I have DirecTv at my house in Florida and my parents have it at their house in metro Chicago. Both of us have HR10-250s (2 each) and HD sets. I keep getting phone calls from DirecTv telling me that I am going to have to replace my HR10 if I want to keep DirecTv. At my house in Florida, I do not have a choice right now (although I have called BrightHouse to see if they will be bringing service to my area any time soon).

I have been very frustrated with DirecTv for allowing their TiVo products to stagnate. Now that DirecTv is no longer owned by New Corp, is there any chance they will fix this?

Quite a few of my friends have switched to HD TiVo boxes and either cable or FiOS. I got my Parents an HD TiVo box and am letting them try that instead of DirecTv. They had RCN for internet (20Mb/s down, 2 Mb/s up) and when I called I discovered that they would save $10 a month by adding a cable card and cable service.

My first impressions are very favorable (I am visiting them for the next week). The signal appears much less compressed than my DirecTv, but more importantly I really love some of the TiVo features, like swivel search. I am going to give them two more weeks to decide if they care enough about getting the west coast feeds (grandfathered) for recording Cold Case Files[\i] during football season, or if they will just drop DirecTv altogether.

Right now, I am keeping my HR10-250. As long as I can still get HBOHD, SHOHD and Universal HD, I will keep DirecTv. If they turn off my TiVo, I will turn them off and just get some HD TiVo boxes as 90% of what I watch is OTA HD. With my Blu-ray player and OTA HD TiVo, I think I could survive.

This leads to two questions:

1) Is DirecTv really turing off their MPEG-2 TiVo receivers?
2) Has anyone heard anything about a new DirecTv TiVo box?

The following info is totally rumored with out anything to back it up, just personal experience in the field.

The following info is totally rumored with out anything to back it up, just personal experience in the field.

DirecTV no longer supports Tivo based products, and Tivo is being extremely slow to respond to Tivo based issues namely on standard DirecTV Tivo Boxes. This as a tech is very frustrating because of Tivo's latest software release 6.3 on non-hd boxes causing many issues that Tivo refuses to correct.

It is also not that DirecTV is shutting off Tivo service (nor Dish Network) with Tivo's continued lack of support, Tivo is severing ties with DBS services. Tivo is a product by a separate company and not a service such as DVR or PVR.

/End

As far as your issue if you fight hard enough you can keep your grandfathered services, but from the way you write, you really could care less which service you go with. But yea, eventually Mpeg2 will be gone, Mpeg2 is not a Tivo tool, but rather an older industry standard. Mpeg4 allows for more bandwidth an more channels and options per transponder and arguably better service.

Since DirecTv took over their boxes (with the first Series 2 DirecTiVo boxes), and began collecting the revenue they have to pay TiVo for support. They have chosen to invest the minimum, as part of their plan to force people to move to their DVRs. TiVo cannot even release a new software version for their boxes without permission from DirecTv.

It is also not that DirecTV is shutting off Tivo service (nor Dish Network) with Tivo's continued lack of support, Tivo is severing ties with DBS services.

Actually, it is that DirecTv is shutting off TiVo. DirecTv used to allow many companies to produce boxes for their service. The Series 1 DirecTiVo boxes (and even the first Series 2 boxes were built during that period). The Series 1 DirecTiVo receivers where completely TiVo branded. Customers paid TiVo for service. When DirecTv dumped UltimateTv, they also took over control of the DirecTiVo boxes and began paying TiVo a fee per user and collecting the revenue from customers (that was when DVR service became free with Platinum service). With the HR10-250 and the R10, they decided to adopt Echostar's model of being the only box provider for their service. Unlike the FCCs rules requiring cable companies to support Cable Card, the Satellite providers have been allowed to lock out other equipment manufacturers.

DirecTv would not allow TiVo to support Music and Photos, HME, Multi Room Viewing, or any of the other Series 2 features. They did this, as far as I can tell, to purposely cripple the TiVo product so it would not grossly exceed the capabilities of their new boxes.

Go play with a Series 3 box and see what the current state of the art is for DVR.

I see this posted from time to time at which I have to say...who cares (other then the Tivo diehards).

If Tivo is more important then content then by all means go where you can get Tivo. But most people find content and price the most important thing. They could care less what the DVR is, just so long as they have one. And 99% of the population has never used a Tivo and thinks all DVRs are "Tivo".

