While reading a local news blog, I came across a topic regarding people whom are being told that E* / D* will not supply locals due to the local stations not allowing them, and they are being told by the stations that dish will not uplink the signals.

So my question is: How do I know who is telling the truth?

Here is the link stating the view from the local station: http://sbynews.blogspot.com/2008/12/vice-president-of-wboc-craig-jahelka.html
Vice President Of WBOC, Craig Jahelka Wants To Clear The Air Waves

Good Morning Joe,

I'm in California this morning on business and haven't been checking your blog as frequently as I do when I'm at home. Therefore I just now noticed the posting from someone who erroneously claims WBOC is misleading people with our informational campaign regarding satellite. I'd like the opportunity to set the record straight for your loyal readers. Neither DirecTV nor Dish Network will uplink the local Salisbury stations. That means folks can't get WMDT, WBOC or FOX 21 on satellite. So satellite customers will also need a rooftop antenna to pick us up and to get the local information we provide each day. There's a lot of confusion regarding this issue, and that's why we're taking the time to educate folks with an on-air campaign. Your previous writer erroneously claims the satellite companies will carry local programming. That's just not true. It is illegal (against federal law) for satellite companies which do not offer local stations to import an out-of-market station to people who can receive our free over-the-air signals unless the local station grants a waiver. A 'waiver' is a request for us to waive our rights to distribute CBS network programming in our area. If it is determined via a signal strength test that a home on Delmarva cannot receive our free over the air signal, we grant a waiver to that home, and the satellite company then provides that home a feed of the CBS station from New York City. The previous post erroneously accuses us of misleading people and asks us to tell the truth. Our informational campaign is factual. I hear every week from people who've chosen to purchase satellite service and only then discover they can't get local channels and can't understand why they don't see ABC or CBS programming. This is a result of national advertising campaigns that claim local channels are available. While they are in most areas, they're not available on satellite here on Delmarva. Your Salisbury TV stations have invested millions of dollars to provide a high definition broadcast signal to our family, friends and neighbors here on Delmarva. We will continue to invest in technology, people and products to serve the public trust. And we will continue to urge the satellite companies to carry our signal. Until the satellite companies step up to the plate, consumers who choose to write monthly checks to them can still watch us, absolutely FREE, and in high definition, with a rooftop antenna.

OMG! I didn't know there was another user from DELAWARE here that was upset about locals from Salisbury!!!!!! Please to meet you! BTW, Where do you live? I find the idiots from Salisbury, at times, think they "know" the correct information when actually, they lack knowledge of current technology. I signed up a few years ago just when Dish had to drop distant local stations. Woke up a day later after being installed to find, they were gone. Dish knew it the entire time, but kept lieing to me. Since then, I've had it out for the company. If it wasn't for some creative work on my end, I would be without locals from philly. Gotta love watching news from a City that you do not live! If I want to know local news, gotta pick up a darn PAPER!

PS. If you do a search for older posts of mine, you'll come acrossed my messages about this topic from day one here. I recently gave Verizon Fios TV a try for two weeks, atleast they have access to Salisbury locals. That was an entire new ball of issues though. Did you see Mediacom cable's present ads about satellite companies lack of local stations?

You could have "moved" to the Baltimore DMA. At least then you would have had some local news content.

What issues did you have with FiOS? Equipment or service?

That is true, but still. I picked Philly because I grew up a hour north of it.

Fios... hmm.... lets start: Its a pain when I call Verizon. At first, It keeps asking you to put in a telephone number even though, I do not have telephone service with them. I have just a Fios Internet account. When I finally get to a real live person, 9 out of 10 times its the wrong department. They transfer me, and again, its usually the wrong department. Sometimes they even say, they cannot transfer me. Then they attempt to tell me the correct number to call and guess what? Its the number I actually dialed. This is my personal experience from 267 times I called this year alone.

Now, onto the service…
HD box at first did not like my tv. I had to go into the service menu on the Motorola box and my TV, change a few settings and all was good. Took a few hours to find how to go into the service menu by researching it online. Phone support was no help at all. They kept saying, my DLP bulb was about to burn out. TV is only two months old.

Onscreen guide was very misleading. Even though, I subscribed to every possible channel, there were still channels I could not get. Example: FX HD. Guide showed it as a channel that was possible to watch, but I kept getting some message I could not understand. Again, phone support did not help me. Searching online, I found that not all HD channels that are available from Verizon are actually shown in every market. Some areas have FX HD, while others do not. If the channel is not available for me to watch, then why show it or how about indicating somewhere it's not available?

