We'll be moving in a month or two and plan to switch back to satellite from cable. We were an E* subscriber for several years (pre-HD) and we were generally quite happy with the service but have been with cable for 3 years now.

I'm trying to decide which service to go with. I can definitely understand the current frustration from lack of new HD with E*, especially with all the additions coming from D* but I was wondering what your opinions are about how things will look 4-6 months from now? Will E* have closed the gap with the launch of the new sat(s)? Is it worth the hassle of switching to D* or will it be a moot point later this year with the HD offerings having equalized? I've also heard that E*'s hardware is better. Is that true?

Thanks so much in advance! I look forward to hearing your opinions, thoughts and advice!

All depends on what your looking for. The 722 HD-DVR is great, but then I have not been a DTV sub, so I can't speak of theirs.

I will most likely switch to DTV for other reasons though; namely locals in HD, certain sports nets offered by D in HD, that aren't offered in HD on E* or not even offered at all. Plus the option of getting the NFL Ticket and MLB Extra Innings package.

Like I said, it is all what your personal preferences are.

The preferences thing makes sense. I should have probably mentioned... sports (other than the major events, Superbowl, World Series, etc, etc. which should be available on either sat service, right?) aren't a huge concern. The main thing we enjoy are the Discovery channels and related similar ones, BBC America, and films (including classics). If you honestly believe that Dish will be catching up and adding more HD later this year when the new sats are up, I think we'll look at simply going back to them and trying for an upgrade deal.

By the way, just curious, how's the SD quality on Dish right now? Will that change as well with the new sats later this year?

Again, many thanks for the advice and information! :)

If you haven't had DISH for three years you will probably notice a difference in SD, and not for the better. Of course, it doesn't compare to what it was back in the late 90's. In my opinion of course!

In your opinion, was it better or worse back in the late 90's? Is SD still watchable now?

OTOH, when E* converts everything including the SD programming to MPEG-4 then there should be plenty of capacity for maximum PQ on all channels. Will that actually happen is anyone's guess at this point but I believe it will.

Will the total changeover to full MPEG-4 be happening in the near future? Are there any projected dates on this? I'm assuming if I have one of the HD DVR receivers that I'll be able to get the MPEG-4 versions of the SD channels as soon as they are available, is this correct?

On a different but related note, do the HD DVR's automatically show the HD versions of a SD channel if available or are they in entirely different channel areas? For any channel that the HD feed is identical to the SD, that would be an awesome feature. Obviously, this would be the case for something like Food Network HD where the programming is on a completely different schedule than the SD counterpart.

Thanks again. :)

SD quality is great on a SD TV, under the size of 32 inches. SD looks like crap on my 48 Sony Rear Projection HDTV though. So bad, that I am better off running my 722 receiver in single pip mode, and watch a hockey game on smallers screens to get a crisper picture.

My answer to the OPs original question, is that I think Dish will close the gap over the next six months, assuming the birds go up.

I love the 622/722 DVR, and love having external Hard Drive archive support even more.

Based on what you like to watch, I think you'd be happy with Dish.

The answer is ... Kinda.

The DVR does map down the HD channel to the same channel number of its corresponding SD channel. So in the case of National Geographic, you will have two channel 186s in your guide. The HD channel has a big "HD" logo indicating which of the two it is. You can also program the DVR to "prefer" to record HD over SD. So if you have a pass to record a game on ESPN, the DVR will automatically pick ESPN-HD over the regular ESPN.

On your local HD channels, the DVR can also be configured to map down the HD channels to the single/double digit channel numbers. So my NBC affiliates HD channel might be 6321 and its SD ch # is 8321. The DVR would map down the HD channel to say ch 004-00 instead of the SD ch.

So to answer your question, the DVR will automatically pick the HD channel to record from (if configured to do so). The SD channels do remain in the guide, so if you do pick one, the DVR will not automatically send you to the HD equivalent. Considering the HD equiv is adjacent to the SD, this should not be a problem, since you likely picked the SD channel deliberately.

There are only a few reasons why you would do this. Perhaps you want to record a show and use less diskspace, or intend to download it to a pocket dish device which does not support HD.

Thanks for this info. I think I understand what you're saying. Basically, when you're searching through the guide, any channel with a HD equivalent will be adjacent to it's SD counterpart making it easy to choose the HD channel. That would be great and I love that I could have the DVR automatically "prefer" HD recording to SD. On our current cable setup, National Geographic SD is on channel 142 and the HD version is on channel 659! So you *really* have to go to the effort of finding the HD channels (of which there are very few) if you're surfing through the lower SD channels and want to watch a show in HD.
B
Re: current SD quality - I find it quite variable, and sometimes on the same channel. I do most of my watching on 40" and 52" Sony LCD TVs. I watch a lot of Tru TV. Some programs look great in SD, some not so great. Ch 131 (IFC) always seems to look good and I watch movies on that channel a lot since they're commercial free during the movie. I don't know whether E* allocates different BW (bit rates) to SD channels or if the difference is in the originating station. YMMV.

