Get HD via the Visionsat IV200 PVR Plus (sort of)

I decided to record some of the PBS HD using my Visionsat IV PVR Plus and an 8GB thumb drive. I recorded about 60 seconds and then played the recording through my laptop computer using the Media Player Classic . I got a good picture and sound.

So for those of us who do not have HD, it looks as if you can record an HD channel and then play it back through your computer. So while the receiver technically does not display HD, it does record the video stream.

As an FYI, Media Player Classic is not the same as Windows Media Player. MPC is a free media player. Doa Google search on Media Player Classic to find the latest free version. Sourceforge.net is where I downloaded it.

Lak7, that's what I've been looking for. Actually I've been looking for info on writing the software for it...
Anole, my thought was that if a PC connection could emulate a flash drive to the STB, it would be short work to push that to NAS or iSCSI... I could even see several STBs writing to one source... that would be the ultimate goal...

The Linux "file-system gadget" provides USB Mass Storage emulation. The trick is you need a USB target port, or a host to host cable maybe. A typical PC has all USB host ports.

Assuming you were able to get a mass storage device emulated, the STB would see it as a block level device and expect exclusive control of it. You would not be able to access the data from the Linux side while it was being accessed from the STB. You might get away with some hack to use it read-only on the Linux side, with some constant refreshing of any FAT (the File Allocation Table itself, not the file-system) changes. Otherwise you just simulate an unplug, access the data, re-plug.

What you would really need is to intercept the block level FAT32 file-system stuff and emulate it such that the STB *thinks* it is talking to an exclusive, block-level device, when in fact the FAT is emulated and the file blocks are being mapped to a Linux file directly.

Been out of this for a while and trying to catch up.
Just about ready to order a new MB & CPU to replace my previously fried CPU (too much overclock... don't ask)...
Trying to figure out everything I want it to do and this is looking more and more promising...
Anyway...
Even if this couldn't allow concurrent access to the files, it appears it may be possible to have multiple STBs connected to a PC and recording concurrently... is that a fair assumption or am I just flapping in the breeze here?
With everything going on at work and health issues with my wife, I may never be able to see this thing through... yeesh...

1,000gb drive on Visionsat

Here's the story:

Got a call from a buddy who was mumbling about is new WD 1tb hard drive.
He got it two weeks ago, and hadn't put it into anything yet.
Something like $86 at a local computer fair...?

I suggested he plug it into his Visionsat, and see if it purred.
The drive is SATA II, so he dropped it into his Thermaltake drive docking bay...(google for more info)
It reported 936gb free space, so he proceeded to record on it.
We'll see how it works out, as this is only a first test.
If you are interested and equipped with a large drive and an external drive cabinet, give a try and report.

With the interest in recording Hi Def programming, the larger drive size might be attractive.
We need to try one of his 1.5tb drives next.
If the Visionsat just shows a directory, that'll be encouragement enough!

Very interesting device (the Thermaltake)... Seems like it works in the same way as a drive bay/carrier system, except without the need for a carrier. My only concern would be electro-static damage to the circuit board on the drive due to handling...

one step at a time...

The Thermaltake is for a very special user. Not your Grandma. -

For most usage, I wouldn't recommend it, nor do I personally have a lot of need for one.

What I hope to test within the next week are two external drive USB boxes:
- Veris MX1 by Antec
- Rosewill RX358-S , the house brand of NewEgg
Both take SATA drives, and let you connect USB (for the Visionsat) or eSATA to your computer (for higher speed).

We want to see if the 1tb drive (or the 1.5tb drives) work in these housings.

I'm surprised Walmart hasn't banned this guy from all of their stores. He has been on their CASE the past few months.

Well, the bag can't weigh that much, right? But by law food product packaging must display the actual net weight of the product, i.e., the contents of the container, so by any logic, if not law, a store's stated per-ounce cost should reflect that figure. But since there's not any law regulating shelf statements, a store can say whatever it wants without violating any rules. So I guess the answer is more consumer legislation. Or simply caveat emptor.

I would think that the Vendor/Maker of the product would have a say in it, showing the Correct weight ...
You would think it would be in the contract.

I do look at the ounces of items, but unless its way off, I don't check the math, may have to start now.

Remember when you use to get a 13.5 oz bag of Chips .... Thats a PARTY Size now.

We have a regional ice cream company here that advertises that their ice cream containers are still a full half gallon.