Parental controls should not allow adult titles on the screen when turned on. If I had young children, I would not like them to see adult titles. Allow to lock out channels all together. Have the ability for different group favorite channels. Not just one favorite list.

Now, this is one what did it for me…

The onscreen guide information 99 out of 100 times was incorrect. I like to know if the program is new, a rerun, old, and when the original air date occurred. The guide would say, new, when actually the program aired a week before. Example: Pushing Daisies. I saw it a week before but the guide said new. Now, I'm not saying that Dish's onscreen guide is completely current but most of the time it is! Fios TV on the other hand, 99 percent of the time, misled.

My personal view points are from experience. I am not saying that the service may or may not be the same for you. I found that the two weeks with the service, were not very easy.

I am now dealing with a billing problem. They charged me $432.99 for the two weeks I had with the service. Funny looking free first month, free six months of box rental, free install, and money back guarantee. Calling to speak to billing, is again, not easy.

wow, someone else here reads joes blog :)

its been an ongoing discussion on there for a few weeks.

Ive sent e* an email to see what it takes to get a local on there, and pointed them to the issue
i did get lucky and got the free OTA antenna dish was offerign at one time, so i can get locals that way, but with no programming guide.

according to neilson salisbury is the # 144 market for 2009

according to dishuser its the only dma in md, del, va that is not offered

I just found this thread. I live in Delaware and at the moment have both FIOS and Direct TV (I have had Dish in the past). I have seen the adds on WBOC and have really been annoyed by a couple of things. First, I live in both the Philadelpia and Salisbury DMA. When they say I can't get ABC or CBS that is wrong. Many of their viewing area can, they come from Philadelphia. Their add is misleading on this. Also, I can't see why I would watch their channels for anything but the local news. They are not carried by either Comcast or Verizon in HD in Kent County. I watch network programming on the Philly stations. The other thing is they say it is only carried by cable which is a little misleading as FIOS doesn't refer to itself as cable and Verizon carries the channels. I figured Comcast must be helping pay for the commercial.

First, the last time I looked... Philly and Salisbury markets did not over lap. They border each other. 2nd, if you live in the Salisbury market, legally you should not be able to get Philly because of the issue I spoke about with DISH NETWORK and Florida court ruling about distant locals. People like me, came up with a creative way to change our local market but ITS NOT POSSIBLE to ADD. Also, I REALLY love how people over look my comments. I've been complaining about this very subject for a few months now in here and nothing. Now, someone comments about it in a blog and here we go! jeez! If anyone cares to know what actions I took, just say so. I've actually typed up a few personal letters to various companies. And got stupid answers. Reason why I call Salisbury people IDIOTS. Those are the letters I found to be the most annoying.

Actually, I have been keeping up with your post...Not to many people in our DMA so I am sure to read post regarding this issue. I am just glad that more people are getting involved about it. I would like to know what you have done so far, that way i can start my own letter campaign. By the looks of the map you put on the previous post, it appears you are in the millsboro / georgetown area...i am in the Laurel area
G
Actually I am covered under the 2 markets. I live in Dover and that is considered to be in the Philadelphia DMA, yet Salisbury has been able to block me with getting out of market stations when I tried a few years ago. Not sure of the specifics, but when I applied for waivers, that is who blocked me. Anyone in Dover with satellite gets the Philly channels. Both Dish and Direct offer the same "local" channels.

Interesting...if that's the case, then it I wonder how many more of the channels are like this, and what it does to their claims of having more HD channels than anyone else (as discussed in this thead http://www.satelliteguys.us/directv-forum/156478-look-timewarner-cable.html)

As a dollar amount, your DMA isn't worth servicing. Short of this area being included in a broadcasting pack, you won't see signal via satellite. Expect an e-mail to that effect shortly.
mike123abc
It is a small DMA. DBS companies will only carry it if:

1. They have room on the satellite (which they both probably do)
2. They get all the stations on board
3. The local stations just want the basic deal.

So, essentially if one or more of the local stations wants extra cash beyond the usual amount paid they will not view the market as needed to be carried. The bigger markets have a lot more pull.

