Today is my last day with E* due to the incompitent installer they sent me today.

On Friday my VIP 722 blew and wouldn't even power on. I called tech support and was told that they would waive all fees (including the $5.99 service plan) and would be out today.

The tech came out today while I was out on an errand and the first blow came when he told my wife "You will need to pay $5.99 for the service plan and the cancellation fee of $25 should you decide to cancel it" (not true as the $25 does not begin until February... but I digress)

Next he took out my broken 722 and hooked up the new one. He then asked my wife for the tv remote to set it up.....

side story time: last year I paid to have my tv calibrated and have not changed it since

... he then went into the picture settings, set it to sport, reduced the brightness from 100 to 95, and set it as my preference overwriting my calibration settings!

I get home and have a picture that is so bright and with white balance off so much that it looked like a white screen with some colors on it. I called up E* to complain and was told "it will take 3-4 weeks to investigate your claim and then we can proceed from there. Please do not change your settings from where they are until we inspect them. This could take 1-2 weeks pissed as all hell I asked for someone higher up to try to make sense of this bull as I was about to blow a gasket. The supervisor told me that was they best I could do and they would need to see it exactly as it is or else there was nothing they could do.

I was not going to keep my tv with these settings for 2-4 weeks so they can "evaluate my complaint" and when the company the installer worked for called us we were told that "we should have specified our wishes when the installer got there." I told them I was under the impression my wishes were for a working receiver and nothing else.

As a result, despite my disdain for Comcast, they will be out tomorrow to do an install.

First as I was not here I do not know why the hell he went into the settings... as for the settings being changed by someone else prior... at 7am I watched the local news. at 8am I left my house with everything still intact to go to the office real quick.

Typically I do what others have said and tell the guy to sit on the chair while I hook things up. (and it's what I intend to do tomorrow with the installer that comes out)

In response to the two questions asked of me:

1) I was given the basic settings (Brightness, Contrast, Backlight) which has improved the picture some but I don't have the other settings.

2) I was told by tech support that they "needed" to send someone out. My assumption was that it was better to get a receiver today than to wait until Wednesday (Monday is a federal holiday which means it wouldn't even ship until Tuesday so if they overnighted it I'd get it Wednesday). I had my wife on the phone throughout the install except for five minutes when I called dish because he was trying to put me on the service plan which I was told I would not need and $6 may not be much for one month but if I'm told an additional fee will not apply then it is not going to apply. I had that resolved and called back and he was packing up to go so within that five minute window of me calling customer service is when it happened.

Also, in response to the comment that I may have messed it up... I do not go into my tv settings at all... there is no need as everything runs from my touch screen or the universal remote (so no reason for him to even program a remote since there were two other ways to control the devices without use of a dish remote). I do installs at my work (I am the co-dish installer at my company as well as the on-site av specialist/co-meeting planner) but my eye for color is not good enough to be doing calibrations. My 722 sounded like a jet engine taking off and had a green flashing light on it. The receiver would not even reset and if I unplugged it and plugged it back in the fan/hard drive spun just as fast as before. I watched OTA and Blu-Ray fine all day Friday and yesterday with no color problems.

At any rate the 211s and 722 are waiting off to the side for their respective boxes to go back to their homes.

whatchel, I didn't think so but there is a noticeable difference from the OTA to the HDMI1 that I setup myself earlier so I'm going to try to copy those settings as best I can and try to recover it myself that way... regardless the guy will be out this week to if nothing else say "good job" and I'll make sure I write it down on paper. (My wife says we had something that I typed and saved on my computer... not much of a help since she doesn't remember which one)

I had my old RPTV pro calibrated a few years back. I no longer have it. ( sold it to my brother in law ) . Anyways, I'm pretty sure when he was all done, the settings were saved as the factory default. If something ever happened to the settings, all I had to do was a reset and I'd be back in business.

Bobby
But an ISF calibrator can rest your factory settings to be the default and that default is the settings that he/she set.
lakebum431
Interesting. You're saying they can set both greyscale and user settings as the default for all modes? That was not done on my calibration of my Pioneer 6020 and I was not aware that it could be done. Thanks for the info.

??

