Ok... let me first apologize for my first two postings being questions (sometimes really just a statement) that may stir the pot, but the real reason people participate in forums like this is get information about the issues they deem as important.

Yesterday I mentioned the picture quality, but the other question/statement that hopefully SOMEONE here knows about is: what will be Dish Networks stance on the anticopy bit (broadcast flag) and our DVRs? If you don't know what I'm talking about go here and study up on it... its nasty.

I'm worried that Dish Network will retrofit their existing DVR's with firmware that honors the broadcast flag, and then we will be at the mercy of the broadcasters again (i.e. watching on THEIR schedule instead of ours). I just don't wan't some big corporation telling me what I can record and what I can't record, and I DEFINITELY don't like being treated like a criminal. This is also the reason why they'll pry my big screen analog television from my cold dead fingers. As long as I've got that analog television, I can always capture even if they don't want me to.

Again.. sorry for the rants and/or questions that are somewhat flamebait, but its what is important to me. If someone knows how this might turn out.. offer some insight and I promise I'll play nice from now on unless someone mentions these two topics again . :D

Ken F. is technically right, but....

Ken- you did such a nice job of explaining the technical aspects of the BF that I wouldn't be suprised if you were in the "industry" :). BUUUUUUUT, you were a bit disingenous in some areas.

First, it is important to tell everybody concerned about this issue that the BF is still in what the FCC calls a "proposal" stage - that is, the exact rule has not been finalized and they are still soliciting comments about how the BF will be implemented. That means that, despite the stated intentions to not require the BF in certain scenarios, that can, and indeed probably will, change after they are paid off....errrr, lobbied by the "content industry". So, in short, no one, including the FCC, even knows what the final implementation of the BF will be like.

Second, your statement that the FCC has expressly disclaimed ever implementing the "Copy Never" flag is true only for "standard" OTA (i.e. free TV) broadcasts. The FCC clearly states in the BF proposal that this option can indeed by implemented/imposed by MCVD's (satellite and cable oeprators). Since, almost 90% of U.S. households (I believe that the exact number is 87.5%) get their TV from a "pay source", that means that a whole boatload of people could/will be denied their fair use rights for content they have legally "purchased" (via their subscription fee).

Third, your explantion of the stated "prevention of internet distribution of content" is correct, as far as it goes. But, no where in the BF proposal does it state how a device can be "hooked" to the internet, or what constitutes an "internet capable" device. I can (and do) hook my 510 to my home PC via composite cables and my PC is connected to the internet. Does that mean my 510 is "hooked" to the internet? To the MPAA, it damn sure does. The problem with your pat statement that "standalone devices will not be affected by the BF" is that there is absolutely no evidence of that. Without laying out details and defintions, nobody can know how the final BF implementation will run. In fact, the FCC (Powell in particular)has already publicly acknowledged that cable and satellite operators will most likely "Copy Never" flag PPV content, which means that none of us will be able to record that PPV that we PAID for. Extending the MPAA's stated intention to prevent the transfer of content (both digitally and by analog means) then there is every reason to believe that this "copy protection" could indeed be extended to standalone devices (yes, even to the internal HD of a DVR) by the time that the BF actually goes into effeect in June 2005. As I'm sure that you know, the BF is simply a bit in the digital TV (OTA, sat or cable) bitstream - this bit will by checked for its setting in every hardware device that "touches" the bitstream (including the TV itself). It would be a trivial matter to check the BF bit BEFORE (probalby in the buffering stage) the DVR allows it to go the hard drive.

Fourth, since you sound familiar with the 5C/HDCP (wich predates the BF proposal) system, then you probalby realize that the FCC-mandated BF proposal is based very much along the lines of the 5C system (in fact, you could say that it was the 5C system/folks that "inspired" the FCC). And the 5C system is designed to lock the bitstream down at every level that it touches. to esnure compliance. This is what the original CPWG (Copy Protection Working Group - Hollywood's special task force that originally designed the BF and bribed the FCC to implement) BF proposal mandated - a complete "strip search" of the bitstream at every level to scour out "noncomplying" devices. In short, the final impelementaion of the BF will probalby be closer to its "5C-like" original intention rather than the more "public friendly" version proposed by the FCC.