Just checked my account and it shows mgm+ at 8.00 per month, but that has red line drawn thru it and shows 0.00 per month. But it doesn't say how long this lasts,...... 1 month, 3 months, forever. I called customer service to get an answer, and they said nothing like that exists. Should I add the offer or not? Already paying them too much, but want to take advantage of something free.

Not for me, mines has no mention of how long aka the offer period and the Terms and conditions the $0.00 is good for. All I see is one can lose $5.00 if you decide to remove it before day 31 after you add it to the account.

Do I need a collection of handheld radios, scanners and speed enforcement countermeasures? Nope, but I want them. Very little, if any of the software used to interface with these devices is available on Linux.

For niche use cases, yes I agree. Kali for ethical hacking and security testing, and running a Cacti server for network monitoring are the two things I have experience in. Plus thousands and thousands of other things, but for every day use I just can't see it. The owner of the GMRS repeater that I pay to access is changing the Tx DPL tones tomorrow, while Chirp is available on Linux, the software to program my MXT500 is not.

I run Fedora and Ubuntu in VMWare, honestly I don't care much for the UI of either of them and I don't feel like spending days/weeks to customize the UI to make it look Windows-like when I could just use Windows. The cartoonish dock at the bottom of the screen reminds me of Apple products.
EarDemon
I have no OEM bloat, on CTO devices where I can access the drive, I order it with the smallest allowed drive and crack the device open throw the factory drive in the garbage and put in my own WD Black and install Windows from bootable media. For Windows bloat, I install Windows using the English - World option which limits preinstalled MS bloat.

Windows and Office features I wish to block, like CoPilot and Cortana, macro enabled Office files and others are blocked with GPOs.

Between keeping all software up to date, doing firmware updates, putting IoT devices on a separate VLAN, running Symantec Endpoint (say what you want about it, it's been good to me) and practicing safe hex, I'm vigilant but not paranoid about security.

With NVMe SSDs, my cold boot up time on all devices is under 30 secs as well. Fast boot disabled, BitLocker drive encryption enabled.

I have nothing against Linux, been paying with it on and off since 2004ish, it's just not the right solution for me.
HipKat
it's just not the right solution for me.
As I said above, and, FWIW, I run Win11 Pro and Arch on separate 250 GB NVME drives, using F8 to select which I boot to, with a 1TB SSD for storage, accessible to both OSs and a third formatted Nvme I want to use to learn Kali. It was much faster to setup Arch than it was to strip down Windows. Windows still takes much longer to boot.

What is so fantabulous about the Windows UI? By many accounts, it has been going downhill since Windows 7.

There are Linux desktops that offer Windows or Mac UIs, yet you don't hear much chatter about them outside of questions about when the creators might get sued.

Because it's what I prefer. I know I've said this a few times, I use Open Shell to give me the cascading start menu a la WIN 95 and NT4.0. The only reason I went from Windows Vista to 7 back in the day was because of Classic Shell. I cannot stand anything other than the OG start menu from 30+ years ago. I'm using ExplorerPatcher to give me Windows 10 UI elements of the taskbar and right click context menus.

If you could take a look at how I set up Windows 95, you'd find many similarities to how I use 11.

I could probably use that as a starting point, but I don't like the full size icons. If you have to click on each folder that's also a no-go for me, it has to be cascading.

I used to have Peppermint Linux in a VM, that was about as close as I could get to recreating a Windows NT4.0 style of menu structure, but I could never get it to scale properly in VMWare on a 4K display and eventually gave up.

Whatever the boot up time it's fine with me. The longest part of my bootup is the HP SureStart BIOS integrity check. Once that is done, it's only a few more seconds. I haven't done this reg tweak yet since the reformat, but I switched the bootup animation to the Windows 10 style spinning circle of dots, and it's two and a half rotations. I can live with that.

I hope you don't believe that makes it wonderful (especially when you're using workarounds for Microsoft's malfeasance).

I use LibreOffice as opposed to Microsoft office (even in Windows) because it's UI is like the Office of old, so I'm putting my money where my mouth is (in a manner of speaking). The ribbon was one of the worst ideas to come out Redmond.

Apple has finally released their Apple TV 4K with built-in Siri and a microphone so it can respond to your queries even if you don't have the remote. It also increases in price, to $299. I had been planning on updating my current Apple TV 4K streamers, but that's $600 for the two of them, and that's a pass at this point.

