Use LCD monitor as TV or how to find cheap Non-HD LCD TVs?

I have a VIP722 and I have shared the TV2 output to all my rooms except for my main TV which is HD.

I'm looking for the most frugal way to find 15"-20" LCD TVs for these rooms. They don't need to be HD and they can have a 4:3 ratio, since the VIP722 outputs TV2 in 480i.

I've thought about using older LCD monitors, but since they don't generally have a tuner and speakers I'd have to buy some stand alone device to tune to the modulated channel and some external speakers.

Anyone know a good source for non-HD 4:3 LCD analog TVs before they are totally phased out? I've been looking on ebay but 15" LCDs TVs are around $200-$250.

Why are LCD monitors so much cheaper than TVs? It can't just be because of the tuner and speakers.

Aside from the costs of the analog tuner and whatever it takes to convert analog to digital you have economies of scale. Far more LCD monitors are sold as monitors than as TVs and all those old sets were 640x480, a resolution no one wants on a computer anymore.

Ya no company is going to make a large low res screen anymore. I did a quick search for new EDTV and the pickin's are slim. Perhaps there are used ones floating around in yr area. I had forgotten about EDTV.

jenny, why do the extra TVs need to be LCDs? can they be regular CRTs? i have found that you can find some really good deals on CRT TVs on craigslist (especially if you leave near a college :). of course it depends on what area you live in, but there are some very good deals to be found.

The problem with trying to substitute a computer monitor is that if you have one that can accept the scan rates of video with composite or S-VHS inputs, it will likely cost you as much as a TV.

But the standard 640x480 scan rate works for TV too, just that you need a transcoder to convert the TV signal to VGA, of course separate speakers are needed for audio. So you will probably not save much with an LCD monitor.

But as long as you are looking at a flat panel LCD TV, the 16x9 HD sets will fit your needs too because on TV2 of your 622 receiver you can select 16x9 screen format, and all HD channels will fill your screen perfectly only that the resolution is in SD not HD. All the SD channels will have bars on the two sides but you can still use zoom mode to fill the screen.

Price Increase on Owned Equipment?

Did anyone have a price increase today on their equipment? I own my VIP211k's, and they have been $5.00. My bill that I received last week shows the "add-ons" as being $5.00. However, I just logged into my Dish account, and my "add-ons" are now $10.00. Did the additional receivers go up by $5.00 recently?

As I mentioned, my last bill shows $5.00 and under the notes, nothing is mentioned about a price increase.

I just got notice of my July bill, going up by over $60.
Probably my 2 year just lapsed.

Sent an email to my dish contact. Hopefully he can get it back down.
I'd like to stay with dish mostly because it's easy to use for my tech challenged wife, but also for some of the cool features, like PIP and MultiView.

I also have access to YouTube TV through a family plan, which I use sometimes.
That could be the fallback if the price can't get down to my current level, although training my wife to use that may be too much to ask. 😬

My late wife had early onset dementia, she was easily able to figure out YTTV.

To put it in perspective.... She can't figure out how to connect to Wi-Fi on her iPhone unless I help her. This is for saved profiles! 🤦‍♂️

She will look at the cellular signal display on the phone...."See... I only have one bar on Wi-Fi!"
Me: Honey that's not Wi-Fi, that's your cellular connection. (Shows her how to connect, and look at the Wi-Fi display....)

A few hours later....

My iPhone auto joins my home wifi whenever I am in the vicinity. It remembers other wifis that I have joined in the past and auto joins them as well. It is very easy to set up.

Have you had her checked for dementia by chance? Or is this just typical woman tech challenged. My wife is tech challenged like a mother. I can show her how to use something and she will yell at me across the house my phone won't connect to the wifi! Show her again and the same thing the very next day. My aunt is 11 years older than me and she is also tech challenged. I hated getting phone calls from out of state from her saying my computer is messed up what do I do? I said stop using one. So she bought an expensive lap top and still can't figure out how to use it. Some people you can't help. You just have to be their ongoing tech support. :cool:

my android phone auto connects to my wifi weather at home or out and about.. as long as my passwords programed into it.. same as with all of my devices!!!

Multi view comes to Hopper Plus and snowy 4 Receivers!

My Joey 4 is installed on a bedroom tv.

The diamond buttons had been reset.

I thought this was unusual.

I had to reprogram the double diamond button for PIP which I watch.

No problem.

PIP feature on the Joey 4 had been used to watch two channels at once which I thought was the limitation being only two channels vs.Hopper 3's multi-view four channels.


This time when I selected the PIP feature I noticed an option for Multi-View?


Could this be?


Yes it could.

This software update does this.

Multi-view PIP (4 channels) Is Now Available on Joey 4.

This is freaking awesome and very surprising!!!

Very wonderful for me.

Unfortunately do to NDA's I can't discuss beta features until they are released to the public. But lets just say the DISH team is doing some amazing work. :)

Just ordered two Wireless Joey 4s to replace my 4KJs. Was offered a no-contract or a 12-month contract with a $10.00 reduced monthly bill, no activation fee, and free shipping. They are sending out an installer even though I asked to do it myself. Very pleased with the Dish rep I worked with.

Received this e-mail 3 days ago... At the bottom, it says limited to one Multi-view session per household. How does it work if someone had Hopper 3, Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus, Wired Joey 4 and a Wireless Joey 4 for example? Can they all do Multi-view session at the same time?

I have all them there models. I know for sure they all have multi-view, but I have not tried them all out at the same time. Wife has the H3+ in use right now. I will try it out tomorrow & report back.

Hopper 3 and green bar

Recently had a Hopper 3 installed and noticed that I have a green bar at the top of my screen, also occasionally a thin green line on the right side. I have tried switching hdmi ports on the tv as well as different cables. My only thought is that it is the age of the TV. Thoughts and suggestions?

Adding a bit of detail - start with DEFAULTS by pressing the pause/play button.
If that does not work try zooming out with the left arrow until the green lines are off the screen.

Tried the Adjust Screen settings and the green bar was still present. Did have a random day when the green bar was gone, but it came back. Did look at the TV setting and found I could stretch the screen a little where the green bar was gone, but it does cut off things across the edges of the picture slightly. Likely will start shopping for a new TV as mine is close to 20 years old and the Dis Remote doesn't seem to like the TV.

Yeah, 20 years is a good time for retirement. You can get a nice new 4K/HDR TV for a very reasonable price even for large ones.

I suggest you get an LG Oled 4k TV. You will love the picture on this thing from all angles in the room. The picture is the best I've seen ever. I have the B 3 series 55 inch TV and it was on sale in the fall of 2024 for like $749.00 - because they sell off their older models when they reach end of year.

I even bought one for my parents. They had a huge living room and sit at the weirdest angles with their furniture and the viewing angle was a problem using just about any TV we tried, but not with the LG Oled Tv. They love the picture. Walmart sells them and so does Amazon.

??? I'm confused. FireTV and Roku are competing devices. They both do the same thing in slightly different ways. Why do you have them connected together? I have an Apple TV, a Roku, and a Firestick. They each connect to my Denon AVR via HDMI. I useeach of them to watch apps. Some apps work better depending on the device.

It was a cheap TV on sale. I hate the Android/Fire interface so I just connected my Roku to it. That's why I would prefer to just buy "dumb TV's" and use my own streamer.

i agree buy dumb t'v's and buy our own streaming boxes!!! buy a dumb t'v' would cost more since they can't collect your data :mad:.

Well, picture quality can be subjective. I was referring to the high-end OLEDs, RGB mini-LEDs, etc. which have a measurably excellent picture. You cannot get those in a dumb version aside from some commercial models which cost a lot more.
