What is wrong with Dish Network? I had to call multiple times and was on the phone for hours trying to activate a few used receivers. The customer tried calling in but had issues with them and could not understand what they were saying (and neither could I half the time). Every dang time I got someone from the Phillipines. Some of them sounded American!!!

These people got flooded out earlier this month in a trailer park and was moving to the next lot over. These receivers were on my account previously. They first told me there was a $50 balance owed on the receivers and could not be activated until I paid the balance. I told them that was a lie but she said that was what the screen told her so I hang up and call back and verifiy that these receivers were shown to have been on my account. I have annual prepay and checking account autopay on my account. To top it off the guy starts by asking me what my secret password is. There is NO secret password on my account. He says that since I verified my name and address that he could still address my issue and he verified that there was no balance owed on the receivers and I told him that I needed him to transfer the receivers from my account to someone else's account. These receivers were not activated on my account but they still show up on the account until transferred to another one. The guy said that the computer was giving him some messages not allowing him to transfer but he would put notes on the account so that the customer could call in to activate it.

I hang up and call back and tell them my account information and to transfer it to the other account and am told that it was done. Receiver is not activated. I waited about 5 minutes and decided to call back and make sure. Sure enough they said the information was not in the system about any receivers being activated so I have to read off the numbers once again. I am told that it was activated and that it would take about 10 minutes to become active. I hang up and sure enough the programming does not become activated. I did verify that the receiver had the latest software version as well.

I call back once again and was told once again that these receivers were not shown in the system as activated. REDICULOUS!!! It's almost midnight now and I had a guy with me waiting to get done that I had hired to do some minor carpentry work for these woman. Everyone was starting to get impatient including myself but they did not get rude with me and understood my frustration and did not take theirs out on me. Well the lady tells me that she had to talk to a supervisor because the computer says that it is not a promotional receiver and I tell her that they are used, just activate them. I tell her to tell her superivisor to help her get this done and she said she would have the sup do it to overide it. She comes back on the phone and says that the receivers are outdated/too old to activate with the type of dish that I have. I told her that I know what I am doing and that I have the proper dish (a legacy setup). She then comes back on the phone and tells me that her supervisor had to call someone else and be on the phone with them to get it activated that it would be another 15 minutes. I must have talked to them for 3-4 hours but they finally got it activated. I asked for credit on the customer's account after this fiasco and they said they could not do that because they had no down time. I spend over 3 hours on the phone yet it only took me about 30 minutes to install the system.

I had other phone calls that had to be made as well before I got the dang things activated. I had to make so many that I lost count. REDICULOUS! I used to be able to activate these in about a few minutes, now hours?

Even the tech support is from the Phillipines now. No wonder why Dish Network has sucked on churn lately. They have the lousiest customer support there is and they should be extremely ashamed of themselves or having this type of customer service. The time before this when I had a system activated I was on the phone for an hour trying to get receivers activated. They couldn't activate one of them saying a balance was owed on it when Dish Network told me it was cleared before. I had to hunt up another receiver with clear balance and the weather got bad and icy. Customer calls me up and says that he almost cancelled the check he gave me but figured I already cashed it in (and I did) and was going to sue me in magistrate's court if I did not come out and give refund or bring him his receiver. I had to drive out icy roads to prevent a lawsuit.

I have had issues myself trying to get receivers activated at home and they tell me I have to pay $50 for a new smart card everytime I turn around it seems. I got the warranty on my account to prevent this. What a load of bull! Even after I got my warranty they charged me for one of the two smart cards (the other showed up as $0 charge for one) and I had to contact them again about it. I told them if the $50 credit did not show up on the account next month then I would switch to DirecTv. It showed up on next month's bill.

Is there any way to avoid this crap? I don't know how much more of this pathetic customer support I can take. It's like they don't know what they are doing or make it so hard to activate a receiver on an account. Even when I check in advance for a balance on a receiver it does no good because later on they pull some kind of crap and can't activate them.

I loathe thinking about having to call one of these companies csr's. It's just about any company any more, but iv'e been pretty lucky thus far not having to call dish with any problems. Even though now that I say that, iv'e probably cursed myself.
T
FWIW I've noticed that the 721 is much more sensitive to LNB drift then the VIP 622 and VIP612. My 721 was also using a separator and was the box the power inserter is hooked up to. 721 ---> separator ---> Power inserter ---> DPP44. For the time being the 721 is unhooked until I run the wire to put it in a different location and has been replaced where it was with a VIP612 which is much more responsive to the remote.

The 721 SD box was having troubles with lost sat locks on different channels and the VIP622 just worked. Checking the LNB drift in the 622 showed a drift of -5 or -6 depending on how hot the day was. Going to -4 at night when the 721 would start working fine. DPP44 switch and 3 locations on two dishes.
T
D* jumpers how about telling how the D* DVRs compare to the E* DVRs.

BTW I have had good luck with CSRs and any tech visits such as the recent ones where they changed the LNBs for drift.

Customer Service Reps and Service Techs are the Achilles heel of E*. The overseas call centers are an abomination. The Service Techs are definitely better, but I have had them show up without the proper equipment and borrow mine. I have had them no-show, or have to re-schedule due to their error. Some haven't been able to speak English.

You can have the best equipment in the world, but if you aggravate the customers to death in the process - you are training them to hate you. This is a real problem that is costing customers and dollars on the bottom line.

I was going to switch to D* several years ago when the assistant at a local installer's company told me they were just as bad as E*.