At $299, it had better come with 256 GB of Storage, Gigabit (or better) Ethernet, the latest HDMI tech and standards, and one year of free Apple One. But it probably won't…

Not a bit. IMO, apple's are slow to boot up. Time is about the same with 1st gen and 3rd. Roku runs rings around them in that department. I only stick I with the Apple tv's is the Apple infrastructure, which has it's definite advantages. But $300 is not worth sticking with it. Later, Apple!

24 team playoff seems to be real close.

Are we really that far from a 64-team tournament?

The benefit of the 24 team playoff:
  • All the cartel teams that cartels want in playoff are in playoff
    • Independent of record too! Bonus.
  • MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.
  • I'm out of ideas.
Cons
  • Regular season really doesn't matter now other than the rivalry games
    • Top cartel teams can lose three games and still make the playoff
  • Going to start resting players?
    • The playoff is going to be *checks notes* several games!
    • Resting players could make games dumb.
    • Maybe even restrict NIL players from games played.
  • How much are streaming sub costs going up a month to pay for this?!

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.

We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.

There are 68 Power 4 teams, so eventually they will get there I wouldn't imagine ...

Oh, I Hate the idea ...

It would be different if it was a game that you could play 2 or games each week, but when you only play 1 game a week, the larger playoff is Not a good thing ...

The season has how many games now, is it 14 ... then you want to play another 5 (with more to come) against Top 12 (eventually 24 teams) ... remember, the 5 games in the playoffs will be the hardest games all year and back to back.

For example, IF Ohio State should win it all this year ... they play 5 teams in the Top 25, plus they would play 5 more to win it all, depending on how the ranking shake out and if Bye weeks are given.

Thats 10 Ranked teams ... in one year ...
I don't see that happening very often ...
Edit, Bama plays 4, Georgia plays 3, But Ole Miss plays 5 (didn't expect to see that)

That said, I don't see the Buckeyes winning it all this year.

Seeing theres very little activity in the MLB threads, it wouldn't matter if I posted that the Astros didn't make the Playoffs ...

Theres more NFL info in the Pub section than in the Sports/NFL thread.

IF they go to 24 teams, and it looks like they will soon ....
Do we Really want Teams with 3 and 4 losses in the Playoffs ?
Is a 3-4 Loss team one thats able to win 4-5 more games against Top teams ?

This thread is a place to discuss the 4K events that appear on channel 540. We are getting, at this point, one college football game a week. Let's hope there is more coming.

Hmmm, I'm not seeing anything like those events in our Hopper 3 guide for tonight or Saturday.🙁

I went into the Tools menu and requested a Guide Update. I'll try looking at it after the update completes.

edit — I now have the 148-01 4KFox events for Saturday, but not anything for 148-02 or 148-03 which don't even show as available channels. I do have 148-04 4KUSA.

As I recall you have the Flex package. Do you sub to multisport? -02 is FS1 and -03 is ESPN. -01 is Fox so you would get that if you sub to locals.

As an edit, you need to sub to the National Action Pack at $12 a month to receive those channels.

Which is what is interesting, I see the 4KFox channel on 148-01 but we're not subscribed to our Locals. So why it's coming in is puzzling. I thought that maybe it was a perk for Dish subscribers for the MLB Postseason.

I set a Timer for the Indiana - Ohio State game on Saturday. I'll take advantage of it while I can.

On Tuesday, I recorded the first episodes of the new season's NCIS shows on CBS (Dish provided, not OTA). The new New York series and Origins will both do Auto Skip, but the original, now season 24 does not. What's stranger, when I do a search for NCIS, Origins and New York show the current recording and the next episode it will record, but the original show only shows the current recording and some other channel showing the very first episode of season one. It makes no sense. When I set up the timers, I was able to use search for Origins and New York, but for the original, I had to scroll ahead in the guide until last Tuesday when the show was airing. Then set the timer from there. You can see its timer type is DVR where the other two are Seek. What am I missing?
Thanks!

With both CBS and Fox autohop (as we know) is not enabled for a week..But after 24 hours if you mash the FF button until the red kangaroo shows up in the bottom right you wont overshoot the program. No need to try to figure how long the break is.

Yep. We do this all the time, but we use the 30-sec skip forward button until the red kangaroo shows up. Love this feature.

I'm a bit confused about the recording methods.
Do you havePrime Time Anytime enabled, by doing that you don't have to set recordings for Prime time programs on ABC, CBS, NBC or Fox stations, it's done daily, 7 days a week.
And only 2 weeks recordings are saved, no deletions either.
