Last night my cs8000 locked up while changing channels. No big deal as this seems to happen every couple of weeks and a reboot with the back power switch always fixes it. Well, last night before I could get off the couch to reset the receiver, it started rebooting itself and came up to the initial install screen. Thats right, all my channel and satellite data was gone:eek: On the no-blindscan 8000, this means I have several hours (at least) of work to manually enter settings, transponders and satellites. I thought someone posted recently that one of the newer software versions allowed transponder and channel data to be saved and retrieved. I have the latest 3rd party software installed (I'm always hoping that the ota guide will be added) but cannot find any option to save the channel data. If someone knows how to do this please tell me so next time this happens, it won't be such a pain. BTW, Don't worry about me having the latest 3rd party software since I don't have any dishs set up for 110 or 119.

Hello Shady,
Any of the 3d party firmware, beginning with 12001 can be effectively backed up to your pc over the null modem cable. You have to go into the menu system, and arrow left to find "S/W Upload" .
Hit the Okay button.
The open "CS Upgrade v3.01" on your computer.
Select Mode = "Upload"
Type = " firmware and channels", then
browse to a location and name the file you want to create.
Having done that, click on START and the TV screen should show
Please wait, and the upload will begin.
The resulting file can be reloaded into your cleared CS8000, and it will be complete.
Even my motor settings ( but not saved Diseqc 1.2 positions, since they are stored in the motor) come back . The newer firmware has been a big improvement on this one score.
:)

Don't bother with 3rd Party Firmware, only a few FTA Channels have any Guide info. Usually that info is added by the Provider.

I think he said OTA guide, not FTA guide. The guide info is definately there, but the Coolsat doesn't seem to decode it for some reason, and I keep hoping that a new version will fix that too. The 3rd party firmware is unfortunately the only way to get some of the bugs in these receivers fixed.

I'm curious whether you've had any problems going between the firmware versions that use the 31 sat format and the new 3rd party versions that seem to give you access to the whole sat list? Since the old channel data file definately had those 31 sats as part of the file, and the new version (which I haven't yet looked at with a binary editor) probably doesn't, it made me think that the file format must have changed, and I wasn't comfortable loading channels from one version to another.

I'm also a bit annoyed that instead of giving you a way of creating a new satellite (such as AMC21), and giving it a longitude position, that it seems like you now have to use one of about 4 or 5 "USER" sats. I thought that I would just re-name an unused sat, but you don't seem to be able to change the longitude so it would be in the right place, unless I'm missing something.

Right now I have the Coolsat 8100 (saving channel data is MUCH easier with it, as you do it to a thumb drive), and a Diamond 9000. These two receivers drive me crazy. Both of them will work perfectly for a week or two, then start to go beserk, freezing or rebooting for the Coolsat, and video stopples for the Diamond, then after a week or two they will start working perfectly again. Luckily, about 75% of the time one of the two is working, and during the time that both are not working, I just stream from my Twinhan to a Roku. But it's really annoying that these things just seem to have a mind of their own.

The darn Coolsat HAD been working perfectly, until on Jan 1, I tried watching an ABC feed of the Rose Bowl, and it froze up the Coolsat so bad that even cycling the power switch wouldn't bring it back. I had to disconnect the lnbf coax, and disconnect my hard drive, to get it back to life, and now it's starting to go through it's rebooting thing again.
M
I had the same issue the other day and I have the latest factory software in my 8000. Turned it on and it rebooted and started from scratch. Erased all channels. Alot of the satellites in the dish setup said "null" and would freeze if I selected it. I had no choice but to do a factory reset which sucks for reasons above.

Also, the sat list is outdated with names so renaming them took some time.

You cannot go back to the 31 Sat format without a complete start-over . That is the problem with the 31 Sat format. Can't reload a saved configuration UNLESS you've never changed their sat table from the defaults ( which are ridiculous).

I renamed Galaxy 14 to GAL14/AMC21 and put the Ku tp's on it. If you COULD insert a satellite into their list, it would screw up the index ( which is now apparently by orbital position, instead of 31 place sat table ) and you couldn't restore your old stuff and keep the new AGAIN. Frustrating that it's not perfect, but I like the newer software better than the older fixed table software.

Since my 8100 started rebooting again :( I decided to clear everything out and start over, but this time, I decided to try reloading the old saved channels.
Previously, I had been using the most recent factory firmware, which had been the first factory firmware that my receiver wouldn't reboot on, but then it started rebooting, so I switched to the newest hacker software, which initially didn't reboot, and it also had the new channel configuration rather than the 31 channel deal talked about above.

