Join the SatelliteGuys Folding@Home Team!

Hey, we're projected to pass the DirecTV team (3,281st place) sometime around 8:00pm EDT today! Heh-heh-heh...

Calling SMP experts !
So i thought i'd try the SMP Windows client instead of 2 regular console clients, but i keep getting a File_IO_error.
The folding forum suggests overclocking can cause this, I have overcleocked, so for the moment im back using the regular client.

Anybody else running an overclocked system with the SMP client ?
BTW one other note for anybody else looking to use the windows SMP client, it requires you to have a windows user with admin rights and also must have a password.

All right, I'm turning my PS3 back on, let's speed this up a bit!
Tawhite, how many WUs/day does the PS3 go through? It looks like you can crank out 574-861 pts/day, much better than the PC clients.

I had thought about getting a PS3 for the BluRay movie capability, but now I see that Formula 1 is out for the PS3 which is one more reason to think about it. Although I'm sure my son would have conniptions if I got a Playstation 3 and wouldn't let him play on it because it was folding proteins all day!

Checking the stats, I see "old" Foxbat finally got passed by jgantert this morning. SatelliteGuys.US should easily pass the 100,000 point mark sometime today (~3:00pm EDT), but more importantly, we will break into the top 3000 teams!

Ok... I have been trying to figure out why my client talks of "Frames" and not "steps." So I went to the download site, and saw that I downloaded the first one listed. The graphical WinXp client.

I don't have multiple processors, so no need for SMP, and I don't have an ATI card, so no GPU client.

Didn't figure out why it talks about "frames."

But here is what I see

folding-1.png

Now here is the interesting thing. On the P4, which completed 1 WU, it had 5,000 frames. On the one above (on the A64) it has 50,000 frames. Even though it is operating 10x as fast (5sec/frame instead of 40sec/frame) its got 10x more frames to crunch.

I am really curious how many points I will get for this one.

373 points. Here's the page that explains all: http://fah-web.stanford.edu/psummary.html Look for the Project Number in the first column (the p2126 of your "Working on:") and look across to the sixth column to get the maximum points credited to your account.

Column eight identifies the client core, so you can identify which projects are available for the various platforms. For example, the PS3 core will generate 250-412 points per WU (it seems 287 pts is the most popular result for our members with Playstation 3s). The SMP is the big kahuna, with up to 1,760 points per WU available (and four days to complete it.)

Makes you want to go out and buy a Clovertown, doesn't it? ;)

One of the reasons that I haven't devoted my son's PC to the cause is that it's only a 2.8 GHz P4 and I've seen it requires over 24 hours of up time to complete a WU. My wife's 1.3 GHz Celeron would probably take a week and has a fan that could levitate the minitower if set on its back, so we want to shut it off when we're not using it.

BTW, who is Douglas Morris? He is smokin', cranking out over 3,000 points in the last 24 hours! Is that you, LER?

2800 of 59714 Wow we are trucking along! :D
The FAHStats site (actually KakaoStats) predicts that we will break the 2,000 mark in less than a week. We are burning up the charts!

I came home after work expecting to find that I had completed another WU, but what I didn't expect to find was that my Mac had been issued a bum WU and had burned ten hours of folding as it attempted to process this unit, only to die after reaching 9% completion. After the third attempt (at a little over three hours each time), FAH finally decided to download a new copy of the SMP core and was finally successfully folding again.

Unfortunately, no credits for the time lost :( which is one of the risks of running the beta, and why we get so many points when it does work okay. I worked out that with the two SMP core clients active, the Mac generates approximately 86 points per hour. So, that little hiccup cost me and our Team almost 900 points.:(:(:(

My A64 is still finishing its first WU, been running non-stop for 29 hours, but it has slowed down from 5sec/frame to 9sec/frame. Not sure why, but once it finishes, I will give it a rest...

I should actually have 2 WUs in the next 24 hours; the crappy P4 is almost done with its second.

I still don't understand why its' WU was 5000 frames, and the A64s was 50,000.

It looks like most of the Project WUs are broken into 100 "frames" (according to the FAH Project Summary) so I use that measure when looking at my machine taking 12 minutes (20 now that I "doubled-down") to process a "frame".

Your stats of 9 sec/frame yields over five days  for those 50,000 frames. Time to give your PC to your wife (or kid) and get a new quad-core AMD or Core 4 Duo for folding. ;)

Your Team needs you! Do it for the Team!:D

That sucks you lost points but you are burning up. Make me want to upgrade fast! :up

I hear ya my son's puter wu is 5000 my second is at 20,000,000. ? I don't understand why?

So why does this one list it as 50,000 frames? It has been about 5 days on the darn thing. Seriously

I doubt my wife would let me get a new PC right now. But I can ask :D

May want to check all your computers if you have automatic Windows updates turned on. There were some updates yesterday and the machines rebooted. That is if you're running Windows.

How does one check the status or how many points you get for a WU with the SMP version? I installed it on Monday night I believed and can't check the status since it's running as a service.

Randall, there should be a UnitInto.txt file somewhere in your FAH directory that contains the progress statistics. There might also be an HTML file as well with useful links.
