I've finally set a deadline for myself. If I don't hear anything positive about the 522 being released to current subscribers, I'm switching on Monday.
I'm in the same boat and am very close to the same decision. I've waited forever for this 522 (I can imagine how those waiting for a 921 feel) and it financially doesn't make any sense to stay with E* any longer when I can get two DirecTivos for very cheap.

I've been with Dish since 1996 and still have a Dishplayer (with $9.99/mo fee), so that should give a clue as to my previous loyalty. Dish just now made my locals available ($5.99/mo), but why do that when I can get them for $1 more per month from DirecTV, on a 'smaller dish' to boot?

I'm the sort of guy that cheers for an underdog... roots for the little guy, sides with the upstart, etc. and that's why in 1996 I went ahead and went with Dish instead of DirecTV. I've really, really tried to ride out the 'hard times' and keep my DishNetwork service, but it has really become difficult to do so. It appears to me that Charlie (and/or the people he hires) haven't a clue about how to manage good customer service or product development and releases.

Circus: The 921 gets "Best of Show" at some electronics show over a year ago, but the product still isn't out. (Yeah, I know they probably 'bought' their award but that's not my point - if you unveil somthing at a show you should be pretty close to shipping it.)

Circus: The 322 and 522 should be flying out into the hands of loyal Dish customers eager to upgrade to the newest gear, but instead we hear "Sorry, DHP customers only" and even then we don't know when the DHPers can get these. Someone in this forum claims hearing a radio commercial for the 522, but there's still no info about it on the Dish website.

Circus: Dish runs a fire sale on the 6000s in prep for rolling out the 811s. The 6000s have pretty much dried up, but where are the 811s?

Circus: Dish rolls out the SuperDish and it turns out that some sections of the country cannot receive the 105 bird on it? Sounds like a major screwup to me!

Circus: Loyal customers eagerly tune in to the next 'Charlie Chat' for full details on new equipment and offerings but instead get to view mere fluff instead of substance, or at least an explanation. Why bother?

All of the above 'circus' items gives me increasing dobut that Dish has a clue about what they are doing. For the size of the company and their revenues they shouldn't be making stupid mistakes such as this.

I know this sounds like the typical "I'm gonna switch from Dish to DirecTV" whiner post, but when customers that are extremely loyal and have been your customer since 1996 and are ready to switch to your competitor you are doing something seriously, seriously wrong in the way you are conducting your business.

I sense that Dish does not place much importance in retaining customers, only in cultivating new ones- at least that's how it seems to me.

I worked 18 years for a computer company that was at one time 2nd only to IBM in revenues. They were incredibly innovative, especially in the area of networking (ever hear of Ethernet? They co-developed it with Xerox and Intel). They eventually became fat with success and complacent- they began to suffer from major managment incompetence and began to focus on pleasing Wall Street analysts instead of focusing on good product development and customer support. They began a downward sprial of reactive, self-inflicted deathly decisions until they were only a thin shell of their former self. Another company (Compaq) bought the remnants in 1998 and they were gone from the face of the earth. (And, ironically, Compaq is now gone as well - swallowed up by HP).

Mr. Ergen, you are not imune to an identical fate with your company.

Well I guess I am really talking about the several month string out Dish did with the HD package and the promice of additional programming with a 8PSK module. Then the SuperDish announcement.

I have no desire to continue to pay for upgrades for my 6000. If Superdish is a $200.00+ upgrade for me, (since I no longer subscribe to a AT ?? package) I will sell it.
V
It's rumored in another topic that the 811 is delayed. This is not so big a deal... those wanting an 811 simply (per Tampa8) can just wait longer, right?
Tampa8
Sorry, I still say so what. Maybe Dish has listened to us and is making sure all the bugs are out of it. May not even be true. I say this not in a mean way - but it seems like you are looking for an excuse to get another service. Just briefly looking over some of the other forums, you can find different complaints about Direct just as well. I called a neighbor who has Direct and asked if he has HD. He does not, and why? He had it, and it was in his words horrible compared to OTA. It had pixelization and was usually not as vivid as OTA in his words. He is getting Dish when his contract is over. That is just one person so I would not claim Direct has bad HD PQ based on just that, but it just shows there are good and bad for each service.
I do say there is no need to be unhappy - so if Direct is really better for you I would do the same if I were in your shoes and switch.
V
Well, I just made the leap. I want to stress that my case is somewhat peculiar in that I needed to go to SuperDish to get locals and that meant purchase of a SD and a new DVR and new regular receiver.

