Right now, except for the big four networks in some markets, locals on Dish are apparently analog feeds which have been digitized and compressed for satellite transmission. Next February those analog feeds will be gone. How will E* (and D* for that matter) adjust to this?

E* for sure doesn't have the bandwidth to handle all these channels decently. As far as I can tell, the only thing they can do for now would be to downconvert and compress using MPEG-2. The PQ would be no better than it is today and possibly worse. And, at least in my area, many of the non-big-4 locals already have lots of HD programming that is worth watching.

In the long run, they could increase bandwidth by going to all MPEG-4 (and putting up more satellites) and decent PQ on the independent locals could become a reality. But I can't imagine that happening in less than 5 years even if the Eastern Arc and (I hope it will come) Western Arc go off as planned. It will take longer than that unless market forces or new laws come into play that push them to provide high quality locals.

Is there a chance they would drop independent locals completely? I believe they are under some legal compulsion to provide these locals today. Will the law still force E* to provide them after the big change?

#2 - No, my local ABC and CBS currently transmit (3) channels: (1) analog (SD), (1) digital (SD), and (1) digital (HD). On the ABC station, they show the same programming on all (3).

No. You are confusing channels with subchannels (multicasting). Let me use my local station KTLA (which is also a superstation) as an example. KTLA started broadcasting the standard NTSC analog signal in the late 1940's on channel 5. It is still doing so, and will continue to do so until next February. With the advent of digital television, KTLA was one of the earliest adopters of digital. They were allocated channel 31 to use to broadcast their digital signal. Channel 5 and channel 31 are two separate channels. The digital signal on channel 31 has (at the moment) two subchannels labeled 5.1 and 5.5. (In the past their were three subchannels in use on channel 31). KTLA has chosen to put the same shows on their analog channel (5) and the first subchannel on their digital channel (channel 31 subchannel 5.1). If a program is available in HD, it appears in HD on channel 31 and in SD of course on channel 5. I do not know what Dish is doing today, but as recently as last December I know that KTLA on LA locals came from the analog feed.

When your digital TV or your Dish receiver with an OTA tuner search for stations, they find the actual digital channel with all its subchannels. They display the subchannel ID's. The fact that the actual channel (31 in KTLA's case) differs from the analog channel number (5 in KTLA's case) is deliberately hidden so as not to confuse the TV-watching public. KTLA is known as channel 5 and has been for not quite 60 years. They would never want to call themselves channel 31, even though that is what they actually are (for digital).

A similar story holds for all stations presently broadcasting both analog and digital. Come next February, there will be no analog broadcasts. Stations presently broadcasting analog will either lose that channel all together, or they will lose their digital channel allocation and switch their old analog channel to digital broadcasts. Both possibilities will take place. But no station will be allowed to keep two channels. I am confident that the channel number the public is used to will remain in their names and be displayed on TV's or tuners.

Stations can have as many subchannels displaying whatever HD or SD content they like, as long as their bandwidth allocation is not exceeded. As of a year ago it was technically possible to have two subchannels, both HD (compressed). Or one subchannel HD and two SD. Or no HD and five SD subchannels. The only constant is the total bandwidth of a channel.

Getting back to KTLA and Dish. At least as recently as last December, when I tested, Dish was giving local channel subscribers in LA the KTLA analog feed, digitized and compressed for satellite transmission. Obviously Dish would not want to keep doing this indefinitely. A direct digital feed is much cleaner and analog feeds are slated to go away. But there are problems, which is why I initiated this thread in the first place. Until next February no station is required to maintain any standards for their digital channel as far as signal strength or availability, because the FCC considers digital television to be in test mode until then. Digital channels can be shut off or weakened at will, and KTLA actually did this from the time ever since they began digital broadcasting on channel 31, up until this past December at least. They would stop (or at least weaken the signal) digital broadcasting for hours or even days at a time, sometimes accidentally and sometimes on purpose for testing.

Apparently, from following this thread, most people have not experienced similar problems and in fact are already getting digital feeds from Dish for their locals. That is great. But the fact remains that, without major upgrades, getting HD from Dish on independent locals is not in the cards. It is my belief that most consumers do not understand this. They think "digital = HD" and will expect (if they subscribe to locals) to see gorgeous HD on every local channel Dish sends them.

I hope that will be true someday, which is why I started what I thought would be a short and sweet thread---one question and two or three answers. I would love to know what Dish plans in this area and on what schedule. I am smart enough to know that it cannot be true as early as this coming February. I am even wondering if some markets will lose some locals all together (via Dish) temporarily.

