A little background: I had DirecTV for several years before cancelling and getting a grey market subscription to BEV, mainly for the HD programming. Now that D* is expanding their HD lineup I'm returning to DirecTV (still keeping a reduced programming package on BEV). Install is scheduled for next Saturday afternoon. I'm having an HR20 and two standard receivers installed, along with a Slimline dish.

I would prefer to do my own install, but that's not an option unless I want to give up the incentives D* is offering. In general, how is the quality of the installers? I'm really picky and it's important to me to have a neat, professional job. In fact, today I ran RG6 to all the rooms I will have set up because I really don't want the installer fishing cable through my walls and ceiling. Hopefully he won't give me a hard time about this - after all, I'm making his job easier.

Does the average installer have much experience setting up the Slimline dish? I see very, very few of them in my area. Will the install include an antenna to receive OTA HD? D* offers some, but not all, of my locals in HD.

Finally, does D* have a history of missed appointments? Although I'm not at work on Saturday I still don't want to wait and wind up with a no call/no show situation.

Like I stated, I would much rather do the install myself, but any tips from fellow forum members on how to make the install go smoother (questions to ask, things to watch out for, etc.) would be much appreciated.

Thanks much!

I just switched back to DirecTV and my local installer/dealer let me take the gear and do the install myself. They had no problem at all! I also got the current promotions. I am VERY happy with DirecTV!

Did you run two cables for the HR20? Also, did they come out to one central point that is fairly close to a ground source (within 20 feet or so), and has a clear view of the souther sky? Did you run phone cable to each outlet also? Most installers are very happy to use prewire, because it saves them time and having to drill through your walls or floors.

This depends upon how long they have been installing. Most installers in my area average 4-8 HD installs per week. An OTA antenna is not included in your standard installation, and you should expect to pay extra for it if you want the D* installer to install it. In addition, OTA can not be diplexed in with the new HD so it will require a seperate cable run to any TV that you want to receive it.

Finally, does D* have a history of missed appointments? Although I'm not at work on Saturday I still don't want to wait and wind up with a no call/no show situation.

Unfortunately, this does happen. Even more so right now because of the overbooking of techs caused by the NFL Sunday Ticket deal and the launch of the new HD channels. What time is your appointment window? If it is an AM appointment, you are less likely to be missed or rescheduled because of overbooking.

Like I stated, I would much rather do the install myself, but any tips from fellow forum members on how to make the install go smoother (questions to ask, things to watch out for, etc.) would be much appreciated.

As an installer, I am always grateful to any customer that has actually moved their furniture/TV/entertainment center out from the wall about 3 feet or so, allowing me to get behind the TV and make all of my connections.

I dd run two cables for the HR20. All cables run to the basement and come out of the south end of my house about a foot off the ground, right near where my D* was previously installed. There are phone jacks near the TVs in two rooms, but not in the third. I guess I'll have to add another jack...

The OTA antenna is not a big deal, since I still have my BEV subscription for the CBS and PBS stations that D* does not offer in HD. If it was free, I would have taken it, though.

Unfortunately I have a PM appointment. Couldn't get AM. I can understand the overbooking, but I will not be happy if the installer does not have the courtesy to call if he can't make it.

I will move furniture to give the installer easy access. Thanks for your reply. Sounds like you are a top-notch installer. I wish you were coming to my house:)

You want the tech to show up, Call D* and note the job cust will do own install.
A
Yup. I've done my "own" installs with both Dish and DirecTV. All the cables were run ahead of time, the installer left me to attach the receivers while he mounts the dish, and everyone is happy that it went so easy.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Season 2 order already in hand:

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

Here i am over a year later and just finished season 1. Not great but not as bad as I was expecting. Did not care for the barefoot captain stuff but overall ok. Actually looking forward to see what they did for season 2.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

Where would this "dirt" come from? Dead skin and dandruff?

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.

Where is it going to come from -- specifically?

Why do you think cleaning technology won't improve in the next few hundred years? HEPA filtration was invented as part of the Manhattan Project.

I don't know, but I still don't like her walking through the station or the academy with out her shoes. It looks unprofessional and very "hippy like" for someone of her status and I personally don't get off to feet, so there is that. ;)

Stay out of my office. I rarely have shoes or socks on in the office. My office and business is at home though :clapping

I just thought her behavior, including the bare feet thing, was disrespectful to her position.

In Oregon, our premium boat gas is about a dollar more than our corn premium. Several stations only offer the non-corn premium grade.

It turns out I was justified in my suspicion.

Gavin Newsom somehow authorized the temporary move of the distribution date of the Winter blend to September 28th.

Since it was already "paid" for, I spent the two hours of my time watching the John Cena action movie on Apple TV, "Matchbox The Movie" even though the reviews were brutal. It was better than I expected, so I didn't feel like I had wasted an afternoon watching it. But it felt like another "Reacher"/"Neghley"/"Mission: Impossible"/"Fast & Furious" crash and blow stuff up with lots of automatic gunfire mixed in movie featuring covert CIA operatives.

I don't think we'll get a follow-up movie from this. I expect Mattel will have other toy lines to exploit.

PISTONS and THUNDER are finally testing on the stream server. PISTONS is showing the Ion/Scripps Sports promo loop filler that their NHL and WNBA feeds have, THUNDER has a "You are watching Thunder+" slate

The Clippers still haven't officially announced their TV plans beyond 10 simulcasts on KTLA, but the NBA's FAQ for ClipperVision is now live. The CLIPPERS feed is currently showing a loop of their Hawaii preseason game.

The Heat still haven't announced their West Palm Beach or Fort Myers affiliates. Since WPLG is streaming the games for free via their app, I doubt we'll be seeing the return of WPLG on stream.

So far nothing testing for the Bucks, Magic, Hawks or Hornets.

West Palm Beach is getting it on WTCN-CD/43 MNT. Still nothing for Fort Myers

Also, the Thunder's deal for KSBI/52 OKC and KQCW/19 Tulsa will be via a special cable and DIRECTV only feed of those stations. OTA viewers and Dish customers will be limited to 10 games.

Not seeing 44 (WVBT-DT/44 CW Norfolk ) on my D* app for firestick

It's only available for streaming customers, they still haven't added that batch of CW stations to satellite.

Even if it was, satellite customers still can't stream their CW affiliates via the app, just the Big 4, select PBS stations and some independents (mainly the ones that have full season NHL/NBA rights)
