I had to go for a MRI today and the medical taxi service that I use, some of the drivers have know my kin for years and of my family's former camping biz.

Now I have heard of deer hitting vehicles and vice versa, plus damage done to the vehicle and the eventual death of the deer. But this was a first for what I heard.

One of the drivers, that I knew, (luckily I wasn't in his taxi for today), was driving a female patient for kidney dialysis(sp.), when the driver had an accident that wasn't his fault... a wild turkey hit the windshield of the taxi!

(INSERT ANY TURKEY JOKE HERE, NO REFERENCES TO WILD TURKEY WHISKEY PLEASE!)

This is part of the conversation I heard over the CB on the way back to my place...

Dispatch: The turkey broke the windshield, right?

Driver: It's all gone on one side, but the whole windshield has to be replaced.

Dispatch: That's obvious.

BTW, the woman was shaken up a bit and got another taxi to the clinic, the taxi was towed to where a new windshield to be put on it, the driver is embarressed, don't know if the driver or passenger side was hit... don't know what happened to turkey, either!

On another note, regarding wild turkeys, there was a incident in western Massachusetts I remember from 1997.

There were some people who had outdoor tennis courts at their houses or estates, the property was zoned in some areas and those people who hunted were trying to get special permits or permission from the city to get rid of the turkey gangs that were a menace, when they couldn't play tennis.

Also, at the same time, they were having trouble with coyotes, don't know what happened there.

I got some more info regarding the "wild turkey situation" here in the hills. According to a distant relation of mine, who works in forestry, but has to work with fish & wildlife on occasion, there has been an increase of incidents involving wild turkeys, but the turkey breaking the windshield was a first to him. :o

I once saw a few turkeys get whacked by a snowmobile. :)
I was coming down a hill on a road that makes a huge circle and inside the circle is a field with basically like 2 levels. Half the field is at one flat plane and there's a little rise where it goes up a few feet to the next level. A couple of snowmobilers were cranking along teh bottom level heading for the rise. I could SEE about 30 turkeys on the upper level and I knew that the snowmobilers couldn't see them from their lower vantage point. The first guy skied his sled over the rise and actually came down INTO the turkeys. He musta been as surprised as the turkeys. He had to keep moving as the second guy was right behind him. Anyways.... I stopped. They looked over at me. Both of them laughing like hell. One guy held up 2 turkeys and the other guy held up 1. So they got at least 3 turkeys and nobody got hurt... except the turkeys of course. :)

Same area... different day.... driving and see a turkey apparently getting ready to cross the road. I slow down to about 45 and see him puff up, spread his wings, like he's mad at me for being on his road. Last I saw of him alive was when it LOOKED like he was taking a swipe at my pickup truck as I passed. I heard this *PANG!* like someone whacked a stone with a shovel. What happened was that I hit him in the head with the end of the front bumper. Dropped him instantly. I pulled over as did the guy behind me. I was working and had no way to deal with taking the turkey so he asked if he could have it. I said, "Sure". He was laughing and told me that if I was going to be passing through in a few weeks... deer season would be open. And to let himm know what route I'd be on.
:D

Yep. Only deer I've ever brought down was with a Grand Caravan......

Over the past few weeks, I have had problems connecting to streaming services (Netflix, HBO et al). When I go to the TV's native Channels, I have no problem. The Dish internet troubleshooter shows I have a good internet connection. I'm wondering whether it's an issue with my internet provider or a problem with the Dish software on the Hopper Plus. Anyone else seeing this?

I have a DISH Hopper 3 (Software H713) with Hopper Plus (Software P15403). I have not tried streaming services but I primarily watch TVB Jadeworld international package which is only available by streaming and when I have an issue, I usually have to go to a non-streaming satellite channel first before the streaming channels will work again. What software versions do you have and what is the error message if any are showing on your screen? or is that Dish downloading logo just stuck and never finishes?

It states the average amount they are under water is OVER $7,000. :eek

Personally, I tend to be the type that drives a vehicle for a lot of years....do my own oil changes and other fluid changes. Just replaced the spark plugs and a couple coils. Youtube is great for things like this.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Lately my eight year old Dell laptop has been shutting off even when I have a full battery. I have had to keep it plugged up all the time to keep this from happening. Any idea what is causing this? I replaced the battery about three years ago.

A recalibration might be needed. Even if it shows full, the individual cells may have become unbalaced. And the BMS chip in the battery reports false information to the pc.
Try this. Start it up in the bios/uefi and leave it there until the battery dies and it shuts off.
It might just keep running longer than in Windows. Or run for a short while and shut off.
If it's the first case. Probably just needs a balancing. If the latter, the pack might just be dead.
Not throwing stones but perhaps just a cheaply constructed battery with substandard cells. Could be.

Patience. Keep restarting it in bios/uefi until it won't fire up anymore.
Then plug the charger in and let it complete a full charge. And see what happens. If it's better.
Do the same thing one more time. Run it until it dies dead-dead. Then just let it charge, pc shut off.
When charged, it might be better. It might not be.

There are bench jigs that read the actual BMS and override it to let a tech manually monitor and charge the separate packs. They can also reset any "time bombs" in it that cause an otherwise good pack to show bad.
Maybe Santa will be good to me some year.

You might just need a new battery. Maybe the PC power management chip is going. A Dell common thing.
Leaving a laptop plugged in with a full battery is known to reduce the life. Asus for one recommends that you don't leave the charger plugged in all of the time even when shut down. And setting Windows to charge the battery to 85% instead of 100% increases life.
That's all I got.

I set up a music server for my brother a few years ago. It's basically a small headless computer but it needs to have a DHCP IP address reserved for it in the router settings. This was easy to do in his DSL router. He's switching to Starlink now and I was wondering if these setting are easily accessible in the Starlink router. I'm pretty sure he will be getting the latest V5 router.

If you can't get into the router to reserve an IP address just don't use DHCP on the device that needs connected and assign it to a specific IP address in the network settings.

They are not. Your best bet is to set up a third-party router, attached to the Starlink for your server, that you can get into, like a Linksys, etc

The Starlink V5 Install Kit I just got comes with the Mini Router. It is pretty limited in what it can do. For example, it can provide only one IP subnet at a time, no Guest Network, but it does support the pass-thru to a third-party Router. You can also split the Wi-Fi into separate 5 GHz & 2.4 GHz SSIDs to help some IoT devices that don't support 5 GHz bands to work.

The larger Starlink Router that still comes with the V4 Kit does support a Guest Network with separate IPv4 Subnet, but it's $120 from Starlink. And it still won't do DHCP Reservations.

If you can restrict the DHCP address space to assign addresses to one end of the subnet (i.e. x.x.x.50+), you can manually assign the IP address on pretty much any operating system. This is a default behavior on several popular routers. As the Router Mini only supports 235 devices, I expect that's already done.

Another option is to use a router that supports PoE to power the antenna. This article discusses that option (under PoE Power heading):

Now that I've had the v5 kit with the Mini Router, it's not as bad as I first thought. Yes, no DHCP reservations, but you can set up multiple SSIDs that have separate IPv4 subnets, and like the big brother, you can select from 192.168.x.0/24 or 10.x.0.0/16 (where "x" is 1-4).

You can also split a subnet and have different SSIDs for the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz channels to handle some IoT devices. I haven't discovered what subnet the 2nd NIC on the router assigns, I'm guessing it's the first subnet.