To get rid of the old Dishplayer 7200 and model 5000 and to go with TWO HDVR2 dual-tuner DVRs and one additional receiver will net me +$280 (after selling old gear on eBay).

For programming that I want (including locals) it will cost me $9 less per month than with Dish, and that's with one more receiver (3 now instead of 2).

This is just the math part... I'm leaving out that my two new DVRs have Tivo software and are readily upgradable.

Let me make this clear: I've been waiting and wanting a model 522 (or two) for a long time. I think that multi-tvs from one box is an innovative concept and leading-edge stuff and I still think so. Is it worth waiting for? Not for me it isn't, not any longer with the deals I can get on DirecTV gear.

If Dish could have come out and said when they would make 522s available to the current subscribers and at what price they might have held me. I would have to think long and hard about investing $800 (for two 522s, based on rumored retail price) plus a SuperDish. Or I may have been willing to switch to a DHP and commit to a year of service, but doing that is a no-no for current subscribers, right?

I may be back in a year Charlie if your grass is greener then. Right now, it looks kind of brown to me.
V
This topic has convinced me that I indeed made the right move (for me anyway): the 522 may not have "record two shows at once" functionality until summer of 2004.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

LOL. It depends if the person saw it during the years when they were actually still available which is 1968 to 1983 meaning the person could be 43-58 years old or they can even be a few years old if they learned to read and write at a young age and actually saw a telephone with that label somewhere recently just like even here in San Francisco, payphone still exist physically in public places but whether they can be used or not is a different issue. I opened my Radio Shack in Sept 1984 and right about that time they did the whole deregulation thing with the phone companies. I bought TONS of those phones that had been refurbished with a new outer shell. You could throw one of those out of a 3 story high window and it would still work.
That was an interesting time in history. I would have older customers come in and ask about phones.....they were terrified that they were going to get into trouble hooking up a second phone without the phone company knowing about it. One of the funniest episodes of WKRP was the one where Johnny thought the cops were showing up because they had an unregistered phone. I guess younger folks can't conceive of a time when you were limited to the number of phones you could have in your house....and limited to the length of the cord 🤣

Speaking about cords, I actually did drop a Trimline phone from probably 3 feet high on the floor when I was about 10 or so and it caused a small crack, this was the one with the modular jacks and it was hooked up with I think a 50 ft or longer RJ11C cable from Radio Shack. I still use the phone today connected to a Obi VoIP adapter and the cord is my custom made 6 position RJ11C, not sure of the official name for it without looking it up and Belden MediaTwist Crescent shaped Cat6+ cable.

My Wife was recently in an antique store and saw a rotary desk phone and it had one of those sticker overlays that had a business listed with phone number under each number on the dial. She looked closer and it had my old Radio Shack listed under the 8...she bought it. Pretty cool keepsake. Back then I rented vhs movies as well so I had it listed as Radio Shack / Movie Gallery and then the phone number.

Now in the Hornets and Hurricanes markets we just get the TV promise screen. But Directv still charges sports fee I am assuming.
Luckily my DTV stream package doesn't have a rsn fee. Figure DTV that always says is the leader in sports would have come to an agreement by now.

Greenville-New Bern is $11.99 for MASN (Orioles) and Nationals
Raleigh is $11.99 for MASN and Nationals
Charlotte is $12.99 for BravesVision, MASN, Nationals and Reds

The fee in NC also includes the higher in state rate they have to pay for ACCN. Down in SC the fee is $15.99 as they are also a SEC state.
I'm not sure if they're doing it with those teams, but in some markets they also use the fee to cover the additional cost they have to pay for independents and MyNet stations that picked up full season NHL and NBA rights.

If you go to the TVPromise site, you'll likely be able to get a credit for not getting the Hurricanes and additional Hornets games that air on WITN-D2

Figure DTV that always says is the leader in sports would have come to an agreement by now.
Part of the hold out might be the packaging and price for outer areas like how the Thunder needs sports pack for other states. Hopefully they are also pushing for a guarantee from the teams that they would require whoever wins their local broadcasting rights in 2028 to negotiate with MVPDs. Commercial distribution rights are probably a factor too.

I'm guessing they got a deep discount for the Clippers based on how long it took them to officially announce ClipperVision and their KTLA simulcasts after they were basically handed a multi-year draft death penalty.

The Predators and Pistons channels are using feeds supplied by Scripps Sports

The Heat likely depends on whoever they sign for the Fort Myers DMA, as there's no point in paying a high price for the Heat just for that DMA when WPLG is streaming it for free on their app and website for viewers in the Miami DMA, and they already carry the West Palm Beach station.