I agree whole-heartedly. If you refuse to use anything but Tivo, then go elsewhere to keep using Tivo while getting considerably less HD. If you want the quantity of HD, make the switch and learn the new DVR. They both record HD content for later playback - that's what I'm looking for.

I was a Tivo fan after several years of use, but the only thing I was dreading losing was the dual live buffers. I do indeed miss the DLB, but I just had to change my habits - I can't pause one show and go channels surf like I used to. It's not that big of a deal - well work losing that feature for the added HD content. And the menus are actually quite a bit faster with D* than Tivo.

If all things were equal, I would probably lean slightly towards Tivo - although it's pretty close. The D* receivers do some thing that I like better than the Tivo boxes too. It is also faster in most cases. I do prefer the guide layout on the Tivo and as I mentioned miss DLB. But since all things are not equal, I choose HD. :D

Good point about everyone calling their DVR "Tivo" - it's kind of become the generic term even though it's a brand, like "Kleenex", etc.

Same here. The other big thing I miss is being able to search for shows to record on only the channels I get, or only the channels in my favorite channels list. I used to be able to do a quick search of upcoming movies and set the TiVo to record them. With the HR20, I have to weed through 10,000 movies on 1,000 channels that I don't get. I'm sure that the HR20/21 could probably do this with a software upgrade.

People who want useful features.

The HR21 records my shows and I watch them. What more do I need?

How about Amazon Unbox with its ability to give one truly on-demand content, or Rhapsody for Music.

If Tivo is more important then content then by all means go where you can get Tivo.

TiVo service is not more important than content, but it is the ability to discover content, not just record things about which you already knew that makes a DVR useful. TiVo suggestions and Swivel Search both function to find new content to watch.

In addition, Amazon Unbox also provides a great deal of (commercial free) content.

But most people find content and price the most important thing.

Most people do not read these forums, do not have HD and do not have any DVR. For them moving from no DVR to any DVR is an improvement. That does not mean that they would not prefer a better DVR experience, nor that we should be satisfied with DirecTv simply because they have given us something. I switched to DirecTv from Echostar because of TiVo. My parents are about to switch to RCN from DirecTv because of TiVo. If DirecTv does not fix things and if Brighthouse provides service to my house soon, I will also switch. DirecTv has dropped its quality through too much compression and its move from multiple equipment providers to single sourcing everything.

I hope they improve, but if they do not, they will lose my business (and that of many others).

This is another example of what I mean when I say "content discovery". Being able to record a show I cannot find does not help me. While it is possible that, given enough time, an HR20/21 can add all the features that TiVo has, but would it not be better to just let us buy (even just as an option) real TiVo DVRs?

Who is stopping you from getting a "real" TiVo, Alan? There's a Blue Moon special TiVo is running to celebrate the anniversary of their launch and it includes a TiVo HD, Lifetime Service, wireless network adapter, and plush doll. Since the only way to get the MPEG 4 HD channels is with a DIRECTV DVR and you don't want to do that, why deny yourself HD recording? Switch to cable, OTA, or FIOS, if it's available, and you'll have your "real" TiVo. Oh, and if you go cable, hope and pray that the SDV dongle is released in Q3 this year.

Me personally, I feel sorry for folks that limit themselves to one DVR platform. Oh, I've used TiVos, both standalone and DIRECTV-integrated, but I won't let a DVR platform determine who provides my programming. Now, if TiVo could/would deliver programming to go along with the DVR at a reasonable rate with a good selection of HD, I'd consider them. But, they can't/won't and my two deciding factors for a provider are programming and price. DIRECTV fulfills that and I'm quite happy with them. I can understand why they want one interface and don't want TiVo to be part of it.
S
I do agree that you obviously want Tivo first so as suggested get the deal on a Tivo HD and get cable or Fios and be happy. No reason to not be happy.

People who want useful features.

Like what. Again, 95% (if not 99%) of people will never use the non-DVR features, in fact many don't even use all the DVR features. I know quite a few DVR owners that do nothing but pause live TV with it, they don't even record their programs. You try to explain what they can do with it and they glaze over and just say they watch their programs live because that's all they know for the past 30 years.

How about Amazon Unbox with its ability to give one truly on-demand content, or Rhapsody for Music.

Easily done with Media Share on an HR20/21. I can listen to my thousands of MP3's or stream Internet radio stations. I can also watch You Tube videos and watch any online TV shows or movies I have downloaded. Quite easy actually.

TiVo service is not more important than content, but it is the ability to discover content, not just record things about which you already knew that makes a DVR useful. TiVo suggestions and Swivel Search both function to find new content to watch.