I also have Comcast Cable and Broadband and their reps (US based) are excellent.

Is poor service and aggravation just part of the price of Satellite TV?

I also would like to hear if there is a better customer service experience out there, too.

Wanted to update you on my D* installation. The Service Tech was AWESOME! Yes, trees are a problem, but he spent time explaining alternatives to me. We ended up with dish in the front yard hidden from the street by a tree. Cabling had to be changed around and we put a receiver in a room that hadn't had anything before. Tech was there for 4 hours! That was the problem with E* techs...they didn't want to spend the time. The picture and sound are fantastic on the HD channels and just fine on the others. We did have an old E*, so those with newer E* equipment might not see a difference. I have to get used to the different remote..the kids have it all figured out already. They DVR things already too. I'm really glad we made the switch.

I was worried about the D* dvr issue when I recently switched to D* from E*based on what I have read, but really, its not an issue at all. Its not bad at all. There are some differences, the 622 is faster but I work around that instead of using the up and down arrow to navigate the guide, I use the page button and it works great! The HR21 has a screen saver, when you pause a couple of min's it goes to screen saver, my 622 did not. I do like the search feature a little better on the HR21. The remote takes 2 batteries, the 622 remote took 4 I'm pretty sure.

One thing I don't like; and it may just be something I'm doing wrong. But my local CBS affiliate broadcasts a 5am to 6 am showing of local news. Then a 6am to 7 am broadcast of local news. With my 622 I was able to record the 6am to 7am showing mon-fri. The HR21 won't let me. I have to chose record series, so it tapes both everyday. No big deal, I just delete the other but still. It is a difference. Overall. The change was super easy. Dish has one up on Direct for having to only have one cable to the dvr. Direct has to have 2, but not for long.

It states the average amount they are under water is OVER $7,000. :eek

Personally, I tend to be the type that drives a vehicle for a lot of years....do my own oil changes and other fluid changes. Just replaced the spark plugs and a couple coils. Youtube is great for things like this.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Lately my eight year old Dell laptop has been shutting off even when I have a full battery. I have had to keep it plugged up all the time to keep this from happening. Any idea what is causing this? I replaced the battery about three years ago.

A recalibration might be needed. Even if it shows full, the individual cells may have become unbalaced. And the BMS chip in the battery reports false information to the pc.
Try this. Start it up in the bios/uefi and leave it there until the battery dies and it shuts off.
It might just keep running longer than in Windows. Or run for a short while and shut off.
If it's the first case. Probably just needs a balancing. If the latter, the pack might just be dead.
Not throwing stones but perhaps just a cheaply constructed battery with substandard cells. Could be.

Patience. Keep restarting it in bios/uefi until it won't fire up anymore.
Then plug the charger in and let it complete a full charge. And see what happens. If it's better.
Do the same thing one more time. Run it until it dies dead-dead. Then just let it charge, pc shut off.
When charged, it might be better. It might not be.

There are bench jigs that read the actual BMS and override it to let a tech manually monitor and charge the separate packs. They can also reset any "time bombs" in it that cause an otherwise good pack to show bad.
Maybe Santa will be good to me some year.

You might just need a new battery. Maybe the PC power management chip is going. A Dell common thing.
Leaving a laptop plugged in with a full battery is known to reduce the life. Asus for one recommends that you don't leave the charger plugged in all of the time even when shut down. And setting Windows to charge the battery to 85% instead of 100% increases life.
That's all I got.

That was quite enough....I definitely learned something from your post. Thanks

I set up a music server for my brother a few years ago. It's basically a small headless computer but it needs to have a DHCP IP address reserved for it in the router settings. This was easy to do in his DSL router. He's switching to Starlink now and I was wondering if these setting are easily accessible in the Starlink router. I'm pretty sure he will be getting the latest V5 router.

If you can't get into the router to reserve an IP address just don't use DHCP on the device that needs connected and assign it to a specific IP address in the network settings.

They are not. Your best bet is to set up a third-party router, attached to the Starlink for your server, that you can get into, like a Linksys, etc

The Starlink V5 Install Kit I just got comes with the Mini Router. It is pretty limited in what it can do. For example, it can provide only one IP subnet at a time, no Guest Network, but it does support the pass-thru to a third-party Router. You can also split the Wi-Fi into separate 5 GHz & 2.4 GHz SSIDs to help some IoT devices that don't support 5 GHz bands to work.

The larger Starlink Router that still comes with the V4 Kit does support a Guest Network with separate IPv4 Subnet, but it's $120 from Starlink. And it still won't do DHCP Reservations.
harshness
If you can restrict the DHCP address space to assign addresses to one end of the subnet (i.e. x.x.x.50+), you can manually assign the IP address on pretty much any operating system. This is a default behavior on several popular routers. As the Router Mini only supports 235 devices, I expect that's already done.

Another option is to use a router that supports PoE to power the antenna. This article discusses that option (under PoE Power heading):

Now that I've had the v5 kit with the Mini Router, it's not as bad as I first thought. Yes, no DHCP reservations, but you can set up multiple SSIDs that have separate IPv4 subnets, and like the big brother, you can select from 192.168.x.0/24 or 10.x.0.0/16 (where "x" is 1-4).

You can also split a subnet and have different SSIDs for the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz channels to handle some IoT devices. I haven't discovered what subnet the 2nd NIC on the router assigns, I'm guessing it's the first subnet.
