Also with Dish you will get better receivers as well.

:rolleyes:ANY D* HD STB can beat the pants off the E* 811, I know the 811 is what drove me away from E* back to D*. Does the 501/508/510 have NBR recording yet, which all the D* DVR's have? A bad day with the D* HR20 is better then a good day with the 921 (which used to have an automatic reboot every night to help keep it from crashing). Has E* STB's gotten better lately, yep, but how long did it take them to get there?

I the new satellite does not launch or fails. what will directv do?????

Probably do a find and replace on all their press releases to change fall 2007 to fall 2008 and give their exec's a bonus for doing a good job. They'd also be sending me the packing material for sending back two HR20's since I'd be cancelling service and going to cable until things shake out.

I had Dish Network for a year and also had the 811. I couldn't stand that unit. It was lease and I sent it back after 3 months. I had the 942 HD DVR and actually liked it. Now that I have the HR20 and they are working very well, there is no going to Dish Network for me. I like my current configuration and channel choices. I lean more towards sports and Directv is definately the best offering for sport choices.

I expect DirecTV and Dish to be really even by the end of the year.

Most of DirecTV's new HD channels will just be SD Upconverts as many of the channels are not on the air yet.

The ones which are true HD I expect Dish to carry them. Dish has room for them and this is one of the reasons why they are converting the VOOM channels to MPEG4 on August.

I am hearing some buss (aka a RUMOR) that the rest of the MPEG2 HD channels could be MPEG4 by the end of the year, opening up more space for Dish.

So you're saying that E* will do the more then 5 or 6 new HD channels in 2007 then what's been reported in the past?

Also, you say most of the new HD D* channels will be SD upconverts, what are you basing this on? Are you saying all those channels, like HBO, Starz, Discovery, History, TBS, etc will not have any HD but just SD upconverts?

I agree with you,

I think it is so funny how so many people believe the DISH receivers are better than DIRECTV's. It is all in the eye of the beholder. For me, the DIRECTV receiver is far superior to DISH, for one reason; neither DISH nor DIRECTV offer OTA locals of any kind where I live. The DIRECTV HR20 allows me to get OTA HD locals with guide data, the newest DISH HD DVR would allow me to get HD OTA locals without a guide (because I cannot subscribe to locals, which is required for this to work with DISH). That is a deal breaker for me and DISH.

Also, I may be mistaken but doesn't the newest DISH HD DVR only record one OTA channel at a time? My DIRECTV HR20 can record 2 OTA channels at once. So for me, since I cannot get locals at all via satellite, the DIRECTV receivers are far superior to DISH. I almost switched to DISH recently before I learned about these flaws with DISH receivers which would be completely unacceptable to me.

All hd to go full mpeg 4 is what I heard last year . They talked about a 3 year transition for all customers to go full mpeg 4 starting this summer for hd and two years later for all sd customers to be converted. THis is a major expenditure by DISH to upgrade all 13.5 million customers to new mpeg 4 receivers. The upside is no more older receivers, unless they plan on having two sat services . ONe for sd at the 110/119 slots and the hd customers will use mpeg 4 sats at 86.5 and 97. That might be the way they save money in the long run. Not having to upgrade all the mpeg 2 receivers all at once and keeping two sat services up and running for sd and hd would do that.

They claim to have room on the new sats for the mpeg 4 service for 200 hd channels . I wonder how long it will take them to get the new sats up and running? I hope that they will follow the origional course they took and relaunch it by March like they did the origional DISH in 96.

I just hope that DISH will keep up with Directv and cable and get all their premium channels into hd like Hbo/Cinemax/STarz and Showtime- Tmc would be nice too. I really want SCi -Fi channel in hd but I will wait till next year when DISH gets it all together. I have to much $$$ invested in DISH over 3 accounts and I really don't have more $$$$ to start back over with Directv and the 2 year commitment is a deal breaker for me. THat is to long to be committed to a provider when all the changes are still happening in HD.

Dish hd dvr receivers can record 3 things at a time -1 ota & 2 sat channels. Does your Directv hd dvr do that?

Does your Dish Network DVR record or view 2 simultaneous OTA digital (most HD) channels? :p

I'm sure there are times that HR20 folks wish it could record 3 things at a time.

I'm fairly sure that 622 owners wish their DVR had two OTA tuners in it, especially when E* doesn't have HD LIL's.

It's what always happens with threads like this. Someone asks something about D* HD plans, a E* or cable member put in a post about D* won't make it, E* will match or have more then D*, E* has better DVR's and the D* folks respond. Never fails, always happen.

I know these things are crazy. I normally don't post but I thought mine was a bit of tongue and cheek and not to be taken too seriously.

Seeing since over 70% of what I watch is OTA stuff, I am happier with being able to record two OTA channels at once and get my local OTA guide data. Therefore, IMHO, DIRECTV receivers are far superior. :up

I agree!

Well I have both ota hd with my antenna and my hd locals from Dish so I get to record up to 3 network shows on say ABC/Cbs/Nbc or Fox . So I can have my cake and eat it too, so in MY case Dish is superior.

IIRC, you're only getting all four networks in HD via Dish because you're cheating and moved your service address, else you'd have nothing but the SD channels.

Okay, my daddy can beat your daddy. Someone here with DirectTV and the HR20 step up. On the Dish622 you can record 3 HD shows at one time (1 OTA and 2 D) and watch a fourth HD show previously recorded. If you do not pay for locals you do not have a guide? My guide works and tells me what is playing on supplemental channels (.2, .3, ect.). Recording is very easy and I like the ability to use PIP with what is recorded/recording so I can flip if I want to. Also, that 30 second skip for commercials is a killer. So where is the problem?

Can someone with DirectTV explain the HR20's abilities without the daddy vs daddy lingo? I would like to have a fair and complete comparison.
