Coax Cable Resistance

Quality coax cable is critical for weaker sat signal reception. Below is given excerpt from Coaxial Cable - An Overview (click Tech Info - Coaxial Cable) - the article written in simple terms by an experienced Sat Installer. This article section compares RG59 to RG6 cable, and offers his method to calculate max cable length still allowing to control switching sat components.

"That brings us to the point of comparing RG6 vs. RG59

In the old houses we still can meet homeruns made by RG59 cables.

RG59 is a lower grade of coaxial cable than RG6, consisting of a smaller center conductor, a smaller insulating dielectric, and a single outer shield. However, it delivers acceptable performance for CATV. RG-59 has a 22 AWG center conductor.

RG6, on the other hand, has a larger center conductor (18 AWG), a dual or quad shield (2 braids and 2 foils), and a much larger insulating dielectric.

The benefits of using RG6 cable include: more bandwidth, lower susceptibility to interference, and lower attenuation per foot. All of these characteristics allow it to handle a higher bandwidth than RG59 cable. RG6 delivers exceptional performance for CATV, satellite, and all other video applications and is considered the cable of choice for digital TV.

Length of cable

RG59 has electrical 'voltage drop per foot' to a direct current 0.06 V.

RG6 has electrical 'voltage drop per foot' to a direct current 0.04 V. (see the characteristics of the cables)

Voltage drop depends on resistance of the cable. Encyclopedia of Physics states that resistanceof a long cylinder or wire is given by:

R=?× L/A,

where L is a length; A is a cross section area or diameter; ? – resistivity of the material.( Ohm/meter)

That is determines maximum length of cable between LNB and receiver (power source in that case) 125 feet.

125 feet × 0.04V/foot = 5 volts. (difference between 13V and 18V)

Technically since everything has a tolerance so that LNB seems to switch to the Left hand polarization even with lower voltage."

Question:

One question seems obvious from the above calculation is that if one's coax cable length exceeds 100 - 125 ft, he would need to use a powered switch to supply stabilized power to the LNBs independently of the receiver. The switch itself would need to be located no further than 100 ft from both the receiver and each LNB. Is that calculation correct?

Anyone has experience in running longer than 125 ft cables and having no problems with LBN polarity control? What kind of cable worked best for you?

The RG11 Crimper has two crimp slots. One for RG11 (the main one) and another for RG6

Good to see the RG-11 F connectors are easily available.. One thing I remember from working with the larger cable is that the center conductor is larger than RG-6; possibly 16 or 14 gauge? Will the center conductor fit into the standard F-female receptacle?
-C.

Sadoun I only use compression connectors ;)

I think I'll pass on the RG11 right now....got a bunch of good RG6 and dont feel like rerunning all them wires around the house :)

Sadoun shows an old school 11 that was feed-thru (I shudder, its the top one, the pico-macom) which is what your speaking of, where the CC fed thru the connector body and was inserted into the port. It bent the heck out of the port contacts, sometimes shorting the internal contact to the outer metal port and effectively burning out receivers and LNB's, also after that insertion the port was done as far as going back to a RG6 later. All the other connectors shown are captured pin style, when you put the cable in the connector the CC goes into a step down pin and the CC is now RG6 size.

The PPC comes in several configurations, no ws, ws, (both of those come in original static pin where the pin is in place and never moves, and in movable pin where the pin is hiding and when the cable is inserted it moves forward to show the cable is fully inserted), right angle, right angle ws. There's also plenum 11 connectors. We even have a 2 piece hardline style connector with the KS pin, but that's another story.

PPC's VT tool will do 59,6,7,11,and QR320 with 1 tool. It will NOT do RCA and BNC.
Snap and Seal can do 59,6, RCA, and BNC with 1 tool, but then 7,11 requires a different, larger tool.
Digicon and PCT does 59,6,7,11 not sure if they make an RCA and BNC that fits in that same tool, they might.
Stirling doesn't make an 11 I don't think anymore, but it would require a different tool if they do.
Unsure also about Gilberts tool, but you can use any standard length tool for them like the VT or a Ripley CAT-AS and do 59,6,7,11, and QR320.

If I were to buy a compression tool I'd get a PPC or a CablePrep, both have lifetime warranties, no questions asked, you have a mangled up tool that you used as a wheel chock or hammer that you can send the remains in, and they'll give you a brand new tool gratis. Same goes for the CablePrep prep tool (the blocky yellow tool)

I have used Digicon connectors for piece of RG-11 I had for my TV antenna. Since I was only going to install two connectors, I just used a vise and a pair of plyers to compress the connectors. The connector comes with a removable centre pin that is placed over the center conductor of the cable, then the cable is pushed into the connecter. Then it is compressed to lock onto the cable. If I could of bought a connector tool for a reasonable price in my area, it would of been the way to go. The only tool I could find in my area was over $100.00 and was just not worth it for only two connectors. The vice and plyers did do a nice job on the compression, just had to take some time in making sure they compressed evenly.

