D* would rather have $150 than $840?

but how much money a month are they paying to rent that free hddvr? people forget about the 20 dollars a month or so that you pay for rental fee. add that up over 24 months and you get $480 as opposed to the $199 lease you pay up front for directv. its like aarons says.....do the math!!

What are you talking about? I pay E* $6 a month. Same as I would pay D*. With cable you can buy a dvr, like a Sony dhg and pay nothing for monthly service.

E* charges me $12 for a 622 and a 211. I think E* charges $6 for every HD receiver.Let me correct this E* charges me $6 dollars not $12. They charged me $12 for the first month because the first bill I had to pay for 2 months of service.

But you are a long time customer (and such a happy one at that) like I am. And of course you have a reputation in the SAT industry that makes them cringe.:p
Well they only have to put up with me for 2 more years probably. I figure it will take about 2 years for FIOS's DVR to mature beyond 20 hours of HD. Its available to me now but its just too small. No excuse for putting 160 GB drive in that thing. PQ is a no brainer choice and rain fade is ridiculously bad around here.

Where do you live, on top of Mount Washington New Hampshire the most extreme weather location in the US? I said it another thread, your dish needs realigned if you are getting constant drops in Virginia. One downpour doest count as "ridiculously bad".

cable companies will charge you around 20 dollars a month to lease the ``free'' hddvr. with directv, you pay the cost upfront. like i said, do the math......its cheaper every time.

All sats normally come in at 90-100 on the signal meters. And often it goes out before the rain actually gets to you. Yes we do have very violent thunderstorms here in summer and no it didnt happen just one time. You can see signs of rain fade, i.e severe blocking to complete outages with every thunderstorm. Rain Fade
I had thought the bigger Dish may have helped but its the same problem as the 3 Lnb. OTA reception can also suffer from atmospheric conditions as well. PS I believe where I live is displayed on every post.

And E* charges you per DVR that you have. With D* you pay one DVR fee, regardless of how many DVR's you have on your account.
Half true ! Your right you only have to pay the "DVR fee", once. But you still have to pay $4.99 per month for each receiver after the first. .So IMO you really aren't saving anything. So if you have a HR-20 ,and a R-15 it will cost you $5.99 for dvr fee and another $4.99 for additional receiver.

and for the 1000th time, the 4.99 fee is the old mirroring fee you were paying when you owned your equipment.

Its not really old since it still applies today .Whether your talking about Lease fee's or mirror fee's. its the same thing and has been for quite sometime now.I have D* for 3 rooms ,before I had dvr I was only paying $4.99 for 2 receivers. Now that I have my HR20 it costs me an extra $5.99 per month. You can own all your equipment now,and you still have to pay those fees.Same fee's if you lease also.

This is actually getting pretty funny. Right now, on D*'s website they are giving away $100 in bill credits, a $50 gift card, and a portable dvd player to go along with the current NFLST/Premiere package deal. So, I ask again, how stupid is it to charge $200 for their HD Dvr? They can keep all that and just give me the dvr for free and they would have a new customer. Seriously, they have no business sense whatsoever.

Actually they would charge you the $ 200 as mentioned, (this is for accounting purposes) and then Credit you any value that you bargined for.

U-verse should be here by the end of the year, so I'll have to wait until then for BTN. I'll have to go to my friend's house for the Y-St., and Akron games. Heck, from what I hear D* won't even have those games in HD since they don't have enough satellites. I think their brainless actions are because of how much they pay for ST. I could care less about ST.

Actually the lack of the first few games being in HD has nothing to do with D*.
The majority of the BTN games will be in HD, NOT all.

The first two Buckeye games are available in HD. D* is showing them in SD. Not sure what you mean by D* has nothing to do with it.

This kind of thing cracks me up when people say a large business like D* has no business sense.

Take look at what they have achived financially then take a look at what you have achieved. They didn't get to where they are now by mistake or accident.

And this isn't just about D*, I am sure people say the same garbage about dish. But sinse I don't care about Dish I don't read what is posted about them. Nor am I interested in researching it. My point is, unless there is a sat company owner piping up in here or even an exec at a large sat comp here, no one that posts here has any idea what it takes to run a successful sat company. Just because it doesn't make sense to you, doesn't mean that it's dumb. It means you don't understand but rather than say "I don't understand", it's better to say, "they have no clue what they are doing".
If it made good business sense for them, they would do it. They are not in the business of providing free TV. They are in the business to turn a profit.
They make mistakes, but when a company is that large, it can't turn on a dime. It takes time to evalute what is wrong and correct it.

Show me where you found this info.

Also, I would not count D* out yet, just because the new sat is not operational yet, doesn't mean they cannot show it in HD.
The NFL has not started at that point so they DO have bandwidth to do it if they decide to.

Last time I checked, D* wasn't a human being. They are being run by some "overachieving" genius CEO. Guys named Lay, Skilling, Ebbers, etc., (I could go on forever) were CEO geniuses. I feel so "underachieving" right now. Ohh wait, come to think of it, if I were born a vegetable I would have "achieved" more than those geniuses. I feel better now.
