    Processor Activity

I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 notebook computer, 2 GB RAM, Windows XP Professional, 1.6 GHz processor. I noticed that the processor was unusually busy (30%) when I wasn’t doing anything. Task Manager showed Internet Explorer 8 was the application and I isolated the activity to being parked on...

    Disappearing Pointer

I experienced a first this morning while visiting a web site. In a small rectangular portion of the screen, my pointer disappears. If I move it through the region (horizontally or vertically) it reappears on the other side. The region is a solid gray color. When I left the site and came back...

    RSA Security Doohickey

I got one of the RSA gadgets (about the size of a key) that generates a random 6-digit number every minute to use with my stock market trading accounts. I append the 6-digit number to my account password. The gadget is marketed for other uses, too (my brother’s access to a real estate database...

    Internet Explorer 8

I've had Internet Explorer 8 on my computer for a few months and just took it off and went back to 7. Best move I ever made! I didn’t realize just how terrible IE 8 performance was on my machine. Now that I’m back on 7, pages load faster, scrolling is quicker and the computer simply works...

Adding Windows XP To A Vista Machine

I have a relatively new notebook that came with Vista and I want to add Windows XP for dual-boot use. I set up a partition for XP using Acronis Disk Director, but nothing happens when I click on “Install Now” (or whatever the message is) from the XP Professional installation disk. I get no...

    Computer Monitor Recommendations

I'm in the market for a 1920x1200 monitor. I like all the various inputs provided on the Gateway 24”, but I’ve read some comments that say the screen is too bright. I’d appreciate comments about 1920x1200 monitors from anyone who lives with one. TIA

    Mercury Insurance Commercial

Mercury Insurance has a commercial that shows the letter "M" in a corn field. A man suspects Mercurian aliens did it. The commercial ends with a tractor in the background. I wonder how many people in the general audience actually "get it."

    My 508 Is Working Better

This morning (April 2) I noticed that one feature of my 508 seems to be back the way it used to be. When I pause a recording or live broadcast, then press the "jump ahead" button, it does a frame-by frame advance! Hitting the "jump back" button goes back a few frames, just like it did before...

    CompUSA

An item in today's (2007-03-01) Washington Post noted that CompUSA is closing over half of its stores: Is this the beginning of the end for CompUSA? I'd hate to see it go.

    Anyone Using Insteon?

I've used X-10 devices since the early 1980's, but now I'm considering a migration to the Insteon system. It claims to be more stable and reliable than X10. I don't know anyone who uses it, but I suspect someone here does. If you do, please share your thoughts. The system is described here.
