Greetings,

I am new to these forums but have been with Dish for about 5 years now. Anyway, I live in Gainesville Florida, and we were supposed to pick up ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX in HD as of yesterday. When I go to the Dish site and type in my address, it shows all the stations (HD) as available, and gives the channel numbers as 5251, 5252, 5253, aned 5254. These channels are not showing on my guide, even with the "All Channels" selected. Any idea why this may happen? Do I need to do anything special to get these? Usually when new channels are added, they just appear. Any suggestions? Cheers!

I'm in the same boat as the original poster. Any idea if they would have originally set me up on 61.5 because line of sight to 129 wasn't available? How do I determine if 129 is available without paying $50 for a service call?

Until the launch of Ciel-2 in February, 129 was not available for most of Florida. That's probably why you have 61.5
If you have a compass, stand behind the 119/110 dish and look about 10 degrees to the right, then approximately 29 degrees elevation (assuming you are in or near Gainesville)
If there are no trees or anything close to that spot in the sky, you should be fine.

I spent this past weekend (May 2009) struggling with satellite 129 from the east coast of central Florida. I have a new Dish 1000.2 and a VIP 211 receiver. No joy at all. 110 and 119 have good signal strength >75. Not a peep out of Sat 129, regardless of where I pointed the dish.

I even bought a DISH Pro 44 Switch. It made no difference at all.

I sure would like to hear solutions from other Florida residents.

Looking at a map, the East Coast of Central Florida would seem to be in or about Merritt Island. I'm forced to guess you've got the wrong dish based on your decidedly vague description of where you live. It is customary to offer your zip code if you don't want to give up the name of the town.

Note that this doesn't mean that you won't be able to pick up 129W, just that you should be going after a different set of satellites that includes 61.5W. From a quick scan of all DMAs on the East Coast of Florida, they all use Eastern Arc satellites (Dish 1000.4).

Sorry for the location omission. In reading the zip code satellite dish pointing charts, I felt I had given enough information on my location.

The zip is 32905 Palm Bay, FL

I spoke to my brother this morning who lives 150 miles south of me (33428 zip). He has the same antenna and is receiving 110,118 and 119 but he subscribes to some international channels.

As I posted earlier, no matter what I tried in aiming or swapping switches, 110 and 119 was all I could "see". I'm at work now, but to the best of my recollection (I ran this enough times...(sigh)) after running 'check switch' 50 times - 110, and 119 were always there. The third LNB indicated "conn" instead of a satellite number. Using the satellite dish pointing screen in the VIP211 and setting it it for either satellite 118 or 229, no signal strength was ever indicated.

I bought this particular antenna to avoid installing 2 antennas which is what 61.4 would require. I spent two days on this and am at a loss as to why I failed. .

When you look at the Check Switch table, Port 1 should be the 119, Port 2, the 110, and Port 3, the 129. If Port 1 and Port 3 show 110 and 119, the dish is misaligned. You would be receiving 119 through the leftmost LNB (standing behind the dish) which is the 129 LNB and receiving 110 through the center LNB which is the 119 LNB. If Port 1 and Port 2 correctly show 119 and 110 and nothing shows for Port 3, there is likely a problem with the 129 LNB, maybe a bad cable connection or just a bad LNB. I suppose it would be possible for skew to be off just enough to be able to receive 110 and 119 but not 129, but I think it is unlikely.

That's definitely an designated an eastern arc DMA. A 1000.4 dish would have worked there as a one-dish solution as long as you have all mpeg4 ViP receivers. I didn't look to see if that FL market was yet mirrored on 129. I know they reserved transponder space for more FL markets on 129 but I don't think they've added any recently although I could be wrong.

That's interesting.... using the skew I would have thought the highest satellite (110) would be on the uppermost LNB (port 1). My current configuration is the Dish 1000.2 running directly to the VIP211 without the DPP44 switch. The single cable running to the dish is connected to connection 1 on the antenna which is the uppermost LNB. This was the configuration I had the antenna in when I quit yesterday.

In this configuration the check switch screen shows Port 1 as 110 , Port 2 as "conn" and Port 3 as 119. Evidently I'm misaligned. I'll try it again tonight.
O
Anyone with a dish pointed at 61.5 should use it for 129, this will give better signal than a 1000.2 and can be moved back if no LOC for 129 at location of 110/119 dish
harshness
The zip is 32905 Palm Bay, FL
The TV DMA for Palm Bay is Orlando which is uniquely a 61.5W market. 129W would not serve your needs.

The usual reason for an aiming failure is using bad pointing parameters. The most likely culprit is the elevation.