I tried this with both the Hurricanes and Hornets since I'm in upstate SC, and wasn't offered any kind of credit by the site. It's not a huge deal to me as I can pick up WSOC/WAXN over the air at my location even though I'm outside the Charlotte market.

I thought the NBA TV contracts were short term as the NBA is trying to get all of the teams into in an all in one streaming app?

I was reading this article

That said this-
Last summer, for the first time, streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime claimed the largest share of the television viewing audience, surpassing both cable and broadcast TV. Streaming captured 34.8 percent of July viewers, according to Nielsen data, compared to 34.4 percent for cable and 21.6 percent for broadcast.

And then, sometime in the second half of 2022, cord-cutters became the majority. The share of cable and satellite television subscribers dipped to 48 percent, according to a report from Samba TV, a television technology company.

Now I do not consider those with YTTV and the likes, Cord Cutters, but they still do not have Traditional Cable/Satellite delivered Live TV, so I decided to do the math.

There are, now, 129 Million Households in the United States.

In 2015, there were 100 Million Cable/Sat Subscribers , no streaming Live TV Service.

Today, there are 66 Million Live TV subscribers, including Cable, Satellite and Streaming.

Roughly, Streaming Live TV has 14 Million subs including all of them.

So that means, Cable/Satellite now has, roughly, 51 Million Households

So in just 8 years, lost 49% of their subscribers and by the end of this year, expected sub count to be, roughly, 45 million households.

That means a total loss of 55% since 2015 at the end of 2023.

But out of 129 Million households, 45 million will mean only 35% will get Cable/Satellite Delivered Live TV by the end of 2023.

Imagine what 2024 will be like.

Some interesting information was in this article-

This first-

The total pay-TV sector (traditional service providers and virtual MVPDs) shed 885,000 subscribers in Q2 2026

So with the loss of 2.03 Million in the first quarter, already at 2.915 Million gone this year, two quarters left to report.

#2-

The segment ended Q2 with 61.51 million subs comprising 27.5 million cable video subs, 21.42 million vMVPD customers, 9.56 million satellite TV customers, and 3.01 million telco TV subs.

There are approximately 133.97 million households in the United States, according to recent YCharts US Households Data from mid-2026.

That means more than 72 Million households do not have a paid live TV service, about 54% of the total.

What is worse, 7 years ago, paid live TV had over 80% of the population subscribing ( about 100 Million), almost all were Cable/Satellite customers.

Today, only about 37 Million subscribe to Cable/Satellite, less than 28% of our population.

#3-

At one time, Satellite TV (Dish and DirecTV), had about 34 Million subscribers added together, now, 9.56 Million.

That is over a 70% loss for those who subscribe to Satellite TV.

For Cable TV, not as bad, since they have broadband to help against the losses ( bundles), but as more options appear ( 5G, fiber, starlink, etc), I expect a big increase in those leaving cable.

Also expect YTTV to really start gaining even more subscribers, for those who still wish to have a live TV service, based on price point and it is a really great service.

Looks like Optimum Communications ( formerly CableVision) is collapsing, due to it's high debt, lenders/creditors are taking over-

Well, the bag can't weigh that much, right? But by law food product packaging must display the actual net weight of the product, i.e., the contents of the container, so by any logic, if not law, a store's stated per-ounce cost should reflect that figure. But since there's not any law regulating shelf statements, a store can say whatever it wants without violating any rules. So I guess the answer is more consumer legislation. Or simply caveat emptor.

Unless the specific product or its packaging is known at the time of weighing, estimating the tare weight for a PoS system is a tall order.

I'm pretty sure that produce bags can't get any thinner. ;)

You certainly don't want to put unbagged produce on a belt, scale, or in a clerk's hands (gloved or not).

I can't BELIEVE this is being such a difficult subject. The issue isn't the price....it's the advertised price per ounce. A lot of shoppers, myself included, use the price per ounce in determining which is the better value....with that number being inaccurate, it can trick someone into thinking that one product cost less per ounce than a competing product. Is this a crime?...above my pay grade. Is it dishonest? Yes.

Comcast is the first to report, with a massive 274,000 loss in video subscribers.

In the 3Q of 2016, Comcast had 21.42 million video subscribers and was the #1 provider, now at 10.39 million and is the #3 Provider, YTTV is #2 ( who also surpassed DirecTV-8 Million and Dish-under 5 Million), Charter/Spectrum is #1.
