Correct - IF YOU want a free phone. NOT IF THEY CALL YOU and say - excuse me, but YOU HAVE TO upgrade your perfectly fine phone - AND sign a 18 month committment even though you are a great customer for many years.
Umm not the case.
I had a phone I loved, it was the Motorola Flip Phone, when my contract came up for renewal they would not let me keep that phone as it was analog only, they forced me to buy a new phone as they were moving to digital technology.
I miss that phone.

But you dont HAVE to upgrade, just if you WANT to keep Voom.
This is the same crap the Comcast subs are whining about while Comcast is switching analog channels to digital to make room. People want to sit in their little bubble while they are left behind by technology.
This is nothing new, mpeg4 did not happen yesterday.
Here's my selfish view(and its not selfish to me because Ive been looking ahead):
If you bought a tv(for primary use) in the last 2 years and it wasnt an digital tv, uh, not so smart(Ive bought 2).
If you got a box from E* in the last year and it wasnt mpeg4 capable, uh, not so smart.(Ive bought a HR20 and 622 in the last year)
If I was sitting there with a 921 or whatever the heck it is Id be saying:
"hmmmm, free 622 upgrade for 18 mo's commitment and Im getting more hd with Voom going mpeg4. Sign me up!"
No, we get the guys that say "I bought a 921 2 years ago and have no contract, now they want to go do something stupid like upgrade the hd programming and it means Ill have to sign up for 18 more mo's or loose the channels.BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
Sounds like when Cingular bought ATT and went to GSM and would not replace analog phones. I know because I was a customer.
The problem that I have with this is that if I did not have a commitment and was waiting to see what happens at the end of the year with D*, E* and cable. Now I have to give up my channels or spend around $300 - $500 to keep my HD channels for a few months or commit to E* and then have to terminate their contract with fee to change providers .
You could look at this as either good or bad timing by E*.
Im sure the contract is on purpose, but its all a roll of the dice.
I still had 12 mo's left on my D* contract when they screwed me in March. I paid the fee.
If I was you and did not have a commitment and were that worried about it. Id cancel, go to Comcast for a few mo's then see what happens unless you rComcast sucks.
D* really aint bad, and the HR20 is good so you wouldnt go wrong there. I cancelled because the CSR's screwed me and I made a statement with my wallet.

I am personally not worried because I have a 622 and 211. I will not need to commit to anything. It was just a point of view.
Opinion only (and frankly I think its a good move by E*) - the timing has to be so that as many current HD subs make a committment to them NOW (before the September timeframe) for obvious reasons. Hey - both companies (and the cablecos) are fighting hard for this market - as they should.
But since the light up date on this VOOM conversion isn't until August, at least you will have a beter idea - we will know better the status of DIRECTV 10, and I think you will see MANY more providers announce their launch plans by then. You can always change your equpment at the last possible moment can't you?
I guess Im different than most. I just want the best programming. If Comcast was the king a year from now and had a decent dvr, I might pay the E* cancellation fee and move to Comcast.

I think you are right and we'll prob see an even more agressive approach to keeping customers the 2nd half of this year. I just hope E* and D* dont get crazy and start going to 24 mo contracts. Itll be damn expensive then to buy em out

They want to lock in as many as their subs as possible as well as being able to deliver more HD content.

Okay, I own an 811 and subscribe to the HD Pack and Voom only ($14.99 a month). What is the impact on me? What's my new minimum package to get Voom?

I thought D* already had 24 month contracts.
Hey - I prefer D*, you prefer E*, someone else prefers cable. But don't ever think any of them care about US first - no matter what they say. All of the moves, all of the ads, all of the hype is for THEM first and FOREMOST!
The bottom line is it is a BUSINESS.
Hey even I preferred D* at one time. I just switched to E* for their NON-VOOM HD offerings..
You have to move up to the HD pack @ $20 per month plus various fees and lease or buy a ViP211 (lease upgrade is free to Phase I).
ALL of Voom will be MPEG4 your 811 can't see it anymore after August 15.
