Well yeah when you add a new satellite it adds more space right? Lol..

Saying you like OWN is just like someone saying they enjoy iTunes and the artificial limitations that come with it. Yeah... Right.

Yeah right? All that "extra space" is being clogged up by MPEG-2 SD duplicate streams because they won't grow a pair and get people off the antiquated MPEG-2 hardware. They're STILL installing it FFS!! For every two MPEG-2 streams they kill, they can fit THREE MPEG-4 streams. And don't forget, every channel that's available in both HD/SD is taking up two streams to accommodate those still using SD hardware. They'd have the bandwidth for every single available HD channel if they would simply dump the duplicates.

They need to just bite the bullet and change everyone over to HD equipment so they can reclaim that space.
 
The total count doesn't matter much because most subscribers only get one or a couple of RSN's. DirecTV advertise so many HD channels but most subscribers will not get dozens of RSN HD channels and their alternates.

What matters is DirecTV is missing many basic HD channels that most other providers already carry. It comes down to how many hd channels each individual subscriber gets.

I will say DirecTV carries almost every game in every sport in HD including all the league pass packages. There are some exceptions but not many.

Yep I switched in July I got one HD receiver(for my main tv) and an SD one for the bedroom (didn't think I need HD to sleep through,:D ) I thought it would be cheaper but I'm getting charged the same for each so I probably would have gone HD for both. dumb decision I guess. (but I still sleep through everything on the bedroom tv.....:rolleyes:)

All of the rsns are available if you want to pay extra for them. Also, the number of hd channels available doesn't matter me. All that matters is that they carry the ones I want to watch. I'm a Yankee fan, so that means even if Dish carries every hd channel except YES, I won't subscribe to Dish.

Right, If I can't get the sports I want from my provider I will leave, which is why I no longer have Dish. I got Dish back in 1997. Once Dish Dropped MSG a couple of years ago I was gone. I did like Dish's hardware but I didn't like the sliding scale for mirroring fees on their STB's. I did like that Dish carried more of the basic cable channels in HD, though the lack of a hd feed from MSG got on my nerves, when MSG went completely dark on DISH I was done with them.

It comes down to programing, if they won't provide what I want then, that third party provider will NOT get my dollars.

They would need to replace millions of receivers, that's a big bullet to bite. There are far more SD units in homes than HD units.
 
Someone did the math. It would cost more to replace all of the sd units than put up a new satellite. However, if they had been more proactive and been installing mpeg4 receivers/dvrs for sd for the last several years, the replacement cost would have been far less.
 
I brought up a similar point in the Dish forum. What I got was a comparison of forcing out SD to current political trends. In the end, if we had an HD only platform then nobody would have to pay an HD enabling fee. Also, network cost should go down as they are paying to uplink two separate feeds.

It certainly would have been better than adding that shrieking troll, Nancy Grace's network.

DirecTV needs to make some smarter choices about what HD programming they carry or they will never be considered seriously by the HD enthusiast. This is a good start but I still won't subscribe to them until they add a few more key HD channels like Fuse, The Hub, OWN, Sundance, and of course the mentioned GSN.

Still don't understand why we don't have this in HD yet, being that Directv partially owns the channel.

They should have stopped MPEG2 SD installs after they launched their first HD satellite in 2007. So much for planning ahead. Ridiculous.
 
I'm sure what they will have to do is start swapping out the SD units for HD ones when they become defective. It will take a long time but DirecTV won't have to do a mass swap that way

I can tell for a fact they aren't doing the SD HD swap yet.

My sister just had 3 old philips receivers replaced, and they brought D12's.

They would have giving her 3 H receivers for $300 installed. So what would you do? LOL!

She Also has HR21 and H23 on her account.

You would think they would have offered her Whole home or something if they were worried about changing out SD equipment.

Actually, Satelliteracer said if everything went well we could expect "several" of the channels "by Friday," but "not all of them." So we can expect some this week, but not all, and not necessarily on Friday, but by Friday.