Not making light of your situation, you have every right to be PO'd because you paid to have the set calibrated & the installer went in to the user settings & screwed it up with out the need / authority to do so, but I have to ask & please don't take this as a bash on you, but by you're quote above, how could you really tell the difference between adjusting the user controls yourself till you got a picture you liked & the paid calibration picture? I've had 2 LCD's (not many, I know) but neither were calibrated. I just went into the customer controls and worked each one until I was satisfied w/ the picture... it may take a few days of tweaking, but I always made it there.

I've done TV work for years in the past (not doing it now) but I always had to cave in to the customer because when ever a set (CRT, not Panel) came in for repair, we always tuned the drives, bias & customer controls for the best pix. However, if they've been looking @ a pix w/ a high red drive, for example (really red backgrounds, etc) they'd always say that the picture wasn't as good as it was before they had it fixed. Guess it's just what you're used to, huh?

If its really messed, reset to factory defaults and look up your tv's owner thread at avsforum, usually people post settings.

If they adjust and set calibration through the service menu then thats the new default, so yes re-setting to factory default from the user menu will bring back the new calibration settjngs. Their is a key stroke sequence to reset service menu settings to factory defalut. Anyway, thats how my sony works I found out after messing up some setting in the service menu.

For some reason, the satelliteguys.us site is loading a lot slower than usual on both Chrome on my Asus laptop and Safari on my iPhone.
I'm also seeing longer appearances of the blue bar at the top and the "3 blue bars" loading symbol.
Is anyone else also having the same problem? Thanks in advance.

As dated as it is, PHP is eminently adept at projects like a forum. With modules, it is competitive in flexibility and computational efficiency with tools like Node.js or Ruby (where you must choose from many outboard tools).

When walmart set a price...they weigh the container and the product...the product label only shows the weight of the product...I am sure if you brought your own plastic baggies to bring the product home you could get the cheaper price

Then they are stupid. Everyone knows that the price per ounce should be the price per ounce of actual product.

Well, the bag can't weigh that much, right? But by law food product packaging must display the actual net weight of the product, i.e., the contents of the container, so by any logic, if not law, a store's stated per-ounce cost should reflect that figure. But since there's not any law regulating shelf statements, a store can say whatever it wants without violating any rules. So I guess the answer is more consumer legislation. Or simply caveat emptor.

But a box can weigh more than an ounce..maybe 2...a can might weigh 5 ounces..a bag...not much
dishstaller
.a bag...not much
Well, according to the price per ounce on that first bag of coffee he mentions, that would mean the bag weighed over 6 ounces. That bag does NOT weigh 6 ounces. According to Google, an empty bag weighs half an ounce.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

For quite a while now, people with a VIP211k have been losing their recordings on their activated external HDDs... even when there's nothing physically wrong with HDD. I believe this is an intentional and underhanded tactic that Dish is pulling in an attempt to force users away from the VIP211k.

They are obviously regretting that they ever let users have a "non-dvr" dvr in the first place. You would think they would be happy charging you a $40 one time fee... and then be happy letting the customer be the one responsible for HDD failures.

Dish clearly hates the 211k bitter-clingers. This recording deletion problem is intentional (IMO), and I think it is just one more tool that they are using. Hopper and a 2-year agreement... that's what they want you to have. Think about that... a 2-year agreement... with a company $30 Billion in debt (that's with a B). What happens when all that debt causes them to drop the channel that may have been your whole reason for having Dish in the first place? Guess who's stuck with a service that no longer suits their needs... for the remainder of the 2-year agreement.

On top of that, they don't want you to install it yourself. I purchased and installed all my equipment myself. That used to be common. Now, they lie to me and tell me that my dish must be updated to use a Hopper. Funny thing is... they don't even know what dish I have because they didn't install it, and I didn't tell them. If you ask what type of dish/LNBs the hopper needs... good luck getting an answer. All they know is that whatever you have needs to be upgraded by an installer.

It is quite apparent to me that they care much more about staying in their box, than they do working with the customer. That's too bad, because it hasn't always been that way. It's like they are totally unaware of the current business environment that they are trying to compete in.

