John Kerry will get his name in the paper again and do nothing again.

Everyone is crying about D* taking the initiative, give me a break!!! Cable and Dish still have the chance to jump in, but if you do not want up front the money that is there problem. D* is trying to offer the best service and quality of programming they can for there customers and you can not fault them for that.

Links not working for me. In link http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.zhtml?c=127160&p=irol-newsArticle&ID=972143&highlight= I don't see where is sayd that D*'s the distributor and need to negotiate with D*.

THIS PRESS RELEASE YOU MENTION. THE ONE THAT YOU REFER TO. THE ONE THAT WAS PROMISING MORE HD. THE ONE WITH THE VAGUE PROMISES YOU REFER TO
At that time I did not see the press release I was on the call.

This thread was about the conference call not the press release.

This offer to Dish Network and to the cable companies is just a bunch of nonsense. Everyone knows that Dish Network and IN Demand on behalf of the cable companies will never be able to cut a deal with their chief competitor, DirecTV. Definitely not in a month, either. This is just covering themselves so they can go to the FCC, and say it is not an exclusive deal and get them off their backs.

Any reasaonable person knows that MLB Extra Innings will only be available on DirecTV going forward, and that is it. You can bet your house on it.

Scott - that reference was not for you, it was for the troll named Questioner - he mentioned a fictitious press release and claimed it promised Hd or whatever. Truth is, he has (as you probably know) already been banned by Earl and Chris at dbstalk and avsforums for doing this same sort of stuff there.

Yeah, I know I should ignore him, but he trolls the boards and disrupts the threads with his rants.

The press release does not say that DirecTV is now the distributor and Dish & Cable have to negotiate with D*. It sounds like its still a deal with MLB. The statement is:
MLB and DIRECTV have agreed to include a provision that allows MLB EXTRA INNINGS to be offered to other incumbents - In Demand and DISH Network - at consistent rates and carriage requirements with a deal to be concluded before the baseball season begins. The provision also requires the incumbents to agree to carriage rights to the MLB Channel proportionally equivalent to DIRECTV's commitment. Should the incumbents decide not to match DIRECTV's commitment, the MLB EXTRA INNINGS package will be exclusive to DIRECTV.

I thought that the call was pretty clear that the deal is open to other providers tbut that they must match whatever DTV is paying. Ia m not sure if that applies to the term or to carriage of the MLB channel but I gather that it does.

DIRECTV's commitment to carry the Channel as a basic service to more than 15 million homes was a major factor in the long-term agreement between the provider and MLB. <--- does this mean that Cable and Dish have to guarantee 15 million eyes also?

No but asa basic channel---and that isa likely sticking point to some providers.

And for the opposing view...

First some background; When I was first making the decision to pick Dish or the other guys. It was simple. Sports = other guy Movies = Dish. I would not mind seeing a return to those days. Much like Mac = Artsy PC = Real work.

Just think of all the available BW we'd have if they didn't carry stuff I don't watch. What?? You mean you watch it? HHmmmm well I'm not sure what to do then. Maybe we could have different providers for different viewers.

I mean, no personal offense to you but........who are you to judge what a multi-billion dollar company does or doesn't do? I know they have over $350 million in annual revenue from the NFL package alone (and the monthly revenue from all the subs that have DirecTV because they want the ability to get the NFL package.

If their marketing people believe that its a good deal for them, so be it. If they feel its going to get them subs from other providers, so be it. And if they fall flat on their face - so be it.

I mean - look at your signature, its obvious you have more than a little bias towards DISH.

and who are you to question my questions... How can you point to someone's fault if you have not at looked at yourself in the mirror first... :D You have to be kidding here.... calling a Dish fan when you are a D* fan boy...

Oh - I admit to being a D* fan, but I don't judge E* motives in how they make their business decisions. That was the point I was making, and I still stick to it. This is an open forum, I didn't say anything wrong. And I didn't say you had a fault - but you are certainly touchy.

I'll try to stay away from your 'fun'.

And you didn't??? I think you need to be banned as well for your total lack of courtesy and respect for others; even if they are trolls. You could have ignored him after you made your first point.

I'm sorry Scott, I couldn't contain myself.

I'm sorry Scott, I couldn't contain myself.

Sorry if it bothered you, I thought I was only asking him to post factual info, or supply a link to what he brought in to the conversation. I don't think its right for someone to come in and post B.S.

My apologies. Hope you accept.

BREAKING NEWS: DIRECTV/MLB Announcement Today
DIRECTV and Major League Baseball plan on making a "major joint announcement" today at 4:15 p.m. ET. Although not specified, it is widely believed that the two groups will confirm their much-hyped agreement giving DIRECTV exclusive carriage rights to the league's out-of-market programming package, MLB Extra Innings.

For the past few weeks, rumors of the deal have drawn ire from fellow pay-TV companies, regulators and consumers alike fearing decreased access to such popular sports programming. Last week, DIRECTV CEO Chase Carey wrote a seven-page letter to regulators looking into the proposed deal saying the agreement would actually be better for consumers in the long run.

Among those scheduled to make the announcement are MLB Commissioner Bud Selig, MLB President Bob DuPuy, MLB EVP for business Tim Brosnan and DIRECTV's Carey.

Make sure to check tomorrow's edition of SkyREPORT for complete story details.

Not at all being touchy.... you asked the question.... this is your question

I mean, no personal offense to you but........who are you to judge what a multi-billion dollar company does or doesn't do?

which first question me as to who am I to question whether D* can invest on this or that. If you read my quote before, you will see that I did not say anything wrong. I said that at price of $700million the other companies should not pay it and let DirecTv roll with the 700 million expense. Something wrong with that. Isn't that what D* is proposing if neither Cable or Dish pick up the MLB EI package. Did I judge or did I just re-stated an opinion that D* already had in place. Your "who I to judge?" sounds to me that you were the one that came very strong and I whenever you have that attitude in a forum people are not going to be very pleased. I hardly had a confrontation with you in the past so that quite rubbed the wrong way.

and then was the next quote,

I mean - look at your signature, its obvious you have more than a little bias towards DISH.

again judging me by my signature. If you look carefully, you may see that I am not quite the fan E* boy. As opposed to others, I have no interest in neither satellite company. Neither pay my bill. My interest is only me. If you do not see beyond that, I do not know how to put it.

and lastly I am not very touchy about it. I just want to make clear that my opinions although contrary to what others like should have equal opportunity to be heard as any other (including yours).

Scott ,check this out..Pay attention to the wording of the release..
This from the "Evening Bridge"

Evening BRIDGE Extra
At this moment, DIRECTV and Major League Baseball are detailing their much-talked-about partnership for the league's Extra Innings package. The seven-year contract isn't necessarily an exclusive, but competitors would need to agree to the same carriage structure contained in the DIRECTV deal. Also, 2009 launch of a MLB channel is part of the agreement. Details in SkyREPORT Friday: (http://www.skyreport.com).
