It's quite popular to do so... one of the wing joints I frequently visit has their HD TV's hooked up via Composite cables to DirecTV boxes.

As a kid I was always amused by the sun fade each year.. Would watch the good o' analog C-Band signals on cable fade to static then eventually the cable company would put up a cheesy slide with a "sun" on it explaining the issue.

My guess is not IF they make up but WHEN.. all programmers want their programming in as many eyes as possible.. It's realistically only a matter of time before ABC/Disney and Dish become 'pals' again.

Cable here used to in the 80s/90s have a "Public Access" channel... talk about some interesting stuff... It also was interesting because after 11pm it would show stuff that most would not let their kids near. Shows ranged from folks with some production skills and semi-pro setups.. to the guy...

You could always look at someone like these guys: Better Cable TV with NeX3! They recently started offering Dish at my apartment complex I live in.. They have 3 dishes mounted on / near each building.. and I think use a QAM type setup in the dish receivers (I am not sure which model they use)...

All providers have fits with channels, E* is not alone.. D* does it.. I had AT&T Uverse drop channels due to disagreement.. Time Warner has before too.. Your really not safe with any provider...
