How high will gas go? Jim Cramer says...

I just overheard an interview with Jim Cramer on MSNBC where he said, "five years from now, we'll look back and say, "Remember when gas was $3.00 gallon", and the possibility is that within five to ten years, the price of a gallon of gas will range from $10.00 - $15.00 gallon".

I'm a fan of Cramer and all, but I can't ever see $10 / gallon or more. What do you guys think? In any event, I think we will see $4 / gallon sometime next Spring (if not sooner). Is this the straw that will break the camels back and bring in the nuclear energy phase?

How high do you guys think gas will go?

kenny911, you're going to get a fight from those of us who own those vehicles, especially for legitimate reasons, like those who need a pick-up for their line of work! In my case, I have a full size Silverado, 16 mpg in the kind of driving I do. I need its capabilities and capacity occasionally on my "ranch", particularly for hauling firewood cut on my property and nearby. For the most part, however it is there on standby. I only take it on the road occasionally, mostly for other kinds of hauling and sometimes when my other 2 vehicles are spoken for. It's for this last reason that I have that truck, as a 3rd vehicle, vs. renting one only when needed. Otherwise I'm driving my more socially-responsible cars that get 24-29 mpg 90+% of the time.

OTOH, I also have some solid investments in oil companies (mostly BP) and other energy companies.

The eneregy problem is one that will be won with a lot of little solutions. We certainly can't just switch to another form of energy quickly. Look what would happen if electric vehicles became popular. The electric grid is running at close to maximum as it is. Tax the grid with another 20% load and the grid would be down. Also, how would you make the electricity? It has to come from somewhere. Nuclear is extremely expensive to build, and what do you do with the waste? (currently it costs far more to refurbish a nuclear reactor than the price we paid to have our last one built) It is a major problem today. If the demand for electricity goes up, so will the price. Electricity rates could rise as fast as oil. Some will say that corn alcohol is the answer, but just how much of the country needs to have corn growing to even make a slight dent in the oil demand. How much energy does it take to produce the alcohol from corn? Natural gas supplies are running out as well, so what is the next form of energy? Algy is being worked on for fuel, but is it the answer? We are probably going to have to have many different solutions to solve this problem. Even little changes in lifestyle by enough people can have a big impact.

***note...this is just my opinion and no I don't have any facts to back any of it up... so take it for what it's worth

You reprocess it. The way France, Britain, and Germany do. The way we SHOULD be handling it, but since that moron Carter signed an Imperial Fiat. (see Executive Order) banning the reprocessing of said waste, we have to bury it in Yucca mountain! Of course, to be fair, any president could reverse that order, but they haven't.

I'll chime in here also - I'm a plumber and a house rehabber. Ever try to haul a water heater or sheet rock in a Toyota Prius? Some of us drive trucks to make a living.

Actually, no. They did a study on this. Current power plants are vastly underutilized overnight. IIRC, the study determined that if all transportation (or maybe it was all personal vehicles) changed over to electric vehicles charged overnight, something like 73% of the need would be met without building another power plant. Considering how many years it would take to convert over, I'd say there's plenty of time to build a few more power plants for the other 27% or so.

But probably less than the cost to build a new one today. And a lot of that expense is due to rules that were instituted to make nuclear power less likely, not safer, IMHO. Nuclear power has settled down, technology and cost wise. It is safe. With reprocessing, there is an unlimited amount of fuel. Again, some have successfully pushed to have reprocessing in this county outlawed, so they can say there's only a few years of fuel left, and we are all safer for it. Yet the rest of the world is not so stupid. France, in particular, does a LOT of reprocessing. And guess what? No CO2 emissions from nuclear power, and that is our biggest pollution problem today.

Plus, there are now a few "passively safe" reactors available today. Picture a pebble bed reactor, filled with hundreds of thousands of golf ball sized "fuel" pellets, bathed in helium for the heat transfer medium. Terrorists attack- there's no concrete containment vessel! What happens? Do we all scream, run, die horrible deaths? No. The balls may roll around, but the reaction stops, the heat dies down, and cleanup is with a shovel and scoop loader.

And waste? Who's kidding who, with this 10,000 year half life of plutonium example? Do you really think in 100 or 200 years, we won't have a way of further processing the wastes, and retrieving valuable isotopes- or even just making it safer? So build containment that lasts 500 years.