Well anyway, and I had noticed this once before, but I decided to use the "clear" software to supposedly clear out the memory, then loaded up the most recent factory firmware. When I did this, out of curiosity, I checked, and there were no channels loaded. Then I loaded in the newest hacker software, which was what I was using before my unit started rebooting.

The interesting thing, is that after re-loading the hacker software, my previous channels came back, even though I had supposedly cleared the memory. At first, they didn't work, because even though the channels were there, the satellite parameters (lnbf type and LO freq and switch settings) were not correct, but after I changed them, the channels came back!

This is both a great improvement, and also a bit interesting. It's interesting because I would have thought that doing the "clear" thing would have wiped out any saved channels, and after loading the factory file, they WERE gone. But I guess that the channels were still in there, but in a format that the older firmware couldn't read. I did NOT erase the channels before or after reloading the firmware, so perhaps I should have done that.

Re the great improvement, and why I've been hesitant to try re-loading saved channels even though you've posted that it works, is that with the old 31 channel firmware, the saved channels had all the satellite parameters, and that couldn't be changed. Ie, if I saved a channel with say diseqC port 3, but then went outside, and switched the coax over to port 4, then came back inside thinking that I could go into the Dish setup, and change the sat parameters, and get my channels back, that would not work, because the port 3 info was stored into the channel data. I would have to re-scan the channels, and I'd end up with duplicate (except for switch port) channels, one set which worked, and the other set which didn't work.

Well this looks like now, the channel data is referenced to the satellite settings in the DISH setup. This is the way most other receivers work, and it's a great improvement. I only wish that they would come out with a real factory file that works like this. The most recent one on their web site is like from back in September, and it still uses the old 31 channels format.

Anyway, so far so good with respect to the reloading software fixing the rebooting, at least temporarily. Hasn't rebooted once.... yet. I'm sure it will start again, but if I can recover by reloading software without having to put all my channels back in, that won't be too bad. I've been afraid to load more than just AMC-21 , G25 and G28, which are the main sats I've been watching.

I've asked for a new factory file, in the new format, at the official release site. Maybe, when they feel the need for a new factory file, we'll get one . :)

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Has anyone noticed an FF stutter with 713? I used to be able to hit FF a few times and skip smoothly. After 713 (maybe 712), when I skip forward, there is a definite stutter for as many times as I have pressed FF.

Can anyone check on this and report back? Recorded programs and then press skip forward a few times to see if it's smooth? Normally, it just jumps to the right place after the skips.

On the West Coast, a 40-cent differential is common. It used to be 30 cents before the prices rose above $3.

A "full dollar more" sounds like it may be boat gas (non-alcoholic), which is a whole different discussion.

Ok, I'm bored .... actually - to be more precise - I'm bored of eating the same rotation of 9 or 10 meals that are currently my "go-to" meals. My wife works the long hours - I work from home as and when i feel like it ... which means i generally do most of the cooking ... and so by default - i also make out the shopping list ...

We cook at home 5 or even 6 nights a week - but we always seem to fall back on the same old tried and tested "quick and easy but tastes ok" meals. Week in week out.

Pot Roast - mash and Peas.
Spaghetti
Chicken Pasta in cheese sauce.
Curry & rice
(these are some of mine)

Now it's not that I'm not adventurous in the kitchen ... I'll try anything once or twice ... but we all do it. Unless your name is Martha Stewart or Rachel Ray .. we all eventually fall back on our 8-10 favorite "meals"

So i thought - if we shared some of our own go-to meals with each other ... we might be able to add a few "new" ones to our own arsenal of meals.

So again - I ask you ...

What's for dinner tonight ?

Please give me something new to add to my rotation ... its our weekly shop tomorrow - so i want to pull together a few idea's and try and eat a meal each day next week that I've never had before .. or at least something that is not on my current "go-to" meal plan.

What meal do you always seem to fall back on in your house ? Maybe its something that I've never tried or not had in a while. I need inspiration !! I've got a blank shopping list in front of me - and nothing sounds good .. HELP !

Smoked some salmon on the grill while enjoying some Blue Moon beer. Kinda cool tonight so I fired up the heaters. Here in FL, we fire up heaters once the temps get below 60 :cool As for the salmon, I seared them first, then flipped them off to the side not over the coals and brushed on some lemon pepper marinade followed by some salmon seasoning. Threw some hickory chips on the coals and then closed the vents to about 10% airflow. Yum.