I don't have a problem. In fact I can log on to my DirecTV account (say at work when I'm bored) and do all kinds of searches in the online guide and get suggestions like you get with Netflix and I can schedule anything I find to record with a click of the button via remote scheduling. Yea, no suggestions on the box itself but then that's a Tivo thing that nobody else can copy probably due to patent issues.

In addition, Amazon Unbox also provides a great deal of (commercial free) content.

Already stated that I can watch tons of commercial free online content already. Don't need Amazon Unbox. DirecTV also has dozens and dozens of VOD channels to which you can download programs. I'm pretty sure I could also view Amazon Unbox using the Windows Media extender, although I don't use Unbox so can't say for sure.

Most people do not read these forums, do not have HD and do not have any DVR. For them moving from no DVR to any DVR is an improvement. That does not mean that they would not prefer a better DVR experience, nor that we should be satisfied with DirecTv simply because they have given us something.

First off, over 30 million people have a DVR and that should be 40 million by year's end. Of that less then 4 million are Tivo. So believe me that a LOT of people have a DVR and have never used a Tivo.
I agree we should want a better DVR experience but guess what, to me I prefer the DVR experience I get from DirecTV then that I got from Tivo. The GUI/menu's are faster and easier to find things and make more sense. But again, that's *me*. You prefer the Tivo UI. And in the end it is all *personal preference*. But just because you prefer the Tivo UI doesn't make all others bad. ;)

DirecTv has dropped its quality through too much compression

Obviously you haven't seen any of the MPEG4 HD.

Again, you have options to keep using Tivo, I'd suggest you be happy and make the jump.

I almost put mom on the Premier when they were giving current subs a $20 a month discount. But I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would come out ahead on the Platinum because you'd almost have to be using all 10 receivers 24/ 7. :D

Still, I guess some folks have more bucks than brains.

PVR4Me,
I am not sure why you feel compelled to ask us questions while ignoring all answers. Please feel free to make any decision you want. Do not feel you have the need to convert anyone. Trust us, you are not the first to make the arguments.

People that love TiVo above all will probably eventually leave DirecTV. People that want a DVR with the most HD content will learn to love or tolerate the HR2x. Love for TiVo is like a religion with some. The likelihood of converting a zealot is not high.

Enjoy whatever you feel you must do.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Yes, many have hacked a DirecTV or Dish Network dish before. Quite undersized, but would receive the 97w KU stations with an LNBF swap. Make a template to set the LNBF face angle and distance from the reflector. Remove the current circular polarity LNBFs and make a bracket to hold the replacement linear LNBF in the correct centered position. Remember to set the polarity skew.

would probably also work well for NHK on 101W and possibly for PBS on 99W. I used one for a while on 30W. Just keep in mind that because it's undersized for those satellites, it might work fine in clear weather but won't have much margin to account for signal degradation during rain/snow

If you can find one, the Shaw / Star Choice 75e ellipticals are great for use on 97, 99, and 101W. They are really just rebranded ChannelMaster 75 cm reflectors and use linear LNBFs by default out of the box.

Everyone else's mileage may vary.

I have read that some have converted this type dish but after giving it a good look, it's the lnb conversion that is the bottleneck. Does anyone have a picture of their attempt to configure the lnb? I watched a video on youtube from the save it for parts guy and he used duct tape! Guess it worked but I'm thinking something a bit more permanent!
Thanks to all for your interest and replies...

Many of us have used a universal LNBF mount (or get creative with L brackets and plumbers tape - perforated metal strapping). Use a few inches of aluminum tube (or a piece of 1x2" lumber) to extend the support arm (replacing the plastic mount used by DirecTV and Dish) to place the LNBF throat opening at the correct distance from the reflector, the correct height and at the correct angle. Nothing magical... simply place the new linear LNBF in the center at the same distance, height and angle as the current combo.

On the West Coast, a 40-cent differential is common. It used to be 30 cents before the prices rose above $3.

A "full dollar more" sounds like it may be boat gas (non-alcoholic), which is a whole different discussion.

This started a couple months ago. I have 2 H3s on one network, both with 2 EHD identical 3 TB seperately powered so all recordings are accessible by all 4k & J4s (8 of them).

