After some fussing and feuding I thought maybe a new thread was warranted. The existing thread could be for news and ongoing developments and this one for opinion. Hopefully in a couple weeks both will be obsolete. Keep in mind that the only opinion that matters is ceo@echostar.com as Riffjim pointed out.

OotLink - What channels do you watch? I bet alot of the "sports addicts" dont watch any of your channels and hate having to be stuck paying for them. So it goes both ways.

NO IT DOESN'T GO BOTH WAYS. How many times do I have to tell you? Are you really that BRAINDEAD? SportsChannels like this one cost more than 5-10 regular channels. It's sportschannels that are SOLELY RESPONSIBLE for for the escalating cable/dbs bills.

DEAL WITH IT, and STOP DENYING IT!

so let's drop 30 of the fluff crap from E* that 4 people watch. We all get lower rates, the people who want BTN get it, and more transponders are freed up for more mpeg4 HD.
the argument sports channels are killing your bill is silly. What about the dozens of channels no one watches but pay for????

If you think the HBO's, Showtime's, TLC don't ever ask for rate hikes you are mistaken. To blame any rise in a bill on sports programming is stupid.

Every channel charges as much as the market will bear. That is a constant.

HBOs and Showtimes?

You really are dumb. Those are premiums thus don't cost the average customer 1 penny that's the point. Oh and notice they do just fine as premiums because they offer a product people want and are willing to pay for.

As for SHOPPING CHANNELS, those are MY FAVORITE. Do I watch them? hell no. They are my favorite because they PAY to be on Dish and thus LOWER MY BILL.

What do you mean by "market"? Who is the consumer? Don't say the cable/dbs customer. They clearly aren't the consumer. They aren't choosing whether or not to buy a particular station.

Jeff it was a blanket statement as TLC was also included but if felt better calling me dumb so be it. Feel better?

Further if you want to have 300 shopping channels and pay $5 a month for 400 channels of crap-o-vision you have that right but I would rather shell out some more tokens and get what I want when I want it.

There are no such channels.

E* doesn't add channels that no one watches. It costs them huge of amounts of money to uplink one channel, they certainly only add channels that people are interested in.

One constant trend is that most people are totally clueless about other people and what they like. People tend to socialize with people who are like themselves, and so have no idea about the other ones.

PS Each sports channels charges more than any non-sports channel. (The only exception are the "a la carte" channels like HBO).

Sorry, but I am going to say the customer. The providers assemble packages of channels which are sold to customers. Most people have the choice of going with a local cable company, D* or E*. Each one of these providers offers multiple tiers and options.

The channels within those packages and tiers, with the price of each, is what makes the ultimate product (i.e. a subscription) attractive to the customer.

Too few channels, doesn't attract that many customers. Too high a price for the perceived value of the package, likewise.

Thus in the end, it is customer demand for the channels, combined with the price they are willing to pay for the service, that drives the price of each channel.

A channel that has low ratings, or one that viewers don't care much about, cannot demand a premium price. They can try to demand one, but no one will pay it. A provider would drop them and elect to withstand the complaints from their customers.

In the case of the BTN, there are a certain number of customers who really want the channel and will put pressure on their providers to offer it. So the BTN is attempting to use that leverage to generate the maximum amount of revenue. If they set the price too high, they run the risk of alienating their own customer base and having them side with the provider's management. If they set it too low, then everyone will carry them, but they won't generate an acceptable level of revenue.

The same is true for every channel. I'm sure the E! channel attempts to get every last dollar they can squeeze out of the providers and advertisers. To charge the most they can without having D* or E* or Comcast or whomever drop them from their lineup.

In the end, it all comes down to customer demand and maximizing revenue.

......literally hours after I made a deal to switch to D*. :neener Install scheduled for next week. Sorry, Charlie but you were a bit late with me. I could cancel my install but I think I'll move ahead with it. You still don't carry EI and I'm pretty sure you won't carry the NHL network either.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Season 2 order already in hand:

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

Here i am over a year later and just finished season 1. Not great but not as bad as I was expecting. Did not care for the barefoot captain stuff but overall ok. Actually looking forward to see what they did for season 2.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.

Where is it going to come from -- specifically?

Why do you think cleaning technology won't improve in the next few hundred years? HEPA filtration was invented as part of the Manhattan Project.

I don't know, but I still don't like her walking through the station or the academy with out her shoes. It looks unprofessional and very "hippy like" for someone of her status and I personally don't get off to feet, so there is that. ;)

Stay out of my office. I rarely have shoes or socks on in the office. My office and business is at home though :clapping

I just thought her behavior, including the bare feet thing, was disrespectful to her position.

Stargate SG-1 cancelled, Atlantis renewed

The future of Stargate is in question today, as SCI FI Channel has cancelled the long-running Stargate SG-1, Multichannel News reported today and a GateWorld source has confirmed. The news regrettably follows the airing of the show's milestone two-hundredth episode on Friday.

Stargate Atlantis, meanwhile, has been renewed for a fourth season, with the network hoping to see that the spin-off series can stand alone, according to a source.

They didn't sell many, they were pricey and not out long. Quickly got replaced by the Hopper.
T
They were high-end specialty, somewhat buggy and the 612/622/722 just overwhelmed it in popularity.
HipKat
I think they were more of a transitional receiver bridging the VIPs to the Hopper. They were a PITA to install and were buggy. Personally, I thought at the time that they were the best receiver out there. The versatility of the VIP's with the new Hopper GUI and, by far, the coolest-looking front plate and lighting.

Well if it is because of reliability that wouldnt shock me.I went through 5 or 6 of them in little over 2 years. I loved the Sling when it worked! Saved lots of money having it in the day. That was probably 15 or 16 years ago?

I don't recall that they came out just before hopper, but rather that they came out even before 722. Or could be thinking of 921.

As to the title pf the post, "rare" does not necessarily mean valuable or desirable.