The number-one US state for EV growth, according to the June 22 Yardi report?
Oklahoma.

:eek

It has no ZEV mandates and "minimal" incentives, Yardi says, but also has cheap electricity, high multi-car household rates (so, for example, a non-Lightning Ford F-150 pulls their trailers), and a consumer base willing to switch.

Never realized that Tesla is losing to BYD at manufacturing too, which IMO is Tesla's biggest accomplishment and area of innovation. Nice writeup about the state of play and how we got here though. I have no faith that we're moving any productive direction though sadly, most changes and efforts feel reactionary rather than rooted in making use of the time being bought by tariffs, with few exceptions.

So: how are the cars so cheap, and what is being cut to get there? The best public accounting comes from the Rhodium Group, which compared BYD, Geely, and Leapmotor against Tesla's Chinese operation, a fair comparison because it removes labor costs and shipping from the equation entirely. Their estimate is that BYD builds a car for about $4,700 less than Tesla builds a Model 3 in Shanghai, roughly 15 percent of the Model 3's price. The breakdown is the interesting part. Direct government grants account for about $292 per vehicle, which is 5 percent of the gap. The biggest single factor is vertical integration: BYD makes about 80 percent of its top-tier components in-house, against 37 percent for Tesla, and that eliminates roughly $2,369 per vehicle in supplier markups. Lower overhead, meaning cheaper engineering talent and administrative cost spread across enormous volume, accounts for another $1,719. And BYD pays its suppliers on 155-day terms, against Tesla's 60, which is worth about $214 per car in float. When people say the Chinese advantage is subsidies, the per-vehicle number says otherwise. When people say it is slave wages, the Tesla Shanghai comparison says otherwise too. The advantage is mostly that BYD decided, twenty years ago, to make its own batteries, its own motors, its own power electronics, and its own semiconductors, and Western automakers decided the opposite.
harshness
The EV company to watch out for is SAIC. They seem likely to take over Government Motors at some point.

GM originally struck a JV deal with SAIC to gain access to China. Now SAIC has taken China back with the substantial library of technology GM shared and they're looking to export to Mexico, South America, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific.

Addressed by what you didn't quote. This cycle is as old as computing: compilers, libraries, frameworks each automated the tedious part, and the human work moved up a level. Innovation didn't end; it shifted. And people still make new compilers, libraries or frameworks.

Nobody's forced to hand anything off. Anyone who wants to keep doing it by hand still can, and people who couldn't do it at all now can.

Been reading this thread but not commenting much, primarily because there is so much "news" out there on this topic and it is hard to tell what is real and what is theater.
My biggest problem with AI is that these agents are taught...not necessarily programmed but taught. Well, there's an old saying "garbage in/garbage out". I remember a Joe Rogan show a while back when he had Elon Musk on and they talked about AI and Elon said one of the AIs (can't remember which one, sorry) was asked which was worse, Thermonuclear War or mis-gendering Kaitlyn Jenner and it came back with the answer that mis-gendering was worse. Now forget the politics involved with all the gender stuff we have been subjected to the past few years.....to say that mis-gendering is worse than the killing of hundreds of millions, perhaps billions of human beings.....Kaitlyn Jenner included.....is simply insane not to mention incredibly dangerous.

Agents need appropriate context to make what would be understood as the correct read in a situation like that, and that Gemini answer was a clear miss on that front.

That said, we've also seen Musk (and/or his team) put his thumb on the scale (or just release a very poor product) with his own deployed AI since:

In the end, it's all a tool. Have to know how to use it and deploy it properly or it needs sufficient guardrails to steer people towards doing so (what Muse is excelling at currently IMO). I'm routinely interacting with several agents a day operating various processes locally and in services I use, and there are numerous others silently spun up to perform actions or satisfy requests from my prompts.

Related to earlier discussion in the thread on leveraging local inference: this kind of analysis happening behind the scenes is something everyone will have built into Windows, IMO. Most people won't see all of this, just the results, unless they want to dig into how the fix was chosen. Stuff like this will be standard as agents get local system access baked in, and more of the inference itself moves on-device.

Good thing not everyone will have to learn the hard way then. The same tools can explain why something broke.

This is true of literally anything, though.

Happy to agree to disagree, but I'm already enjoying the dividends personally and helping others at work and at home do the same.

Though, I do have stocks in my portfolio that benefit from data centers.