The generic numbers for your zip code (Palm Bay Rd at Troutman Blvd.) according to dishpointer.com are:

Az: 245.3 magnetic El: 36.8 Skew: 139.4.

Understand that everything is reversed by the reflector. The easternmost LNB picks up the westernmost satellite and the "highest" LNB picks up the "lowest" satellite.

The parameters take all the guesswork, speculation and faulty reasoning out of the picture. I've found that the parameters from the receiver tables generally point too low and don't have the current magnetic declination factors figured in.

Self-installing is over-rated. DISH will typically demand a professional installation when moving from SD to HD and your attempted installation would be summarily rejected because it doesn't provide access to your HD locals.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Continuing the Kilauea thread in the Pub here. Perhaps the Iceland one too next time there's remarkable activity.

Currently there is precursory lava flowing into the crater, leading to the next episode that'll probably start within the next day.

You can see the pace of inflation / deflation here. It serves as the primary predictor for when the expect the eruptions, which coincide w/ inflation turning into significant deflation and last for several hours on average with significant fountaining.

Wife and I like the AfarTV feeds, for the discussion along w/ them, though they're otherwise just mirrors of the official USGS feeds.

Oooo, quite the show now. All three vents have doming and overflows. The cone that built up around the North vent lost its upper quarter at 02:50 Oct 17 and is now spewing lava at a healthy rate. Don't know if I would say it's a fountain, but it's close.

edit: The USGS has called the official start of Episode 55 as starting at 03:19 HST Oct 17, 2026:

Alert Level: WATCH, Color Code: ORANGE 2026-10-17 13:43:56 UTC
HVO/USGS Volcanic Activity Notice

Volcano: Kilauea (VNUM #332010)

Current Volcano Alert Level: WATCH
Current Aviation Color Code: ORANGE

Issued: Saturday, October 17, 2026, 3:43 AM HST
Source: Hawaiian Volcano Observatory
Notice Number: 2026/H488
Location: N 19 deg 25 min W 155 deg 17 min
Elevation: 4091 ft (1247 m)
Area: Hawaii

Summary: Episode 55 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption began at 3:19 AM HST on October 17, 2026.

Volcanic Activity:
Episode 55 of lava fountaining in Halemaʻumaʻu began at the summit of Kīlauea began at 3:19 AM HST on October 17, 2026.

Fountain heights are relatively low at about 100-150 feet (30-45 m), and it is not clear whether this episode will evolve to the same heights as previous episodes. Continuous overflows from the vents began yesterday, October 16, just before 6 a.m. HST and transitioned into episode 55 fountains at 3:19 a.m. HST this morning. The current forecast is for winds are blowing from the north-northeast direction, which suggests that volcanic gas emissions and volcanic material may be distributed to the south-southwest direction from Halemaʻumaʻu.
  • All eruptive vents and lava flows are confined to Halemaʻumaʻu crater within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Tephra fall from volcanic ash clouds is greatest within 3 miles (5 km) of the vents, lighter ash and Pele's Hair may stay suspended for large distances from the vents.
Foxbat
Kīlauea seems to be returning to the "normal" eruption script, impressive fountaining from the North Vent. For once, the V2 Cam has the best overall shot:
IMG_1535.webp
The lava flows have covered a good portion of the Halemaʻumaʻu crater floor.

Since it was already "paid" for, I spent the two hours of my time watching the John Cena action movie on Apple TV, "Matchbox The Movie" even though the reviews were brutal. It was better than I expected, so I didn't feel like I had wasted an afternoon watching it. But it felt like another "Reacher"/"Neghley"/"Mission: Impossible"/"Fast & Furious" crash and blow stuff up with lots of automatic gunfire mixed in movie featuring covert CIA operatives.

I don't think we'll get a follow-up movie from this. I expect Mattel will have other toy lines to exploit.

Swaggerty's isn't too bad, sausage prices are lower per lb than making my own from pork butts right now so I've been buying JC Potter or Owen lately.
(Swaggerty's at Sam's is pre cut, I usually partially freeze the rolls and cut with my slicer and vacuum seal on parchment paper)

I don't think Tim and Tony are that far apart in Age ...

Remember what Tony said to Tim when they first got back together ...
Tony said: I am the New Tony, Tim .... (something to that effect)

Tony has changed, he's been running his Security Business ... I'm sure he has grown up.

Give it time ... your judging the New Tony from the old Tony.

It sounds like Tim won't be around the Team much longer either.

I'm curious how they are going to implement Tony into Origins (If they do) ...
Tony was introduced to Gibbs and the team, on NCIS, which makes it the Mothership side of things, he worked in Baltimore prior to NCIS, NO mention when they met that anyone had known one another ...
