Hello, I am new to the forums but I have been reading for awhile now. I would like to share my experience and maybe get some advice from you guys. I have been trying to get HD services from Directv now for a month. I live in St. Louis and our local installer is Premier Communications. So, two installers have been out. I have a two story house and they told me that the roof was my only option. Of course, neither installer had a big enough ladder. I called Directv to complain. The lady was very helpful, she set everything up and even called Premier with me on the line to confirm that the installer would bring a large ladder with him. I'm scheduled for an install next Monday.

I am still very nervous about the whole thing. I have a flat roof and I just feel that they will find some other excuse not to install anything. What would you all recommend I do to ensure that I get installed on Monday?

Thanks for the help!!!!

Without seeing the house its hard to tell wether they would have had the right ladder or not, anyone that installs knows that theres a diference between a two story and a two story with a raised floor plan and half a basement below the ground and a raised ceiling plan on each floor. Theres also a diference between a flat roof and a flat roof thats actually a modest sloping roof.

All of that said I have noticed that more and more installers are going out with a simple step ladder and a 16 - 20ft ladder and fewer are going out with a 28ft ladder and a 40ft ladder, when I was installing I had for the longest time a step ladder, 16ft ladder, and a 28ft ladder and sometimes had a 40ft ladder on there as well as the others.

I am scratching my head over this ladder thing. At our company, a 28 ft ladder or the ability to purchase one it is a pre requisite for employment. No 28 footer, look elsewhere for work. I use a stabilizer. Best pruchase of an accessory I have ever made....40 footer is a bulky and tough to handle ladder. We use two men on that detail.. Cust pays for the extra guy if there are other location options.

Thanks for the help all, I really think I will try this one myself. I am fairly knowledgeable from reading up on all of this. I like to have a good idea of how things work especially pertaining to electronics and what not. I might give this a try. Any tips for a self installation, any tricks of the trade I should be aware of?

Brace the mast and make sure that it is perfectly plumb. In addition, when you use your compass and inclinometer to verify your window; you will need a 30 degree window (5 to the left of the 101 sat which is where your coordinates will point you to, and 25 to the right to account for tree growth and such). In addition, you will need a 10 degree elevation window +/- 5 degrees of the setting for the same reason.

Excuse my ignorance as I think I may have been mistaken. When I had Directv previously, I believe I just had a dual lnb 18" round dish. That dish was installed by a pro in Jan. 2006. The other info is correct, it is still mounted to the side of the brick house about 8-9ft. up. Will I still be able to use the pole adapter to install the ka/ku dish to the side of the house or will I have to just put it on the roof? It's not a big deal either way, I just want to be sure I do everything right.

The pole adapter would be fine, if you have enough clearance for the new dish. WE've done many of them.

Not sure what your confused about but if its the placement of the ladders its easy to explain for all four of them. Step ladder and 16ft in the back of the van, 28ft and 40ft on the roof racks, dish used to require two guys set it up but when the stack rankings came into effect in 06 that went out the window as nobody had the time to help each other out.

My house has half the basement above ground as well as high ceilings (about 12ft.). I am also unaware about if the roof is truly flat having never been up there myself. If I had to guess I would say that it has a small grade from front to back. It can't be a big slope, the front is probably about a foot or two higher than the back. I don't know for sure. Would that adapter work even to mount the dish on the wall? If I could receive a signal with the 3lnb dish, could I get the HD signals in that same location?
Ok so you have what could really be seen as a near 3 story house with half the basement above ground and the raised ceilings. From the sounds of it you have a gradual sloped roof probably a variation of a Wright design so a non pen roof mount is not advised becuase if water gets underneath and freezes it could slide with a partial thaw.

It shouldn't be a problem with the extra room. I also should mention that the house is brick. Would that make any difference. I just want to make sure that if I were to purchase the mount that it would work properly and that the installer that comes out would know what it is and actually attempt to use it.
Brick is an installers friend most of the time unless its the hardened brick that you find on homes built over the last 15 years or so, majour pain in the back side to drill into.

Tapcons are approved now?
They were always approved for use, it was the lag shields that were discontinued for a while and then brought back. They were taken away because guys would use them in mortar mounts to hold the dish mast inplace and within a day to a month or so the mounts would pull out and the mortar would be damaged.

heck yeah....They hold great as long as they are in the brick/block and not in the mortar..actualy they hold pretty darn good in the mortar too.
Mortar mounting is not allowed by dish, mortar crumbles to easy and its an autofail on a QA inspection. I stand behind dish on this one because I've seen way to many homes that werent even 80 years old where the mortar was falling out from between the bricks and I fixed more mortar mounts than I cared for. If your going to use tapcons then always put them into the brick.

Edit: let me clarify that tapcons and the lag shields I'm talking about was during my employment with dish network, I am not familiar with the practices of directv as there seems to be varying diferences between all of its subs and rsps and retailers.

Well, I have the dish and receiver. I am awaiting the adapter, expecting that today (hopefully!!) and then I can get this show on the road. Once I have everything installed and am ready to activate, will Directv require a pro come out to look things over before activation or do I just have to call them and give them the info?

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

The post read: "currently available to streaming customers with Geminis and Roku, and coming soon to Android TV, Fire TV, Vizio, LG, Apple TV and Tizen". It didn't mention the Air. I suppose when it said Geminis it meant both but I had no way of knowing that.

