1. Is there any activation fee?
2. Is there any ppv on 4dtv?
3. Do most providers take checks/money orders? I dont have a debit card
4. Can 4dtv be gotten on a 6 footer well?

1. Oklahoma PBS...thats it
...

After reading the above, I was thinking about Ku DCII stuff {besides the Canadian stuff that the 4DTV'ers like to avoid and some Mexican stuff} , I started thinking about 2 transponders that I used to watch occasionally, and I've lost track of.
First, the PBS schedule 512, now at 12169H, used to go from DVB mode to DCII mode many afternoons, both when PBS was on AMC3, and also after they switched to AMC21. I think this was supposed to just be temporary for some facilities that hadn't switched over to DVB yet, but I wasn't sure if that was still occurring or not? To the DVB viewer, it would just look like the transponder went down, and whenever I'd see that happen, I'd switch to DCII, and the DCII feed would be there. Anyway, just curious whether they are still doing that or not?

Secondly, the OTHER PBS type transponder that stayed in DCII mode after PBS switched to DVB was the Annenberg CPB channel on AMC3. When PBS switched to AMC21, I was expecting to see it pop on on AMC21 in DVB mode, but never did. I see a few peaks on AMC21 that I can't seem to lock, so I was wondering if perhaps they made the switch too, and might be in DCII mode. It would be nice to have SOME use for my aging 4200, which I think I paid $1200 for when it was new. {It was kind of sad to buy my 2nd one on ebay for $40.}
Anyway, does anyone know if CPB made the transition and if they are in DCII mode? {Don't need any parameters, just curious whether it's worth looking for them.}

Annenberg use to be on AMC3 but is now gone. I think they dropped satellite coverage

i had a 4dtv at one time
i also had my 10 foot dish tracking the arc well, and got good signal on c and ku sats
however, the 4dtv i had could never obtain a signal. so that makes me a little weary of buying another one

Wonder how they uplink their programming to PBS now? I guess maybe fiberoptic or something?
When they were still on AMC3, after PBS left DCII, except for the part time sched 512, Annenberg was my way of getting the PBS VCT back in my 4200, ie if I'd go surfing for other signals, and wanted to get back to where I could pick up 512 quickly.

I got my DSR-4200V about a year ago, off eBay for 22 bucks with the remote! I used it for GPB on AMC3, which lasted till about the middle of January when the signal went dark.
Now it's in use daily again, programmed for something on G-14...:music

Yeah, that's a good use I guess. I kept promising my wife to set her up a music only receiver, but I never did. She finally bought a Sirius radio system, although I have been the main user of that, using if for home team radio coverage of NFL games, which is a challenge to sync up to satellite video, since it's delayed more than 20 seconds.
I have used the 4200 on Oklahoma PBS, but the last time I went there, there was no VCT on the transponder, which was wierd. Ie, I'd lock the signal, but it would just sit there, and no channels would load. Ie to use the 4200, you need to be able to download a VCT from the transponder. I guess I should try that again, as it may have just been a temporary issue.
It was sad to see GPTV go away. My 4200 was originally authorized by GPTV, many years ago, and I was still picking up authorization hits from them right up to when they went dark. Ie to use the 4200 for FP channels, the receiver had to have been authorized at some point in time, so some people on a mailing list I was on at the time got someone at GPB to insert the group's unit IDs into the system. They must have left the unit's ID# in their system for 12 years, not knowing who they were for.

I know on the 4DTV units it seems like you have to rock the channel (up/down) and let it sit until it finally locks onto OETA sometimes taking up to a minute to load
B.J.
I know on the 4DTV units it seems like you have to rock the channel (up/down) and let it sit until it finally locks onto OETA sometimes taking up to a minute to load

I'm guessing that what you're describing is that if the lnb freq is off a bit, that on those narrow SR transponders, the 4DTV must have to search a bit until it finds it. But what I was seeing was more like trying to scan a hidden channel like the CW, where the receiver doesn't have any idea of what the channel parameters are, because for a 4200 it gets the parameters from the VCT. I assume that OETA is in the 4DTV's channel map, so you'd get the parameters from that.
Usually when I lock a channel with the 4200, I can go to a screen where I can observe the VCT loading, and see channels appear, but the last time I went to OETA, I must have waited for a good 45 minutes, and never saw any channels load in. All the while, I had a good strong lock on the transponder. It was really wierd.
I think I'll go try to tune that in again, to see if it works now. It's been nearly a year since I tried.