Finally, please do not take this post as a flame or a personal attack; actually, I commend you b/c you sound as if you have actually read the BF proposal, which many commentors on this issue have not. I just want to make sure that everybody who cares about this issue understands that the final implications of the BF proposal are not known at this time and that your rather rosy forecast of a world where "Big Content" loves the American people and generously decides to "allow" us our complete and unfettered fair use rights is at best, wildly optimistic and at worst, deliberately deceiving. Thanks for reading.

Absolutely; read my post right above yours. In fact, the Germans thought preventing duplicate keys made Enigma "unbreakable"; but it turned out to be the weakness that enabled Bletchley Park to crack it, because it made the keys less than 100% random.
Big Bob
RBBrittain said:
But computing power increases almost daily, and with the Internet and distributed computing, you can get millions of people involved very easily.

Remember: In WWII, the Germans had encryption (Enigma); we had linguistic code (the Navajo Code Talkers). The Allies cracked Enigma at Bletchley Park; but the Axis never knew they needed Navajos to crack the Allied code, so it was NEVER cracked. So history proves NightRyder is right...

For every increase in computing power, just add a few more bits to the key. For every additional person working together to crack a key, just add a few more bits. You will run out of computing power and people before I run out of bits.

Of course, once all those bits have been added and the key becomes long enough, consumer products will not have the power to use the key. So a trade off must be made. Such a trade off is why

NightRyder said:

There will always be more available computer power and people than any consumer device could handle.

To most properly state this,
Anything encrypted has a key. Any consumer device with a key can be cracked.

BTW,
It really isn't that easy to get Millions to work together. Hundreds, yes. Thousands, a bit harder. Millions, definitely not easy. (And please don't use SETI @ home as an example. That was not easy to acomplish.)
RBBrittain
My WWII example was NOT a consumer device; it was military encryption. Enigma may not have been as strong as 128-bit SSL, but then Alan Turing and the others at Bletchley Park didn't have PCs on their desk to crack it either. (Though one of the best candidates for "first computer" was one of the machines developed at Bletchley Park to help crack Enigma.)

My point was, as the computing power for MAKING the keys grows, so does the computing power for CRACKING them. Yes, it may take a very long time to hack the key--but that's just for "brute force" hacking, that is, trying every possible combination until it works. All you have to do is find the ONE correct key, and you're in; it may take millions of years, but it could just as easily be ONE TRY. And if you find a weakness (such as Enigma's lack of repeat keys), that can reduce the time exponentially.

Sorry, but SETI@home is a GOOD example. (So was the original Napster.) Perhaps it took a lot of brains to make it in the first place; but once that genius is reduced to a file and spread out over the Net, it becomes very easy. Just like cracking a key: Once one person cracks it and publishes the solution (like the kid in Norway who wrote DeCSS), "unbreakable" code becomes just a paperweight.

Of course, part of what you say is true: 128-bit SSL is crackable; but it works for e-commerce and online banking, because it takes so much time and equipment to hack that it's much easier and cheaper to buy lots of credit card numbers from a dumpster-diver than to hack your online session to get just one. (Even the hackers have easier means of attack, like phishing, or just hacking into the site itself.) But when the encrypted file is the latest Hollywood blockbuster instead, the social engineering aspect is more like military communications than online banking...

I know HipKat said that they were working on conversions but we got the official news yesterday right from Dish that starting next month all DMA's will be on the western arc, and all customers will be assigned to that. That's gonna mean a lot of customers around here aren't gonna get Dish unless there are exceptions. Too many mountains and trees.

I don't know why DISH doesn't just start a streaming version of DISH and then if you can't see the western arc you go with streaming versions and then they could keep customers if they had good internet speeds. I mean Sling TV could be changed to Streaming DISH TV if they wanted since both companies are under Echostar. Then you would still be able to use your ota antenna with Air TV devices like I do with Air TV Anywhere with 4 ota tuners.

And the same reason why DISH removing satellite 118 for international channels is a bad idea as at least in my case, TVB Jade World costs $29.99/month and depends on a internet connection for the signal transport to the DISH Hopper 3 + Hopper Plus to stream the channel which makes it unavailable on DISH Anywhere and also I am providing the transport pipe at my own expense when it was supposed to be a dedicated connection via satellite between DISH and the DISH equipment.

