Updated 622 External Storage Information

It will be L4.40

However I just got some BAD NEWS about this release which I will post when I get in front of a PC. I just received this information a few moments ago.

hall, is your influence ? :) or your prediction ? :)

I don't think he's happy about it; but I do wonder what came up that was such a showstopper at this hour.

If it's not the software; then I don't think we'll ever see external storage because they can't negotiate the rights cleanly. Then it's time for me to send off a 211 for mods by Nextcom wireless.

Cheers,

Ok here is the bad news...

This is DIRECTLY from the Dish Network PR person. So I am not mincing words here is the email as I got it.

Scott- thanks for posting the information regarding HDD downloads and not calling to activate until 8/15. We really appreciate it!

When we talked about content transfer between receivers using the HDD a few weeks ago, my information was wrong. I initially thought subscribers could transfer between receivers registered under the same account. Disregard this info. Upon initial software release the hard drive is intended for use with one receiver; if subscribers try to attach the HDD to a second receiver, they may risk loss of content. This may change in future software updates. Sorry for confusing the info and your readers. If you have more questions please let me know. Thanks.

Oh, that software version number you wanted is L440.

grr. That's one of the things I was hoping for (being able to shuttle stuff between 622's).

Oh Well. I guess their having issues getting the crypto to do the right stuff, and want to at least get us SOMETHING.

Let's see if we actually get the external storage.

Scott,
Can you verify that it's still ONE $39.95 activation fee per HOUSEHOLD?

Thanks!

And not per receiver?

Remember people, this is a key part:

"Upon initial software release the hard drive is intended for use with one receiver"

They haven't shut the door on the possibility that sharing will be possible in the future.

Past experience.... Mind you, I don't want them to announce something and then fall through, but I think they'd be better off just sneaking features in once they work ! Can you imagine how some would react if they delayed it ?? I can 'cause we've seen it enough times.

Actually, the jumps telling me about last moment decisions style from top level.
Free or fee ? DVR married or to an account ? Make it or not ? "Oh, we can't ditch it - other competitors have it already", blah, blah, blah.

Oh that famous DBSTalk ! :(
After I posted short phrase with a link to Scott's post here, they're banned me. he he

They're shoving a lot into this one upgrade (Ethernet phone home + External HD support). I'd rather they leave the transfer between receivers option on the table for the time being. Let's get past the larger dilemma (capacity constraints) first.

My wife will be ecstatic about this ;) So will I; I'll have to Dish up a 2nd 622.

Cheers,