EDIT: Well I just tried, and the same thing happened. I'd appreciate confirmation from someone else with a 4200.
When this happened before, someone on satforums said that leaving out the VCT was an option on the uplink equipment, so I thought that perhaps it had been done accidently, and that sooner or later one of the intended recipients would complain, and they'd fix it, but I guess that never happened.
It's really strange, as this is the only DCII transponder that I've been able to lock, that wouldn't download a VCT. If I had just left it on this transponder more than a year ago, I'd be able to view the channel now, but without a VCT, I'm stuck.
I guess I'll leave it on that transponder for a few hours, and hope that they eventually upload a VCT.

You need to do a factory reset...if there's an old VCT in there, it will not load a new one. It's also not like a DSR-410, meaning the factory reset will NOT erase previous authorizations, only the channel maps. Here's a link I found helpful: DSR4200-info Mine worked for GPB as soon as I reset it, and had to do it again for the music service it's on now.:)

No, I definately did a factory reset. I always do a factory reset before changing VCTs. I'm curious whether this transponder is working for you??? I'm pretty sure that I tried it on both of my 4200s the last time, and both did the same thing, and I then moved both to another transponder, and they worked OK. Something different about that transponder. {and BTW, that's a page in MY own web site you quoted, so I'm familiar with it :-) That site will be going away within a month, but I hope to relocate it when I get time.}

...Then I have no clue why, other than something funky with that signal.

Can't really check that, after GPB left Ku, I saw nothing DCII left on Ku, so the 4200 got wired in on my 7.5ft dish for C-band only, separate from my Ku dishes, which are connected to my DVB system.

Is there any power coming out of the LNB connector on the back of the 4DTV unit? What model do you have?

It almost sounds to me like the circuit that powers the LNB may be shot. A quick workaround would be to put an FTA receiver that has LNB pass-thru capability into the loop. Dish -> FTA Receiver -> 4DTV unit. Then maybe the FTA receiver can provide the needed power to the LNB so that the 4DTV receiver can get signal. ?

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

The number-one US state for EV growth, according to the June 22 Yardi report?
Oklahoma.

:eek

It has no ZEV mandates and "minimal" incentives, Yardi says, but also has cheap electricity, high multi-car household rates (so, for example, a non-Lightning Ford F-150 pulls their trailers), and a consumer base willing to switch.

Never realized that Tesla is losing to BYD at manufacturing too, which IMO is Tesla's biggest accomplishment and area of innovation. Nice writeup about the state of play and how we got here though. I have no faith that we're moving any productive direction though sadly, most changes and efforts feel reactionary rather than rooted in making use of the time being bought by tariffs, with few exceptions.

So: how are the cars so cheap, and what is being cut to get there? The best public accounting comes from the Rhodium Group, which compared BYD, Geely, and Leapmotor against Tesla's Chinese operation, a fair comparison because it removes labor costs and shipping from the equation entirely. Their estimate is that BYD builds a car for about $4,700 less than Tesla builds a Model 3 in Shanghai, roughly 15 percent of the Model 3's price. The breakdown is the interesting part. Direct government grants account for about $292 per vehicle, which is 5 percent of the gap. The biggest single factor is vertical integration: BYD makes about 80 percent of its top-tier components in-house, against 37 percent for Tesla, and that eliminates roughly $2,369 per vehicle in supplier markups. Lower overhead, meaning cheaper engineering talent and administrative cost spread across enormous volume, accounts for another $1,719. And BYD pays its suppliers on 155-day terms, against Tesla's 60, which is worth about $214 per car in float. When people say the Chinese advantage is subsidies, the per-vehicle number says otherwise. When people say it is slave wages, the Tesla Shanghai comparison says otherwise too. The advantage is mostly that BYD decided, twenty years ago, to make its own batteries, its own motors, its own power electronics, and its own semiconductors, and Western automakers decided the opposite.