This question is important to me because I live in a big market with lots of stations, many of which have interesting programming. But because of my location, I do not get acceptable signal for most of them OTA.

The must carry regulations still apply and will next year. the problem is taht ifa stationc annot get their main digital signal to the E* or Dd* head end in that market yhrn the satellite carrier will not be required to carry them.

Will there be ANY disruptions? probably. but it is hard for any of us to say what specific channels might be dropped. We do not know which channels The carriers ae picking up digitally now and we cannot even be uste if the carriers are getting a fiber feed or an OTA one.

B ut be aware that in Feb of 2008 these stations will be broadcasting digitally but not necessarily in HD. Many of the independents in particualr will have a lot of SD programming so the tax on bandwidth may not be as great as you think.

Here's a somewhat related article, FCC Yields To DirecTV, Dish On HD Carriage - 3/19/2008 6:40:00 PM - Multichannel News...

Thanks!!!

That article is very informative, disappointing, but not surprising. Given today's satellite situation it is obviously impossible to have DirectTV and Dish carry all the locals in HD by next year, even if somebody handed each company a trillion dollars. I started this thread because I wondered how long it would take. The article says "by 2013". As a realist I doubt that it will even happen that soon. But at least I know the pressure is on for D* and E* to comply.

I know. HD is expensive and stations will be slow to adopt it until viewers demand it (still years away). But, unfortunately for me, there are two LA independents which have lots of HD programming already. KTLA is a WB station (I forget the new network's name). And KCAL-9 is owned by CBS. As a former independent it does not broadcast CBS shows (we have channel 2 for that). But they broadcast all their news in HD and their reporters are all gorgeous! Also, many PBS stations have lots of HD but Dish considers PBS stations to be locals. In fact, the Orange County PBS station (KOCE channel 50) broadcasts HD almost exclusively.

Aha! Now we get to the root of the question..... :p

I know HipKat said that they were working on conversions but we got the official news yesterday right from Dish that starting next month all DMA's will be on the western arc, and all customers will be assigned to that. That's gonna mean a lot of customers around here aren't gonna get Dish unless there are exceptions. Too many mountains and trees.

I don't know why DISH doesn't just start a streaming version of DISH and then if you can't see the western arc you go with streaming versions and then they could keep customers if they had good internet speeds. I mean Sling TV could be changed to Streaming DISH TV if they wanted since both companies are under Echostar. Then you would still be able to use your ota antenna with Air TV devices like I do with Air TV Anywhere with 4 ota tuners.

I watch mostly SD channels (H&I, Start and ION, etc.). There are plenty of advertisers, this time of the year it is mostly Medicare Advantage plans, auto extended warranties and the occasional walk-in-tub. They know who is watching.

Because he didn't have a fleet of reusable rockets. Starlink works because SpaceX is able to launch hundreds (thousands?) of their Starlink satellites for what a single geostationary Internet satellite costs to build and launch on a disposable launcher.

But how is it reusable if it's disposable

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Love this guy's channel. Looks like Walmart has thrown in the towel when it comes to conventional car batteries.

I bought a new AGM battery from Walmart about a year ago, it is already needing replacing. I thought about just buying a regular battery but from what I've read, that might not be a smart move. Might check my Forscan program and see if I can change the battery type from AGM.

When you need a battery, you need a battery.

If you can wait, new technologies are on the not-too-distant horizon.

You're probably doing something wrong if you're only getting a year out of an AGM battery. Heat and infrequent charging both significantly reduce lifetime.

Huh? How can I be doing something wrong.....I took out the original battery, that was 6 yrs old and put in a new one.....kinda hard to screw that up. I figure it was just a bad battery....it happens.

The biggest takeaway I got from this video was the Walmart batteries only had something like 85% of battery life left even though they were brand NEW. The ones from O'Reilly all tested 100% of life left.

And the Walmart ones mostly had very little warranty.

My last AGM (using now) I got from O Rielly's, its the Super Start ... I got the Platnium, they had several to choose from.

He sounds like he's trying to sell me a pocket hose.

I just had to replace a car battery this week and thought I'd look into LiFePo4. Amazon has plenty of them, but all have top posts and only one 'also' has side connections (Group 75).Then I read that they're really lousy in the cold. So, an AGM, but again, almost nothing with side terminals instead of top. In researching that, I read that most mfrs in recent years have dropped side terminals and gone back to the old top posts, which is surprising to me since those are more corrosion-prone, cause the battery to need more space and are generally more hazardous. Finally I just threw up my hands and bought a regular lead-acid at Sam's Club. They had a Group 75 "Duracell" with side terminals only. It was virtually the only such battery with side posts on their shelves

Had a Die Hard in my folks cellar for over 6 years. Pulled it out, slapped it on a charger for a day. Put it in my 'Cuda and drove it around for a week of my vacation. Next year, the same. But my dad kept it topped off for me.It was a mid 80's battery in early 1990.