CO2 pollution is a problem. A REAL problem, not an imaginary, scare mongered problem. We should have been building nuke plants fast, and doing away with coal. And later, doing away with natural gas even.

Yep, algae and "whole corn stalk" ethanol would be a big improvement. Using other biomass materials will help. But let's not starve out the world over it. The new processes using microwaves to break out oil from oil shale may well work, and make Canada rich. But even that is not enough, there's still pollution. Solar and indirect solar energy (wind, tidal) will contribute, but never dominate.

It always comes back to nuclear power.

Laptop Shutting Off When On Battery?

Lately my eight year old Dell laptop has been shutting off even when I have a full battery. I have had to keep it plugged up all the time to keep this from happening. Any idea what is causing this? I replaced the battery about three years ago.

A recalibration might be needed. Even if it shows full, the individual cells may have become unbalaced. And the BMS chip in the battery reports false information to the pc.
Try this. Start it up in the bios/uefi and leave it there until the battery dies and it shuts off.
It might just keep running longer than in Windows. Or run for a short while and shut off.
If it's the first case. Probably just needs a balancing. If the latter, the pack might just be dead.
Not throwing stones but perhaps just a cheaply constructed battery with substandard cells. Could be.

Patience. Keep restarting it in bios/uefi until it won't fire up anymore.
Then plug the charger in and let it complete a full charge. And see what happens. If it's better.
Do the same thing one more time. Run it until it dies dead-dead. Then just let it charge, pc shut off.
When charged, it might be better. It might not be.

There are bench jigs that read the actual BMS and override it to let a tech manually monitor and charge the separate packs. They can also reset any "time bombs" in it that cause an otherwise good pack to show bad.
Maybe Santa will be good to me some year.

You might just need a new battery. Maybe the PC power management chip is going. A Dell common thing.
Leaving a laptop plugged in with a full battery is known to reduce the life. Asus for one recommends that you don't leave the charger plugged in all of the time even when shut down. And setting Windows to charge the battery to 85% instead of 100% increases life.
That's all I got.

Starlink Router question

I set up a music server for my brother a few years ago. It's basically a small headless computer but it needs to have a DHCP IP address reserved for it in the router settings. This was easy to do in his DSL router. He's switching to Starlink now and I was wondering if these setting are easily accessible in the Starlink router. I'm pretty sure he will be getting the latest V5 router.

If you can't get into the router to reserve an IP address just don't use DHCP on the device that needs connected and assign it to a specific IP address in the network settings.

They are not. Your best bet is to set up a third-party router, attached to the Starlink for your server, that you can get into, like a Linksys, etc

The Starlink V5 Install Kit I just got comes with the Mini Router. It is pretty limited in what it can do. For example, it can provide only one IP subnet at a time, no Guest Network, but it does support the pass-thru to a third-party Router. You can also split the Wi-Fi into separate 5 GHz & 2.4 GHz SSIDs to help some IoT devices that don't support 5 GHz bands to work.

The larger Starlink Router that still comes with the V4 Kit does support a Guest Network with separate IPv4 Subnet, but it's $120 from Starlink. And it still won't do DHCP Reservations.

If you can restrict the DHCP address space to assign addresses to one end of the subnet (i.e. x.x.x.50+), you can manually assign the IP address on pretty much any operating system. This is a default behavior on several popular routers. As the Router Mini only supports 235 devices, I expect that's already done.

Another option is to use a router that supports PoE to power the antenna. This article discusses that option (under PoE Power heading):

Now that I've had the v5 kit with the Mini Router, it's not as bad as I first thought. Yes, no DHCP reservations, but you can set up multiple SSIDs that have separate IPv4 subnets, and like the big brother, you can select from 192.168.x.0/24 or 10.x.0.0/16 (where "x" is 1-4).

You can also split a subnet and have different SSIDs for the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz channels to handle some IoT devices. I haven't discovered what subnet the 2nd NIC on the router assigns, I'm guessing it's the first subnet.

At least 64 dead in Spanish passenger train collision

Terrible tragedy. You would think that they would have safe guards in place that would prevent something like this from happening. I guess if you are going to ride in a passenger train it might be best to get a car near the rear.