On one H3 (not the main one that controls the MOCA network), after it reboots, it doesn't recognize it has two EHDs plugged into it. Rebooting the EHD by their power source doesn't fix it. Resetting the network doesn't. Software h3 reset doesn't fix it. Rebooting MOCA h3 doesn't fix it but so far, after 3+ cold boots (unplug pwr to H3 with unrecognized EHDs), it finally it figures out they are plugged into it. BUT.... Then when you open a program it only partially shows series and episodes, but instead of showing recordings, it only shows upcoming airings. HELP!!!!

JohnGalt1234 - So you basically have 2 Hopper 3's. The CasinoH3 is the one that is Hopper 3 only while Master Bedroom is a Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus setup.
Master Bedroom uses Android TV (ATV) software so the DISH part is actually a app and will behave differently as you can probably tell the Guide's are different on the Master Bedroom which will resemble the same guide used on other ATV devices such as the Joey 4 and Wireless Joey 4. If I am correct, the CasinoH3 is the one with the problem since you did say the one dated 09/05/2026 is the naughty one while 08/15/2026 named Master Bedroom is the nice one. Usually I would expect the CasinoH3 to be the one without the problem because it's Hopper 3 only and Master Bedroom would be the one with problems because it has the Hopper Plus involved. That is why they behave differently because CasinoH3 is running the native Hopper 3 software while Master Bedroom is running the Android TV software and also it runs a app called DISH known as package com.dish.atv.launcher, the version for mines is P15403 2026100917 so it's probably the same version as the Hopper Plus software version with the date of October 9, 2026, not sure what the 17 means except maybe revision 17?

This explains it better than I can. Sorry, had to take all the ads out.

It is not just a display signal as explained above. When you have the Hopper+ connected, it uses Android TV for pretty much everything except for the satellite signal which is why it uses the DISH app for the standard Hopper 3 functions. But that should not matter because in your case, CasinoH3 is the Hopper 3 with the EHD which is what you call the naughty one based on the dates you mentioned and Master Bedroom which has the Hopper Plus connected to the Hopper 3 that does not have the problem. So one way to test the theory is disconnect the Hopper Plus from that Hopper 3 and then use the EHD's connected to CasinoH3 currently to see if the same issue exists. That way you will know if the problem is there without a Hopper Plus connected or if CasinoH3 is just a bad hopper to begin with.

Normally when you disconnect the Hopper Plus, it will be 30 minutes or more before you can use the Hopper 3 again.

What you want to do is:
hold the POWER button in, not the red reset button, for about 45 seconds or so while disconnecting the power to the Plus and moving the HDMI cable and it will reboot to the normal Hopper only immediately.

But the Hopper (713) does not start the EHD read process. The light changes to indicate that the EHD has detected a valid USB cable, but the Hopper does not recognize it.

Can anyone check on this and report back? Recorded programs and then press skip forward a few times to see if it's smooth? Normally, it just jumps to the right place after the skips.

Has anyone noticed an FF stutter with 713? I used to be able to hit FF a few times and skip smoothly. After 713 (maybe 712), when I skip forward, there is a definite stutter for as many times as I have pressed FF.

Can anyone check on this and report back? Recorded programs and then press skip forward a few times to see if it's smooth? Normally, it just jumps to the right place after the skips.
My wife mentioned that her remote is acting strange this morning. She hit FF and it went to 15x FF.

I'm getting fabulous picture on Ch. 148 4k, but zero audio with H713. This is with a recorded show (Notre Dame game). Anyone else have this? Audio is fine on every other channel.
This has been an ongoing issue. A fix is coming, probably in the next software version.

I have Dish Hopper and Hopper Plus and also have Alexa Echo. I link the Alex skill to Dish and it asks me to enter the pairing code shown on the TV. I go into Dish Settings and there is no Alexa shown. Not sure what to do.

Guys,
Android is Google. Google is Android. Android OS and Google TV are the same thing.
The Hopper+ and Joey 4's run Android TV, which is Google's television version of Android.
That means under the hood, you have:
  • Linux kernel
  • Android framework
  • Google TV / Android TV interface
  • Google Play Store for TV apps
Alexa is the competition. Google is not going to host their competition.
The old Hopper Carbon UI is NOT Google so that's why Alexa was on there.

Understood. But here's the rub - Google Assistant setup is ALSO missing from the Hopper Plus setup. I'm a paraplegic.and need to use voice controls as much as possible but I can't press a button on the remote to activate Google Assistant. I prefer ALEXA (or ALEXA+) but I have one older google device and will go that route IF they make it available. BTW calling Dish Customer Service is no help- they just say they have no info on if/when there will be an update.

Tell Alexa verbally what to do.
