OFFICIAL External Storage Information

Then smart customer will wait for a policy or intent regarding what content will have DRM. It would be stupid to buy drives and pay for this service if everything of interest will have DRM now or soon.

If DISH has already stated a policy or intent regarding what content will have DRM, is there a link?

Search for 'HBO' and 'DRM' here.

If you multiply the probabilities you get a change of BOTH of drives failing.
So say 50% change that drive will fail in 5 years would be 25% that BOTH drives will fail in 5 years... But when you have 2 drives, there is a higher change that ONE of the drives will fail, but not sure what the formula would be...

Don't forget the multiplier that you add to the formula for drives that get handled by the user versus a drive that is safe inside a desktop...

They just announced that L4.41 software release will allow 3 (three) moves of the External Hard Drive to different 622 or 722 receivers.

This is to allow for receivers that die and need to be replaced.

Just be sure that you don't use up all 3 moves -- and then find that your receiver has died ! :(

A later software release will implement a software key that will allow the ext hd to work for any receiver on your account.

Quick Question, I noticed the doc at the beginning says "When you connect the drive for the first time, you may see a pop-up..." Does this mean that not all HDD will be reformatted? I have a 500GB mybook that I have already connected and got to the "option not available" point.
According to the tech forum, that drive isn't compatible if you don't get the prompt to format it. I've read that WD's MyBook, maybe only certain sizes, aren't compatible. That's sure to change though because of the popularity of them.

Where did you read that?

I got a 750GB WD "My Book" drive and it is seen by the 622, but never asked me to format it.

Does that mean this drive will not work with my 622?

Scott, asking questions? I thought he was omniscient. My world is crashing around me. ;)

Same with mine, and I saw someone else in these threads reporting the same thing. It may depend on whether the drive comes totally empty or not.

I was thinking of emailing the Tech Forum with that question, but I thought that it might be a question that is answered by our experiences on Aug. 15.

PS Scott, Can you ask what time on Aug 15 we can call ?

NO. It will do that AFTER you activate the service. Click on Manage device, and you'll get the call us to activate warning.

I am confident that this will occur the first time you try to actually do something with it.

I am relieved that the device can be connected to a different receiver three times; that means I can upgrade to a 722, and not lose everything I am going to archive on Wednesday. :)

I saw a post by Mark L. at the other site where he used a 250gb my book in testing and it worked very well.

Just rewinded and I still have it in the buffer.... I'll will post word-for-word what she said:

Damnit !! I should have hit RECORD.... Now the buffer emptied !

Anyone who recorded it, FF to the steps where they showed hooking up a drive and showed screen shots of what the receiver does when connecting it. She clearly said that if the receiver determines that it's compatible, it will give the prompt to format it.

They don't reply the forum until Thursday....

They also said pretty much any good drive will work. Just recommended not getting a cheap off brand.

From tech chat racap

"Purchase any off-the-shelf HDD, between 40GB and 750GB. Dedicate it for DVR storage."

I connected my WD 500 GB "My Book" and the 622 formatted it and did the reboot. I guess I'll see how it goes Wednesday.

My 500 GB My Book Essentials was recognized, but like Scott and a few others I have not been prompted to reformat it. Put it back on the PC, deleted all the preinstalled crap (maybe it wants to see an empty drive??) and relabeled it to WDUSB1 (maybe it doesn't like the spaces in My Book label??). No change. I noticed it was formated FAT32 from the factory, which I thought was odd - expected NTFS. Did not try reformatting to NTFS, will just wait till Wednesday...

Those of you who got the 622 to format a my book: was it Essentials or Premium? just curious if there's a correlation...
