Ok, so today DirecTV was supposed to come move my service to my new apartment. The installer calls me before the install and asks if I've gotten permission to drill holes from outside. I said no and said that I'd be fine with running a flat coax under the window sill, just like I had done at my other apartment. He said that DirecTV no longer lets them run flat coax lines during an install when the customer has a HD dish + receiver. Does this make sense? I told the guy to forget it and that I'd just do it myself. What do you guys think? Am I off my rocker or should having an HD dish and receiver make no difference what so ever??

I'd never install anything HD with flat cable. It's just not good enough to carry the full signal.

Charper DirecTv has removed flat cable from it's approved equipment list. That across the whole board. Anyone still using flat cable for install or upgrades are in violation. Any job Q.C that has flat cable is an automatic fell and chargeback to the HSP company.

Then kudos and apology to the installer; I can admit being wrong on my guess as to why it was not used; BUT I still stand by get it run in a "temp" fashion and then modify with the jumpers because they work JUST FINE. So this post is STILL "Total BS in basket!"

It may be the higher failure rate due to abuse by subs who can't seem to understand that opening and closing that door/window will damage the cable. Flat cable also isn't rated to use for KAKU use.

Well then, we cant have people actually opening and closing doors now can we? How dare they actually use their house as it was designed to be used. Perhaps the real culprit is not the homeowner but the rocket scientists at D* and the "people" here that thought using flat cable in doors and windows was acceptable to begin with.

If I called your remark as an idiot remark I might get banned. If you thought for one second outside youre own little world and realized that it people who rent and the landlord requested no drilling flat cable was their only option. If you subscribe to Dish, or Direct knowing full well that no drilling in the apt, and the tech would have to use flat cable have the phucking sense not to slam the damn door on it repeatedly or just get cable.

Recently had the pleasure of going to a customers appartment to replace the flat cables. I didn't do the job for other reasons. Can't go into here. :) Anyway, we have 12 workorders from DirecTv and who knows how many internal ones since April for this guy. Why? Because he continues to slam his patio door on those cables.

He has had no signal more than he has had signal. I don't know what it will take to convice this guy to stop slamming his door, but, until that happens, someone will keep going out and replacing the cables. Won't be me though. :p
J
I seen a power 4x8 and a power DPP44 cause the flat cable to catch fire. Flat cable are good on window where you don't need to open and close the window. Putting it on sliding doors have a higher rate of a repeat service call.
D
Flat jumpers still work OK. It's just that in most cases they take a beating and have to be service over and over again. Now I'm talking about the average customer that doesn't know anything but plug and play. If you do it yourself you should have no problems. I've done it for years without any issues.

As far a charging more for drilling that's incorrect. In my area the large sub installer is DirecTech and they pay their guys $30.00 an install no matter how long the job takes. For the most part they do lousy work because they are rushing through the jobs to get the volume in. Some other companies pay $80.00 to $100 for installing the dish and the first receiver and $20.00 for each additional receiver but in this case you usually have to be self insured and set up as a business. The rates suck. they've been the same for over 5 years. To make good money doing residential installs you need to be a dealer or do commercial installs where the owner pays you for the work.

I will refrain from name calling and I unlike you will not even use the word in my post. D* no longer allows the flat cable and for good reason. Last time I checked windows and doors had a function. This function ruins the cable eventually.

Evidently the problem is that way way to many installers and customers and a few trolls dont understand the proper way of installing a flat cable in a window or door frame. All the ones that I ever saw that had failed were installed in the impact zone where the door edge or window edge would make forced contact with its frame.

The original flat cable isnt rated for the newer systems and its center conductor is as thin as the really cheap rg59 stuff that came with kmart vcr's. The new flat cable that dishnetwork uses is considerably more heavy duty in its outer casing as well as the connectors and the clips that hold them inplace and the center conductor. Give it time and direct will adopt these new flat cables once the court case is settled.

I thought I would come here and find lots of complaints about the update to the dish anywhere mobile app, but am not seeing any. It used to look just like the desktop webpage. Now you can no longer filter by sports channels or movie channels. Plus that they made it look like a big button telephone and you see fewer channels in the screen which requires more scrolling. Yes I realize you can look at sports then select which sport you want to look at, I just liked being able to see all sporting events in the guide with all other channels being filtered out. Am I alone in the wilderness on this?

I'm not a big fan of the new layout, especially on my Apple TV. It used to look like the old Guide layout on the Hopper 3, but they changed parts of that, too.

I like the new look, it's a lot cleaner. I'm using it on one of those Onn streaming devices when I travel.

Apple has finally released their Apple TV 4K with built-in Siri and a microphone so it can respond to your queries even if you don't have the remote. It also increases in price, to $299. I had been planning on updating my current Apple TV 4K streamers, but that's $600 for the two of them, and that's a pass at this point.

At $299, it had better come with 256 GB of Storage, Gigabit (or better) Ethernet, the latest HDMI tech and standards, and one year of free Apple One. But it probably won't…

Meh. The 4Ks I have will do everything that these do that I need them to do.

Which that's most tech these days for anything released the last four to five years.

It's honestly a testament to how good the previous gen Apple TVs were and are.

Don't tell them that. They'll adopt planned obsolescence.

Not a bit. IMO, Apple's are slow to boot up. Time is about the same with 1st gen and 3rd. Roku runs rings around them in that department. I only reason I stuck, is the Apple infrastructure, which has it's definite advantages. But $300 is a deal breaker. Later, Apple!

they all do that anyways.. ever notice your cell phone slows down when you come up for an upgrade.. :what. apple's been making money off of software and not hardware for a while

No. Makes me wonder if that is Apple or the carrier. I am on pre-paid, so I never get "an upgrade." I still have my old iPhone 11 Pro as a second line, and it runs iOS 27 just fine. My iPhone Air, which is still a current model, doesn't really seem that much faster in regular use. It is better in other ways, and worse in some ways than the 11 Pro (size), but performance really isn't a big differentiator, especially since I replaced the battery in the 11 Pro. If I had gotten enough storage when I originally bought the 11 Pro, it could still be my primary device with no issues.

Yeah, they boot up a bit slower than Roku, but the OS does a lot more, so it makes sense. How often are you booting them up that is a differentiator? Aside from OS updates, mine are on all the time. I will say the ATV4K is generally quicker than the Roku Ultras I have, when it comes to launching apps and responsiveness, not that the Roku is sluggish.

No. Bring in someone new.🤔 Tony is not serious enough for me. Parker is too close to the team and Tim is too young to take over IMO.

I don't think Tim and Tony are that far apart in Age ...

Remember what Tony said to Tim when they first got back together ...
Tony said: I am the New Tony, Tim .... (something to that effect)

Tony has changed, he's been running his Security Business ... I'm sure he has grown up.

Give it time ... your judging the New Tony from the old Tony.

It sounds like Tim won't be around the Team much longer either.

Might be worth a watch when it comes out. Looks like typical big corp against the little guy movie BUT....there is a reason this plot type is so oft repeated, it draws audiences.

If you're going try to read / listen to the book (can't recommend the audio book enough) before this comes out, I'd avoid trailers.

Trailer below, spoiling it to make sure you read the above bold message first. The book / audio book are fantastic. Go into this blind if you can IMO!

Kind of disappointed at how much they show. A lot still to see, but man, some good reveals in the book that are just served up here.

I agree. That can go for pretty much any book vs movie. Back when I was single I would read any Stephen King or John Grisham book I could get my hands on. When you read a book you make up the scenes and characters in your mind.....the movie version always disappoints.