Re: MPEG-4 conversion, look at the other threads on this topic, notably "Eastern Arc". How soon is speculative, but I believe it is inevitable given the ever-increasing demand for content especially HD in a hardware- and BW-starved environment. The ViP HD receivers/DVRs (211, 222, 612, 622, 722, etc.) will receive the M-4 channels now. Eventually the current generation of SD receivers/DVRs will have to be swapped-out. E* (and probably D*) will likely do this regionally vs. all at once. The remaining question is whether or not some of the additional "capacity" made available by the more efficient compression engines will be used to improve SD (and HD !!!) quality vs. using it all for additional content...

Season 2 order already in hand:

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.

I don't know, but I still don't like her walking through the station or the academy with out her shoes. It looks unprofessional and very "hippy like" for someone of her status and I personally don't get off to feet, so there is that. ;)

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Well, the bag can't weigh that much, right? But by law food product packaging must display the actual net weight of the product, i.e., the contents of the container, so by any logic, if not law, a store's stated per-ounce cost should reflect that figure. But since there's not any law regulating shelf statements, a store can say whatever it wants without violating any rules. So I guess the answer is more consumer legislation. Or simply caveat emptor.

I would think that the Vendor/Maker of the product would have a say in it, showing the Correct weight ...
You would think it would be in the contract.

In the 3Q of 2016, Comcast had 21.42 million video subscribers and was the #1 provider, now at 10.39 million and is the #3 Provider, YTTV is #2 ( who also surpassed DirecTV-8 Million and Dish-under 5 Million), Charter/Spectrum is #1.

A few teams got a deal. Was posted yesterday in the Directv update thread
K
https://www.prnewswire.com/news-rel...-louis-blues-regional-channels-302918682.html
DIRECTV today announced a new multi-year distribution agreement with the National Hockey League for Hurricanes Hockey Network, Blue Jackets Hockey Network, Wild+, and Blue Note+ pregame, postgame, and in-game live sports services.

Each of the four channels will be available to DIRECTV streaming and satellite customers who live in each team's NHL-designated home territory and subscribe to Choice and higher packages, and each U-verse customer in those same regions who subscribes to U200 and above.

This agreement also provides distribution rights to each NHL team to all of DIRECTV FOR BUSINESS's thousands of sports bars, restaurants, fitness clubs, and other commercial venues located within each team's respective region.

DIRECTV has recently obtained regional or local rights to provide 76 of the 81 U.S.-based NHL, NBA, or MLB franchises to their local fans, including multi-year agreements for 23 U.S.-based hockey teams.

Now let's get the NBA game channels going.
K
I'm trying to figure out the math that got them to 76 of 81 US based teams:
DIRECTV has recently obtained regional or local rights to provide 76 of the 81 U.S.-based NHL, NBA, or MLB franchises to their local fans, including multi-year agreements for 23 U.S.-based hockey teams.
77 Phillies
78 76ers
79 Flyers (Next year will mark 30 years since DTV last had local Philly sports after the demise of SportsChannel Philly, at this point the lack of NBCS Philly is not a dealbreaker for most of their remaining PA, Southern NJ and Delaware customers)
80 Stars -- Not listed in the NHL release as KDFI/KDFW only has 17 simulcasts the rest are Prime only
The lack of Flyers and Stars would match the 23 of 25 US based NHL teams.

81 Ducks? -- KCOP is listed in the NHL release, but between them and KTTV only 65/77 games will be available, the other 12 will be Prime only, and there's no OTA option at all for viewers in the Santa Barbara or San Diego DMAs
Unlike the 4 NHL distributed teams (Blues, Blue Jackets, Hurricanes, Wild), the Stars and Ducks are available at no additional cost for Prime subscribers