If you ponied up for an iPhone Duo, keep it away from anything other than your soft, fleshy fingertips. No fingernails, no dust, sand, dirt, or other particulate matter. And don't bend it more than it needs to. Zack has destroyed $2,000 of Apple hardware to get those views, which should cover his expenses.

IFixIt has published their Teardown and they had some positive things to say about the iPhone Duo. It still showed some dust ingress into the hinge assembly but seemed otherwise well-sealed.

But with a considerable number of reports of the main screen dying with similar failures, AppleCare+ should be a no-brainer for this phone.

I'm thinking of switching to DirecTV and wanted to know what equipment I should be asking for.

I'm wanting wired satellite due to that fact that I live in the sticks and there is no reliable, decent speed internet for streaming available.

What would be the correct equipment for three 4K tvs in the house?

If they are requiring all clients on a new HS17 install to be wireless, that is not a technical requirement. It saves their techs from having to pull coax all over the house. It makes installations cheaper.

The DirecTV order entry work flow doesn't allow wired clients with an HS17. Does that clear it up for you?
Yet the C61k (4k unit) was wired only ?
That was the only unit available for the HS17 if you wanted 4K

How does that work ?

It's not a poor design when you factor in that it has a Wireless Video Bridge built-in. It's shaped like a router or gateway for a reason.

We're a DirecTV retailer and there is no where in the order entry flow to have wired clients with an HS17. I heard that when it's ordered on the website the installer shows up with only HS17's and wireless clients. I don't know how reliable that info is as it came from a dubious source but it makes sense.

Well, different strokes and all that. I've had that HS17 sitting quietly doing its job for almost a decade. As I mentioned earlier, at one point I had two wired and two wireless receivers. Now, just one C61K.

Even before that I had a HR44 with an HR24 and two wireless minis. Back then, which was years ago, I would have agreed with the need for individual receivers, but at this point, I stream almost everything, including shows I used to record.

It'll be moot soon enough anyway. Wired receivers/DVRs are going the way of the POTS landline. You can't stop progress.

The playoff told us rankings are pointless. Lesser ranked teams were winning playoff games. Ranking the top 24? Rank it the same way as normal. It'll consist of at least four or five of each cartel's teams, other conference winners. The field will be fine, the sorting will be problematic and arbitrary, but in the end does it matter?

It'll matter when OSU or Alabama have to face a decent upstart squad due to being ranked midway in the listing, or goodness help us, each other. But thanks to arbitrary rankings, that should be easily avoided by design. Then the cartels will need to fix the rankings a bit so the top dogs can have a bye or three to help prevent those untimely eliminations from the playoff.

As for meeting each other, you say they automatically avoid ... not really, if I recall, when Ohio State won in 2 years ago, they had the toughest route to win it all .... they played Tennessee, then it was the #1 team Oregon, in round 2 then Texas in round 3 then Notre Dame in the Finals .... thats hardly avoiding the tough match ups.

Personally, I don't want to see 42- 10 blowouts in the first 2 rounds ....

Not sure where you found lesser teams beating higher ranked teams ... (outside of the Top teams, which any could beat each other (1-8).

Which in my opinion is where the Playoffs should be teams 1-8 .
Team number 64 has ZERO chance to win 4-5 games against top teams.

Btw, whens the last time a (in basketball) 32-64 ranked team WON it all, or even got to the Final 2 ?????

I'll wait.
Y
You mean other than Miami being in the final last year... and Indiana being the only bye team to win a game?
Ronnie-
I see alot saying nobody is good because several have a loss or two. I disagree. I think more teams are good now, and even.

Its made for some more competitive games imo.
Ronnie-

The NIL and tranfer portal definitely need some work, or guidelines, but it has evened stuff out somewhat.

Even the expanded playoff. While it does make a single regular season game less relevant in the overall picture, its added a different level of interest imo. Losing a game, or two even, doesnt mean your season is over. The teams still have ALOT to play for.

I am not as against this (as a whole that still needs tweaking) as I thought I would be. More competitive football, I think that is a good thing.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....
