    FTA help needed

Unfortunately, being off by one degree will kill the deal, so you have to be uber-accurate in how you're aiming it. I recommend a Wixey digital angle meter for the elevation and probably the North Star for the longitude measurement.

    beefing up a j-pole

If you decide to go the threaded pipe route, the threads will be wanting to come unscrewed with the torque. You could either (a) have Bluto tighten them with The Big Wrench, (b) have Bubba the welder run a couple of tacks, or (c) put them together with red LocTite....

    Custom Pole Mounts

How far out from the brick does it need to be? If it's only an inch or two, you could use Unistrut and Unistrut pipe clamps pretty easy to do that.... My installation uses Unistrut and U-bolts...

    My new Ku dish

My suggestion is to ignore the numbers stamped on the brackets. Those numbers stamped on the mounting brackets are pretty much "cartoon quality." There's enough there to pretend the dish manufacturer did something, but they're certainly not going to get you to the one tenth of a degree...

Yeah, that's an issue. I used 90 degree fittings plus I cut those bolts back.

    inclinometer placement question

I guess where you put it depends on what angle you're trying to measure. If you're trying to measure apparent dish elevation above flat horizontal, it's a pretty easy matter to just lay a flat (very flat) board across the face of the dish with the bottom of the board resting on the LNB arm...

    help me spend my money

Well, I'm in the desert southwest, too, and after a whole pot-load of research you can see by my signature what I came up with. The only other option would be an Azbox premium+, but it seemed like a lot more $$ for not much benefit.

recommended dish size vs. bare minimum

Keep in mind that the signal strength is proportional to the surface area of the dish; more important, in your case, is the fact that the surface area is proportional to he square of the diameter. A 100 cm dish has not twice, but four times the surface area of a 50 cm dish.

    FTA: Fine Entertainment!

So, last night we had one of my wife's girlfriends over for dinner. We watched the ball game a little after the meal. Then when the ball game ended, I showed off some of the FTA channels. She was all like "ooohh!" and "aaaah!" about Saudi TV and Asian shows in whatever language. And as I...

    fta installation

All you need to know can be found on this board, trust me. These guys are like genius level. You biggest challenge will be getting the motor set up and the dish aimed. There's plenty on the topic, so get out your reading glasses....

    How long is too long?

Congrats on joining a pretty elite (if I do say so myself) group in FTA! :up Between the mechanical skills required, the geometry, and the programming and set-up, there's not all that many people who can put together a functioning system. Some have one of those skills in abundance, but to...

advice wanted - point dishes faster!

Buy a used Birdog off Craigslist. Load it up with the desired sat and maybe a few more nearby before you leave the house. I'm not a professional installer, but the Birdog sure made my life easy aiming a motor dish. (Hint: Search for "bird dog" as well as "birdog")

    It's alive!!

Well, you guys can chalk up another mark on the wall for helping yet another clueless newbie get his FTA up and running! and a big THANKS for doing so! I haven't yet figured it all out, but I've got 15-20 channels and I'm still scanning sats for more. I have to tell y'all - it would not be...

    New to FTA

The CNX is, from what I can tell, primarily for the pirate trade. You can probably find a used Coolsat on eBay for less money, which will be a ,uch better bl;ind scan unit.... Keep reading about the boxes. You might want to keep reading about dishes and motors, too.

    Elevation and/or declination on a WS9036

So, you're getting there. Setting up a motor dish is not - trust me! - a simple matter. The first step is to make sure that your mounting pole is somewhere better than super-sturdy and exactly vertical. The next step is to set the elevation of the rotational axis of your motor. Note that...

    SG-2100 or SG-9120 for 36" dish?

I've got a 9210; I'm just a little on the disappointed side because I think it's got more rotational "play" in the shaft than I thought it would. I haven't checked it again to make sure;. It is definitely a heavy duty motor, but get longer bolts to hold it to the pole mounting bracket; the...

    Elevation and/or declination on a WS9036

At the risk of encouraging anyone to spend even more money on this hobby, I got one of these digital 1/10 degree (supposedly) angle gauges, and it's proven to be pretty darn handy.... Amazon.com: Wixey WR300 Digital Angle Gauge: Home...

    Elevation and/or declination on a WS9036

I've got the same dish, with the SG9100 motor; setting the elevation had me pulling my remaining hair out. IMHO, the scales on the dish mount are of "cartoon" quality. What you want to do is to set your motor elevation very, very carefully, and then set your dish elevation relative to true...