GM said its next-generation vehicle architecture will provide 40 times more computing power and 30 percent less wiring than before and will expand from the 2028 Cadillac Escalade IQ to its high-volume SUVs, trucks, crossovers, and fourth-generation EVs, which will be powered by lithium manganese-rich (LMR) prismatic batteries

Despite the politicization and perceived consumer pivot away from EVs in America, GM needs to remain globally competitive, so it's doubling down on its fourth generation EVs, with energy-dense, cheaper-to-manufacture LMR batteries, more efficient motors, and state-of-the-art centralized computing architecture. With a stated goal of cutting the traditional four- to five-year concept-to-production time in half, GM is clearly challenging the concept of "China speed," which in the Chinese automotive industry can be as quick as 18 months from design to start of production. In the AI space, GM is smartly collapsing all of its marque-specific apps under the familiar OnStar brand, while providing more features—both on the phone and in the car—than it ever has before.
harshness
Let's tell it like it is. GM's EV efforts are coming from SAIC. The brain trust is almost entirely in China, and GM is hanging off of SAIC's shirt tails.

It is a lot like asserting that the Corvette was designed by Chevrolet when most of it came from the Cadillac CTS-V.

Love this guy's channel. Looks like Walmart has thrown in the towel when it comes to conventional car batteries.

I bought a new AGM battery from Walmart about a year ago, it is already needing replacing. I thought about just buying a regular battery but from what I've read, that might not be a smart move. Might check my Forscan program and see if I can change the battery type from AGM.

When you need a battery, you need a battery.

If you can wait, new technologies are on the not-too-distant horizon.

You're probably doing something wrong if you're only getting a year out of an AGM battery. Heat and infrequent charging both significantly reduce lifetime.

Huh? How can I be doing something wrong.....I took out the original battery, that was 6 yrs old and put in a new one.....kinda hard to screw that up. I figure it was just a bad battery....it happens.

The biggest takeaway I got from this video was the Walmart batteries only had something like 85% of battery life left even though they were brand NEW. The ones from O'Reilly all tested 100% of life left.

I just had to replace a car battery this week and thought I'd look into LiFePo4. Amazon has plenty of them, but all have top posts and only one 'also' has side connections (Group 75).Then I read that they're really lousy in the cold. So, an AGM, but again, almost nothing with side terminals instead of top. In researching that, I read that most mfrs in recent years have dropped side terminals and gone back to the old top posts, which is surprising to me since those are more corrosion-prone, cause the battery to need more space and are generally more hazardous. Finally I just threw up my hands and bought a regular lead-acid at Sam's Club. They had a Group 75 "Duracell" with side terminals only. It was virtually the only such battery with side posts on their shelves

Now right up front....this is NOT intended to devolve into a "pot is good" vs "pot is bad" thread. The whole point is to make you aware of a potential problem that a person can develop when they start smoking pot at a young age. Not that they WILL, but CAN. Kinda like getting lung cancer from smoking cigs....some do, some don't. The purpose of posting this news story is to keep anyone from paying an outrageous emergency room bill......knowledge is power.
While this may not affect you, you might run into someone who is experiencing these symptoms and can share the info. Fortunately, it looks like stopping smoking is the cure and isn't a permanent condition.

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.

Where is it going to come from -- specifically?

Why do you think cleaning technology won't improve in the next few hundred years? HEPA filtration was invented as part of the Manhattan Project.

I don't know, but I still don't like her walking through the station or the academy with out her shoes. It looks unprofessional and very "hippy like" for someone of her status and I personally don't get off to feet, so there is that. ;)

Stay out of my office. I rarely have shoes or socks on in the office. My office and business is at home though :clapping

Say, I don't wear socks or shoes in my house either. But for a captain in Star Fleet it looks bad to be walking around the academy with no shoes. Gives off 1960 Hippie vibes.

Well, look at the way she sat in the Captain's Chair. I didn't say the show should have been called "Captain Chair-Whore" for nothing...

For a whole generation of adults it was in the 1960s and 1970s.

Females wearing any clothing is unthinkable on Ferenginar.