In the NHL release they are counting the LIL coverage of OTA teams for "local rights", even if all of the outer markets aren't available (i.e. Golden Knights and Mammoth on The Spot Idaho subchannels, the Panthers on Laff Fort Myers and Ducks outside of the LA DMA), so at least for the home markets they have the following OTA NBA teams:
Heat - WPLG/10 Miami and WTCN-CD/43 West Palm Beach -- slate up on channel 654, but I doubt they are going to add a Heat feed just for Fort Myers unless the Heat make it available cheaply, they didn't even do it for the Panthers who won the Stanley Cup in 2024 and 2025
Hornets - WAXN/64 Charlotte, WMYV/48 Greensboro, WRDC/28 Raleigh and the satellite only WZBJ/24 Roanoke -- slate up on channel 648 for the rest of the Carolinas
Magic - WRDQ/27 Orlando and WMOR/32 Tampa -- slate up on channel 656 for the non-carried subchannel markets Jacksonville, Gainesville, Panama City and Tallahassee along with the Florida portions of the Mobile-Pensacola DMA who doesn't have any OTA carriage.
Hawks - WANF/46 Atlanta -- slate up on channel 646 for the rest of Georgia and Alabama
Bucks - WVTV-D2/24 Milwaukee and the satellite only WISC-D2/14 Madison -- slate up on channel 669 for the rest of Wisconsin
Suns - KAZF/32 Phoenix -- Nothing for Tucson, Yuma or New Mexico
Jazz - KJZZ/14 Salt Lake City -- Nothing for the areas of Eastern Washington, Eastern Oregon, Idaho and Montana that used to get it on an alternate feed of Root Northwest
Pistons - WMYD/20 Detroit and WJMN/3 Marquette -- Also available outside of Detroit on 663-2
Thunder - KSBI/52 OKC and KQCW/19 Tulsa -- Also available on 675
Mavs - KFAA/29 Dallas -- Also available outside of Dallas on 676-8
Blazers - KUNP/47 Portland and KSTW/11 Seattle -- Also available outside of Portland on 688-1

I was reading this article

That said this-
Last summer, for the first time, streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime claimed the largest share of the television viewing audience, surpassing both cable and broadcast TV. Streaming captured 34.8 percent of July viewers, according to Nielsen data, compared to 34.4 percent for cable and 21.6 percent for broadcast.

And then, sometime in the second half of 2022, cord-cutters became the majority. The share of cable and satellite television subscribers dipped to 48 percent, according to a report from Samba TV, a television technology company.

Now I do not consider those with YTTV and the likes, Cord Cutters, but they still do not have Traditional Cable/Satellite delivered Live TV, so I decided to do the math.

There are, now, 129 Million Households in the United States.

In 2015, there were 100 Million Cable/Sat Subscribers , no streaming Live TV Service.

Today, there are 66 Million Live TV subscribers, including Cable, Satellite and Streaming.

Roughly, Streaming Live TV has 14 Million subs including all of them.

So that means, Cable/Satellite now has, roughly, 51 Million Households

So in just 8 years, lost 49% of their subscribers and by the end of this year, expected sub count to be, roughly, 45 million households.

That means a total loss of 55% since 2015 at the end of 2023.

But out of 129 Million households, 45 million will mean only 35% will get Cable/Satellite Delivered Live TV by the end of 2023.

Imagine what 2024 will be like.

Nobody is "happy" or "sad" about this. Simply posting data in an non-editorialized way has nothing to do with anyone's feelings.

The data on the streaming side is immensely accurate, I'm guessing to the millisecond. Plus most people likely have not turned off data sharing and thus they are grabbing a huge swath of data. Much more accurate than cable which relies on a smaller sample size and probably not to the second.

In either case, nobody is getting "double counted" because it's usage based. If I watch 100 minutes of content and 30 minutes is on Youtube and 20 minutes on Disney and 50 minutes on YTTV, it's going to show up as 30%, 20%, 50% slices of my personal pie respectively.

Neilson does the Broadcast/Cable ...
Nielsen does. If you go into the settings of any of your streaming accounts, you can turn off the option to share to usage data with their third party measuring service - Nielsen.

I have turned some off, not others ...

I set up a music server for my brother a few years ago. It's basically a small headless computer but it needs to have a DHCP IP address reserved for it in the router settings. This was easy to do in his DSL router. He's switching to Starlink now and I was wondering if these setting are easily accessible in the Starlink router. I'm pretty sure he will be getting the latest V5 router.

If you can't get into the router to reserve an IP address just don't use DHCP on the device that needs connected and assign it to a specific IP address in the network settings.

IS Amiko MIRA 3 any good ???
Can you recommend the best to cover all bases. NO BEEPS on certain channels 101w (NEWSMAX ,NEWS NATION), a clock that keeps working STEADY for timed recording ,solid unit with good lifespan. My Amiko died AND my Linkbox has NO Favorites Button and BEEPS on many channels. Picking up 105 west with a NEW SHED IN THE Way with 6 foot Cband ..95 percent quality ...unbelievable.

Have you tried a new power brick on your Amiko? It's slim pickings out there anymore. The FTA market in the US has pretty much been abandoned.

This would likely be your best bet, and Rick is a good seller. I've never had any issues with him:
