DISH to deliver Olympics in 4K HDR

FWIW last night they broadcast some ice skating on 147-05, and the picture was everything I expected. it did appear that the producers were still getting used to the equipment, though. At least initially there were too many long distance shots, showing the entire rink with the skaters looking...

DISH to deliver Olympics in 4K HDR

It doesn’t matter to me in the slightest, but the original Dish press release that I saw listed both 540 and 147-05. I was just reporting what I saw, for the benefit of others, not complaining about something missing. I just got my 4K TV on Black Friday, and my Hopper 3 pretty much exactly when...

DISH to deliver Olympics in 4K HDR

147-05 does show on my program guide, named simply “4K”. 540 does not. Unfortunately, the guide currently says “off air” until 9PM Friday (Pacific time), and then switches to ‘“Olympics 2018” in 12-hour blocks. This is not exactly helpful in terms of scheduling events to record. Now, it could...

    4K Events Discussion Thread

A LOT of people (including myself) last year replaced a 3808CI with an X4300H, which does support 4K and even Dolby Vision (with a firmware update). You can still get a new one for under $1000. Or of course you could get this year’s model at full price. The Audyssey improvements and all the...

DISH to deliver Olympics in 4K HDR

No question that hockey is a better use of 4K than curling. I’m just not a hockey fan.

DISH to deliver Olympics in 4K HDR

I suspect that it probably has as much to do with the fact that, to the uninitiated, watching curling is almost as exciting as watching paint dry (or ice melt). Personally I find it fascinating, but more along the lines of a chess match than a visually dramatic spectacle such as figure skating...

DISH to deliver Olympics in 4K HDR

There are few sporting events more stationary than curling! ;-)

    4K Events Discussion Thread

The original press release lists “NBC Olympics 4K HDR” on both 540 and 147.05. It also says “NBC Sports Network is channel 159 on DISH. To watch the Olympics on NBCSN, choose this channel on your guide and you’ll be directed to channel 147.01. The Hopper Olympics App will be available on channel...

    4K Events Discussion Thread

Well, Dish has now announced that they WILL be carrying the 4K HDR Olympic coverage, which is good news. However, the 4K channel is still not showing, and there is no 4K schedule as of yet. Any ideas on when we might expect something?

If You Dont Like Dish Perhaps Its Time To Switch

Thanks, Squeezon, for saying what I've been thinking for a long time. Of course Dish isn't perfect, and I've had my share of clueless support people over the years. But I've also had, on average, a very high level of support from people who were both courteous and knowledgeable. The quality of...

    Leaving Directv for Dish

Yes, this is how the system works. What does this have to do with the discussion of one Hopper vs. two?

    Leaving Directv for Dish

you don't, unless you have a requirement to record 4 satellite events simultaneously outside of primetime hours, or 3 non-major-network events during primetime hours. There's a very vocal minority on this site who are holding the position that anything fewer than 5 satellite tuners is...

Upgrade to Hopper now or wait for bug fixes?

Finally having our bedroom TV in HD, off the same central receiver, is fantastic. Overall the interface improvements are really nice, although there is of course a small learning curve to get used to the differences. Unless OTA is a deal-breaker, I'd say go for it.

    Hopper Commercial Misleading

Is there really anybody out there who's been watching commercials or reading ads for the last decade or two who doesn't know what "up to" means? It can either be "some people get this all of the time" or "all people get this some of the time," but it never means "all people get this all of the...

Sorry, but I can only see H/J failure in the future...

I couldn't agree more. OTOH, looking at it from Dish's perspective, how many Hopper/Joey users will have more than one Joey? If the vast majority of their customers only have one, and they don't charge a fee for it, that's a lot of revenue lost. On the third hand, if losing that revenue attracts...

Sorry, but I can only see H/J failure in the future...

"you keep using that word. I do not think you know what it means." FORCED means you have no option. CHOICE means that you can choose to upgrade, or choose to switch to a diffrerent provider, or choose to stay with your current setup. This is TV, people! Nobody is putting a gun to anybody's head.

Sorry, but I can only see H/J failure in the future...

Sparc, nobody is telling anybody to "suck it up and accept the higher fees." Several points here: 1. those that are willing to pay the higher fees feel that the features of the Hopper/Joey are worth the cost, whereas those who aren't interested in those new features aren't willing to pay for...

Universal Sports Network Announces Multi-Platform Distribution Deal with DISH Network

Thanks, Iceberg. I'm really not much of a sports fan, but olympics and those bike races are exceptions. I am much relieved.

    Hopper blocker

I would argue that for every guy who wants to watch porn BY HIMSELF without wife (or without wife knowing) (which implies a lot of issues all by itself) there are a dozen parents who would INSIST on knowing what their children are watching. This setup gives parents a LOT more control than two...

What hopper features are you most excited about?

    1. I am looking forward to finally getting HD on our bedroom TV without the need of a separate, non-integrated, receiver or DVR. This is, of course, what whole-home DVR means. 2. The extra tuner and PTAT should resolve the few scheduling issues we've had up to this point.

Universal Sports Network Announces Multi-Platform Distribution Deal with DISH Network

Isn't this the channel that used to be Versus? Does this mean that we'll need to subscribe to a sports package to see its Olympic coverage, not to mention bike races such as Tour de France or the Tour of California?

Hopper - will 3 tuners be enough?

The point that you and the other members of your chorus don't get is that Dish is perfectly capable of charging twice as much for a receiver with 5 or 6 tuners as they do for a receiver with 3 tuners. What makes you think that the fees for a box with twice as many tuners should cost the same to...