Over the past few weeks, I have had problems connecting to streaming services (Netflix, HBO et al). When I go to the TV's native Channels, I have no problem. The Dish internet troubleshooter shows I have a good internet connection. I'm wondering whether it's an issue with my internet provider or a problem with the Dish software on the Hopper Plus. Anyone else seeing this?

I have a DISH Hopper 3 (Software H713) with Hopper Plus (Software P15403). I have not tried streaming services but I primarily watch TVB Jadeworld international package which is only available by streaming and when I have an issue, I usually have to go to a non-streaming satellite channel first before the streaming channels will work again. What software versions do you have and what is the error message if any are showing on your screen? or is that Dish downloading logo just stuck and never finishes?

Personally, I tend to be the type that drives a vehicle for a lot of years....do my own oil changes and other fluid changes. Just replaced the spark plugs and a couple coils. Youtube is great for things like this.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Lately my eight year old Dell laptop has been shutting off even when I have a full battery. I have had to keep it plugged up all the time to keep this from happening. Any idea what is causing this? I replaced the battery about three years ago.

A recalibration might be needed. Even if it shows full, the individual cells may have become unbalaced. And the BMS chip in the battery reports false information to the pc.
Try this. Start it up in the bios/uefi and leave it there until the battery dies and it shuts off.
It might just keep running longer than in Windows. Or run for a short while and shut off.
If it's the first case. Probably just needs a balancing. If the latter, the pack might just be dead.
Not throwing stones but perhaps just a cheaply constructed battery with substandard cells. Could be.

Patience. Keep restarting it in bios/uefi until it won't fire up anymore.
Then plug the charger in and let it complete a full charge. And see what happens. If it's better.
Do the same thing one more time. Run it until it dies dead-dead. Then just let it charge, pc shut off.
When charged, it might be better. It might not be.

There are bench jigs that read the actual BMS and override it to let a tech manually monitor and charge the separate packs. They can also reset any "time bombs" in it that cause an otherwise good pack to show bad.
Maybe Santa will be good to me some year.

You might just need a new battery. Maybe the PC power management chip is going. A Dell common thing.
Leaving a laptop plugged in with a full battery is known to reduce the life. Asus for one recommends that you don't leave the charger plugged in all of the time even when shut down. And setting Windows to charge the battery to 85% instead of 100% increases life.
That's all I got.

I set up a music server for my brother a few years ago. It's basically a small headless computer but it needs to have a DHCP IP address reserved for it in the router settings. This was easy to do in his DSL router. He's switching to Starlink now and I was wondering if these setting are easily accessible in the Starlink router. I'm pretty sure he will be getting the latest V5 router.

If you can't get into the router to reserve an IP address just don't use DHCP on the device that needs connected and assign it to a specific IP address in the network settings.

They are not. Your best bet is to set up a third-party router, attached to the Starlink for your server, that you can get into, like a Linksys, etc

The Starlink V5 Install Kit I just got comes with the Mini Router. It is pretty limited in what it can do. For example, it can provide only one IP subnet at a time, no Guest Network, but it does support the pass-thru to a third-party Router. You can also split the Wi-Fi into separate 5 GHz & 2.4 GHz SSIDs to help some IoT devices that don't support 5 GHz bands to work.

The larger Starlink Router that still comes with the V4 Kit does support a Guest Network with separate IPv4 Subnet, but it's $120 from Starlink. And it still won't do DHCP Reservations.
harshness
If you can restrict the DHCP address space to assign addresses to one end of the subnet (i.e. x.x.x.50+), you can manually assign the IP address on pretty much any operating system. This is a default behavior on several popular routers. As the Router Mini only supports 235 devices, I expect that's already done.

Another option is to use a router that supports PoE to power the antenna. This article discusses that option (under PoE Power heading):

Now that I've had the v5 kit with the Mini Router, it's not as bad as I first thought. Yes, no DHCP reservations, but you can set up multiple SSIDs that have separate IPv4 subnets, and like the big brother, you can select from 192.168.x.0/24 or 10.x.0.0/16 (where "x" is 1-4).

You can also split a subnet and have different SSIDs for the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz channels to handle some IoT devices. I haven't discovered what subnet the 2nd NIC on the router assigns, I'm guessing it's the first subnet.