They were high-end specialty, somewhat buggy and the 612/622/722 just overwhelmed it in popularity.

I have to think maybe more people dont keep track of the monthly XM bill. Every time i renew i put a reminder on my calendar week before its time to renew. My wife told me the other day not to renew her and then i told her you are not going to be able to listen to XM at home. Then she changed her mind...!!

I get an e-mail every month reminding me that X amount will be charged to my credit card. If I see it go up I get on chat or pick up the phone. But I also remember that my year is up in December.

The A.I. agent appears to be better than in the past. It got to the acceptable price quicker than previous years, no human operator involved. $5/mo and I still have over $50 in SiriusXM credit from my FordPartner benefits.

Has anyone noticed an FF stutter with 713? I used to be able to hit FF a few times and skip smoothly. After 713 (maybe 712), when I skip forward, there is a definite stutter for as many times as I have pressed FF.

Can anyone check on this and report back? Recorded programs and then press skip forward a few times to see if it's smooth? Normally, it just jumps to the right place after the skips.

My wife mentioned that her remote is acting strange this morning. She hit FF and it went to 15x FF.

Last night it was about $4.17 gas, $6,19 diesel.

On the West Coast, a 40-cent differential is common. It used to be 30 cents before the prices rose above $3.

A "full dollar more" sounds like it may be boat gas (non-alcoholic), which is a whole different discussion.

Ok, I'm bored .... actually - to be more precise - I'm bored of eating the same rotation of 9 or 10 meals that are currently my "go-to" meals. My wife works the long hours - I work from home as and when i feel like it ... which means i generally do most of the cooking ... and so by default - i also make out the shopping list ...

We cook at home 5 or even 6 nights a week - but we always seem to fall back on the same old tried and tested "quick and easy but tastes ok" meals. Week in week out.

Pot Roast - mash and Peas.
Spaghetti
Chicken Pasta in cheese sauce.
Curry & rice
(these are some of mine)

Now it's not that I'm not adventurous in the kitchen ... I'll try anything once or twice ... but we all do it. Unless your name is Martha Stewart or Rachel Ray .. we all eventually fall back on our 8-10 favorite "meals"

So i thought - if we shared some of our own go-to meals with each other ... we might be able to add a few "new" ones to our own arsenal of meals.

So again - I ask you ...

What's for dinner tonight ?

Please give me something new to add to my rotation ... its our weekly shop tomorrow - so i want to pull together a few idea's and try and eat a meal each day next week that I've never had before .. or at least something that is not on my current "go-to" meal plan.

What meal do you always seem to fall back on in your house ? Maybe its something that I've never tried or not had in a while. I need inspiration !! I've got a blank shopping list in front of me - and nothing sounds good .. HELP !

Smoked some salmon on the grill while enjoying some Blue Moon beer. Kinda cool tonight so I fired up the heaters. Here in FL, we fire up heaters once the temps get below 60 :cool As for the salmon, I seared them first, then flipped them off to the side not over the coals and brushed on some lemon pepper marinade followed by some salmon seasoning. Threw some hickory chips on the coals and then closed the vents to about 10% airflow. Yum.

The number-one US state for EV growth, according to the June 22 Yardi report?
Oklahoma.

:eek

It has no ZEV mandates and "minimal" incentives, Yardi says, but also has cheap electricity, high multi-car household rates (so, for example, a non-Lightning Ford F-150 pulls their trailers), and a consumer base willing to switch.

Never realized that Tesla is losing to BYD at manufacturing too, which IMO is Tesla's biggest accomplishment and area of innovation. Nice writeup about the state of play and how we got here though. I have no faith that we're moving any productive direction though sadly, most changes and efforts feel reactionary rather than rooted in making use of the time being bought by tariffs, with few exceptions.

So: how are the cars so cheap, and what is being cut to get there? The best public accounting comes from the Rhodium Group, which compared BYD, Geely, and Leapmotor against Tesla's Chinese operation, a fair comparison because it removes labor costs and shipping from the equation entirely. Their estimate is that BYD builds a car for about $4,700 less than Tesla builds a Model 3 in Shanghai, roughly 15 percent of the Model 3's price. The breakdown is the interesting part. Direct government grants account for about $292 per vehicle, which is 5 percent of the gap. The biggest single factor is vertical integration: BYD makes about 80 percent of its top-tier components in-house, against 37 percent for Tesla, and that eliminates roughly $2,369 per vehicle in supplier markups. Lower overhead, meaning cheaper engineering talent and administrative cost spread across enormous volume, accounts for another $1,719. And BYD pays its suppliers on 155-day terms, against Tesla's 60, which is worth about $214 per car in float. When people say the Chinese advantage is subsidies, the per-vehicle number says otherwise. When people say it is slave wages, the Tesla Shanghai comparison says otherwise too. The advantage is mostly that BYD decided, twenty years ago, to make its own batteries, its own motors, its own power electronics, and its own semiconductors, and Western automakers decided the opposite.
harshness
The EV company to watch out for is SAIC. They seem likely to take over Government Motors at some point.

GM originally struck a JV deal with SAIC to gain access to China. Now SAIC has taken China back with the substantial library of technology GM shared and they're looking to export to Mexico, South America, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific.