I have been a customer since 2010. I will be cancelling my service before the next period. Yeah, I know, my $1,200 a year won't make a difference to them. It just seems like they have forgotten who needs who, especially when you consider the competition in today's streaming world. But hey, they will have succeed in forcing me off the 211k.

Unless things have changed at Dish, which is entirely possible, they won't activate the 211, even as a replacement. I gave one to a customer a while back....which when I turned it off I made sure to tell the CSR I wanted it freed up so another customer could use it, I was assured it was.....and when they called to swap out there's they were told it couldn't be done. Now like I said, things MIGHT HAVE CHANGED.

It hasn't changed. When I cancelled my service the other day, they told me I didn't need to return the receiver (which I already knew because I purchased it).

But in addition to that, the young man told me not to sell it, but to take it to a recycling place. The reason he gave for the advice was because 211Ks can no longer be activated.

So as far as the VIP211k goes... once grandpa dies, he's dead.
T
They tell you to trash it and not to sell simply because they're phasing them out, not particularly because someone might be "confused" into buying it and not be able to activate. They tell people that in every case where they're not acting to get a box back, either from a replacement or service cancel.
Corrado
Although my VIP211K hasn't been subscribed or connected to a dish in probably 5 years since canceling service, my 1 TB HDD full of programming still works fine.

Upon occasion I power it up to watch something I recorded as far back as 2010. The last time I had it going in September it even let me rescan the local OTA channels which I think it refused at some earlier time. I will use it until the day it fails but this topic makes me think some software download is responsible for current subscribers.

Since it hasn't been connected to a dish in that long, it probably missed the firmware update that they designed to cause the problem.

I think they were more of a transitional receiver bridging the VIPs to the Hopper. They were a PITA to install and were buggy. Personally, I thought at the time that they were the best receiver out there. The versatility of the VIP's with the new Hopper GUI and, by far, the coolest-looking front plate and lighting.

I don't recall that they came out just before hopper, but rather that they came out even before 722. Or could be thinking of 921.

As to the title pf the post, "rare" does not necessarily mean valuable or desirable.

You are thinking of the 921. The 922 was the first DVR with Sling functionality built in (that was eventually disabled along with the Sling Adapter for the 722s and the 1st Hopper because they relied on now-defunct Adobe Flash technology). With the bugginess described by others and the removal of its marquee feature (Sling) the 922 faded into obscurity once the Hopper 2 with built in Sling was released and they finally made the concept into a fully functional product.
dishdude
I had one, the front panel lighting was cool, the menus were fresh and a lot more modern looking than the ViPs. However, it was very buggy and the Sling functionality just didn't work well - I think it was due to internet speeds at the time. I think I had to pay $40 for the Sling app on my phone iirc.

I had both the 921 and the 922. I used to buy them from DishDepot.com in Florida and trade in my older owned receiver towards the newest receiver. The 921 was a reboot receiver and the sling part was hit or miss. I look back on all those receivers I paid for over 25 years and I think it was just TV. If I had that money back now I would be lot richer. My Owned Hopper 3 is sitting in a drawer in my office not being used.
T
That was part of the Ergen scheme, to sell the product as well as the service. And who didn't want the best box?

Maybe they went to the hopper because they were running out of 3-digit model #s- 1022 would have been kinda clunky. Folks would have tried to say "one-thousand and twenty two" instead of "ten-twenty-two".

Like some say "two thousand and twenty six".

Every time my Dish contract comes up I weigh the options of keeping Dish or switch to streaming. Right now I can watch/record the OTA channels vis my HDHomerun. I also can stream CBS and NBC via the Paramount+ and Peacock apps. What I would need to find is how to watch the Food Network, HGTV, Syfy, USA, Hallmark channels, Great American Family, Lifetime channels plus a few more with an app or two. My current Dish bill is $118, so I should be able to get a few apps for a lot less.

Any suggestions? I would want the best picture quality and audio quality I could get.

Does that raise, or lower, the overall price? Our State Government has been doing everything it can to minimize the impact of the current situation and put a freeze on the State Taxes on fuel sales at the pump. That's why we're still under $4.00/gal. while across the border in Michigan it's much higher.