You need to weigh the actual bag...a deli bag weighs less than that but a thick coffee bag is gonna weigh around an ounce...an empty tin can has some weight

Products sold by the ounce, pound, etc, should always be priced for the product only. Only the shipping weight should include the packaging.

Unless the specific product or its packaging is known at the time of weighing, estimating the tare weight for a PoS system is a tall order.

I'm pretty sure that produce bags can't get any thinner.

You certainly don't want to put unbagged produce on a belt, scale, or in a clerk's hands (gloved or not).

You would be thinking wrong when it comes to goods that are sold by weight (meat, produce, nails). Those items typically go on the scale wrapped without an associated tare. The weight only excludes the sticker because it hasn't been printed yet.

Perhaps only for sliced meat and cheese. Salads and similarly "shifty" or "drippy" items are typically weighed in deli cartons of some sort.

My monster burritos (up to two lbs.) are weighed in their foil jackets or paper mache take-out trays, and the jacket/tray is then "sealed" with the printed label as it comes off the printer.

Precision has to give way to practicality in situations like that.

What ever I get out of the Deli is put into a container when I ask them for it, they weight the container and then add the deli product, thats the way its suppose to be, if the rest of the world is screwing you, you should try the place down the street.

1st Big Question is ... How Much Sugar is in it and Sodium and Carbs ...
I' m really not suppose to have Ice Cream, or at least Moderately ....
Depending on the amount of sugar and sodium (don't think theres sodium in it, but Carbs probably is.)

When i was a kid, i used to salivate envisioning me having a Cband dish. It wasn't until about 1995, I installed my first Cband dish, and i remember it took me about 2 weeks to get that dish aligned properly.. This was before internet, and i had to call and talk with people on the phone about advice on how to properly tune the dish. I can't remember the receiver, but it had a UHF remote. I had the satellite receiver in the living room, but i ported it to two TV's, one in the living room and one in the bedroom. It was so nice being able to control the receiver with the remote in the bedroom about 40 feet from the living room. I remember watching Rosanne feeds where it would air the entire week in succession. Nice nostalgia.

DIRECTV Cutting Edge Non Disclosure Agreement

In order to participate in any Cutting Edge testing, you must sign a Non Disclosure Agreement (NDA). Attached are a .docx (Microsoft Word) and PDF version of the latest DirecTV NDA. I found it easiest to complete the .docx version then paste a photo or scan image of my signature, cropped closely to just the signature into it as a picture. Then set Word to wrap text around the picture so that the picture follows the text "Signature".

People who have better PDF tools than I do may prefer that version.

When you apply for any Cutting Edge testing, you will be told how to send the signed copy.

Any NDA you have signed before is still valid for the testing you have been and hopefully still are doing. The new NDA forms are ror new CE testers and new categories of CE testing. They have been placed here so that people who volunteer for any CE testing have access to them.

Still with Choice package? My stepdad says when the game started he got black screen and something to do with not the right package.
He had the Twins the last 2 years and I saw the Wild screen on 668-1 when I was there a few weeks ago.

There were some technical issues during the pregame, where 668 was showing the Pacers feed instead of the Timberwolves feed until a few minutes before the game.

On the stream API it looks like some areas need the Sports Pack, what's his zip code?

I went into the Tools menu and requested a Guide Update. I'll try looking at it after the update completes.

edit — I now have the 148-01 4KFox events for Saturday, but not anything for 148-02 or 148-03 which don't even show as available channels. I do have 148-04 4KUSA.

As I recall you have the Flex package. Do you sub to multisport? -02 is FS1 and -03 is ESPN. -01 is Fox so you would get that if you sub to locals.

As an edit, you need to sub to the National Action Pack at $12 a month to receive those channels.

Which is what is interesting, I see the 4KFox channel on 148-01 but we're not subscribed to our Locals. So why it's coming in is puzzling. I thought that maybe it was a perk for Dish subscribers for the MLB Postseason.

I set a Timer for the Indiana - Ohio State game on Saturday. I'll take advantage of it while I can.

Even though it didn't work out for the Hoosiers, this event recorded and I was able to watch it in full 4K HDR.

That is a misnomer. In the old days you subscribed to telephone service. That included the telephone line and one telephone. An extension cost $1 a month extra. So that $14,000 over 42 years was for the service not the leased telephone. There is no way they paid $28 a month for 42 years for a leased telephone.
