Hello,

I am having a shadow problem on my 46XBR4 TV. I am attaching pictures of the problem and info on the problem.

Problem Details
- Shadow occurs when TV is switched on after atleast 1 or 2 hours of being switched off
- Shadow occurs for about 3 to 5 mins and corrects itself.
- Shadow is very prominent on the text.
- There are about three horizontal straight lines on the picture in the middle of the screen.
- Shadow occurs prominently on the left of the screen. The right side looks okay.
- I have removed all inputs to the TV and switched on and see the problem appearing as you can see in the first couple of pictures.

Any ideas on how to solve this problem? Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks and Regards.

I have had pretty good luck with Sony support online with a variety of questions on several products. You could enter a summary of the same information as in your post above in the formatted help request form and mention that you have screenshots. (There is a character limit.) They'll respond to that via "regular" e-mail, probably within the same day, and you could embed those same pictures in your reply to that. Good luck with it...!

Do you still have any warranty left? Definitly a problem with the TV set itself.

Thank You Bhelms. I have contacted Sony Support via phone and they asked me to contact a local technician and the local technician isnt able to schedule an appointment since the last 2 weeks. I sent Sony Support the email as you suggested and they responded asking me to call. I emailed them back saying I already did that and sent them the pictures in reply and asked to please help.

Thanks Ilya for the reply. Yes I am still in 1st year warranty, but that will expire in 30 days. Can you or anyone tell if it is a good idea to go ahead and take the extendend warranty so that I am covered after the 1st year expires.

Thanks JKElect for the reply. Yes I am trying to get the technician come take a look at it, but am not being successful with getting an appointment. He is the only one within range of where I live. The next nearest sony authorized technician is 250 miles away. :-(

Thanks and Regards

If you reported the problem before the warranty expiration (make sure you have some confirmation of that, e.g. trouble ticket number, the date it was open, the date and the name of the support person you talked to, etc.) then you are covered even if the repair takes place after the warranty period. If you can still get an extended warranty at a reasonable price, I definitly would, just to be on a safe side: who knows what else to expect from this set.

Sony is usually good with warranty repairs. A bulb died in my RPTV several months after its warranty ended, but Sony has exchanged it for free anyway.

The e-mail transaction with Sony should have a "case ID number" associated with it. (The first reply from the eSupport group titled "Sony Support Request Acknowledgment" will be an automated msg. with that ID number.) Save all correspondence to support your timely claim.

I'm only luke warm about extended warranties. Altho' your current unit seems to have a problem, it should be corrected under your original warranty even if it (I hope not) requires several attempts to get it fixed. If you buy the extended warranty now, make sure it can be transferred to another set in case your current one gets replaced as the remedy for the current problem. It would be a true waste otherwise. You might want to google your model number to see what other problems folks are having with these sets to help you make your decision.

I have had a lot of Sony products over the years, and a few problems. For the most part I have performed service myself. The rest was done in regional service centers. My only disappointment was an expensive Hi-8 camcorder that lasted only about 5 years and was deemed uneconomical to repair after I already dumped some money into it. Otherwise I agree with Ilya re: Sony being a good company to deal with...

Check your wiring. Thios sounds like a cable crosstalk issue. Not seeing it all the time doesn't mean it doen't exist. Make sure none of your input cables are in contact with the cable/antenna wire or power supply. Also, if you receive signal from cable, try disconnecting the cable wire to see if that doesn't clear up the problem.:D

No, because the pictures show the problem when nothing is hooked up. The problem is in the electronics, not mechanical. Sony used to be notorious for poor wave soldering causing components to lift off the board over time. Thought they had that fixed, but who knows. It might be as simple as hitting a few components with a soldering iron.