Flooded acid batteries like a float voltage of around 13.5-13.8 voltage.
AGM needs a float of 14.2 volts. So if you slap an AGM in where a flooded was. It never gets a full charge.
"Why do they die so fast?" Question answered. There are folks who sell voltage regulators for alternators that are designed to boost float voltage for AGM batteries.
The other way around? Flooded will gas-off a little at 14.2 volts. But seems to tolerate it pretty good.

Lithium car/bike/atv batteries. After 3 batteries in my Harley. The OEM flooded and two AGM's (before the 14.2 volt float requirement to let them live was learned). I bought a lithium for it. 4 year, no gripe warranty after having it tested by an approved store.
The thing started like Thor himself sent a bolt from the sky. Except......try to start it around freezing? Nope. Needed a heating pad.
And I usually like to park it around events in the evening with the parking light on. Looks cool like that.
We could traipse around for a few hours no worries. Hop on, fire it up, and go putt around.
Lithium? A Dakota Lithium at least. The BMS shuts it right down if it discharges below <something>.
Come back. Parking lights off. Won't start. And you know the rest. But it lasted 6 years. A lot better than 'new every two'. And the fact that powersports batteries are warranted for six, maybe nine months. Ludicrous.

I called Noco. Asked all of the right questions. Great warranty. Save some bucks ordering directly, faster service that the wally world alternative.
They addressed (or claimed over the phone) that the shut down was addressed. Sure. The BMS keeps it form being damaged. But if it is shut down because it does become low. Shut down any load (key on, parking or headlights left on) for 10-15 minutes and you get a second try to start your rig. Not a bad thing if it really works. Right?!

Exide, Interstate? Be very afraid. They ain't what they used to be. In Florida my '70 Cutlass had an Interstate (early 90') that lasted 6 years until it dropped its plates at an intersection and boiled over. In Florida, mind you. The last Interstate.....done in 2. Guys down there would suck out the acid and put water in shortly before the warranty ran out. Make it to the auto parts, get them tested. And get a new one pro rated. No more pro rating.
You can't beat an Odyssey. Napa, AC Deco (the better ones). Yup.
The mom and pop Car Quest only sells Die Hard. For a reason, the old man says. So they convinced that a Die HArd Platinum was the hot ticket for me. l will see. Stand by!

You can't cut Mr. Project Farm down. He does great tests of all sorts of things. Not sponsored and pressured to slap a little sugar on his comparisons and reviews. Compared to the Brits and Aussies with their constant overzealous and same sounding (Dave from EEVblog) rant. I like P-Farm a lot. Of course I like AvE (Boltr) too.
Reminds me to beware when wearing shorts around the garage vice.

Opinions may vary.

And the Walmart ones mostly had very little warranty.
The days of the 84-month warranty appear long gone, regardless of brand or where you acquired it. Warranties tend to be shorter, with much greater dependence on quick prorating.

The big problem for lead-acid batteries (whether flooded or AGM) is that the US no longer produces lead (the last smelter closed in 2013) and must import it.

Recycling covers a good chunk of the need (~70%), but it isn't free.
EarDemon
I've always got regular OEM Ford Motorcraft batteries from the dealership and have never really had an issue. On my old Lincoln Aviator (the SUV from the early 00s, not the CUV of today), I had some phantom drain and went though a few batteries, but that was an anomaly and with the standard warranty I got free replacements. Taking the Aviator out of the picture, I've bought two batteries in my 24 years of driving. One battery replacement in my Mountaineer, one in my Navigator. But I probably would have had another one had I kept it around longer. Didn't have the Bronco long enough, and so far still on the factory battery for my Expedition.

I run more than the average bear. Dash cam, two radar detectors (yes, I'm aware that can be problematic when using simultaneously), laser jammers and a police scanner. I'm in Buffalo, 90 degree summers and 0 degree winters. Once in a while in the dead of winter I'll get an alert from the Ford app saying remote features have been disabled to conserve battery, but it starts right up.

While the bye can help the top four teams and those the Cartels would like to protect in the playoff, I think the bye is also about making the Cartel championships mean something. One problem with a playoff is it does diminish the conference title a bit.
