One of the amazing things about the NHL is all the traditions wrapped up in the sport. For some reason, even though I'm a huge NBA fan, I cannot think of many traditions from professional basketball.

There are many traditions in college basketball, but that's not what I'm talking about. I want to know about the NBA.

In the NHL you have traditions of the sport itself:

- Throwing hats on the ice when a player scores three goals in one game

- The handshake line at the end of each playoff round

- Players growing playoff beards until their team is eliminated

- The Stanley Cup itself, the most iconic trophy in all of sport

- A new tradition like the Winter Classic played outdoors every year on January 1

- Serenading the opposing team's goalie during the playoffs

- Announcing the three stars of the game to the crowd after every game

There are also countless traditions of individual teams:

- The 'Ole' chant in Montreal (they were in rare form last night - unbelievable)

- The singer holding the mike up and letting the entire crowd sing the National Anthem at Edmonton playoff games

- Throwing octopus onto the ice in Detroit

- Ranger fans chanting 'Potvin Sucks' 5-10 times a game, even though Potvin retired more than 20 years ago. We do not forget what he did

- Blackhawk and Ranger fans completely drowning out the National Anthem with noise, something that has to be seen in person to be believed

- The 'whiteout' that goes back to Winnipeg and Quebec City, when they were in the NHL

- New Jersey losing in the first round every year

- Islander fans going to games dressed as empty seats

(sorry, could not resist the last two!)

- St Louis ringing a loud bell after they score a goal, one ding for every goal they've scored so far in the game

- 'Barney knows hockey' in Carolina

- Flag waving that started with Roger Neilson coaching in Vancouver a long time ago

- The 'C' of red in Calgary

- Playing 'The Rangers Victory Song' at the Garden after a win, a song that goes back to the 1930's

- The Philadelphia Flyers using Kate Smith singing God Bless America as their good luck charm in the playoffs

I'm sure I'm missing a few, that's just off the top of my head.

College football and basketball are laden with these type of traditions, if you would like to start another thread about them please feel free. I can think of a whole bunch in the NFL and MLB too.

It's the NBA where I am coming up short, though. This is what I've thought of:

- The annual Christmas Day game

- The Lebron chalk thing

- The Detroit announcer (Zinkoff?) who has very imaginative ways of announcing 'Detroit basketball' when the ball goes out of bounds

Please help me out here...what am I missing in the NBA?

Thanks

I think a pretty big tradition is the NHL fans getting insecure because nobody wants to cover their sport on TV, so they come in here and whine

MY you are an expert at missing the point.
How in the world did you get so good at it?

Just to be fair...the Canadian viewers needs to be included since both leagues have sports teams north of the border. Given this demographic the NHL pulls in a larger television audience than the NBA. Additionally, Gary Bettman almost single handedly destroyed the NHL due to his ineptness...the league is just starting to recover from his moneyshines. Oh, here's a good article on fan enthusiasm... NHL vs. NBA: Hockey winning in attendance, fan enthusiasm? - Puck Daddy - NHL Blog - Yahoo! Sports

Article on NBA viewing in Canada

"Then again, the NBA playoffs are barely on the radar up in Canada. (TSN's two playoff games have averaged a paltry 67,500. Rogers Sportsnet has carried three games averaging 55,000 viewers. The Score's average for its first five broadcasts is 21,000."

Now let's look at the NHL Playoff ratings in Canada...

"According to the NHL, CBC is averaging 1,268,000 viewers for 10 broadcasts through April 18, a 33 per cent increase over last season's average of 951,000 viewers. Meanwhile, TSN is averaging 992,000 viewers for nine telecasts over the same period, a 112 per cent increase over last year (467,000 viewers). "

Again, both leagues have Canadian teams so you must include ratings north of the border in order to make a fair comparison. ;)

Oh, and you need to include the local television markets (e.g., Fox Sports) ratings since Versus (while getting better) is still a joke compared to a channel like TNT. For examples, the Chicago and Detroit are markets are each reaching 400,000 homes..and even non-traditional hockey towns like Washington DC games are reaching 300,000 homes this playoff season.

Bettman...This is the person that stated there were too many teams in the NY Metro market. His statement was published in the papers... Right in the middle of the NJ Devils run to their first of three Stanley Cup wins.
Ironically, both the Rangers and Isles missed the playoffs that year. Bettman was leaning toward enticing then Devils owners to move the team Nashville, TN...
Bettman got his wish when the NHL expanded to Nashville. The Preds have been doing fairly well in regular season play and attendance is reasonable. All this while the Islanders have failed to succeed, still play in an antiquated building and have yet to find ownership that is willing to spend the kind of money it takes to keep elite players. The Rangers swimming in money can't seem to get out of first gear no matter which mercenary they pay.
Not a bash on the Rangers or Islanders, but an example of how Bettman's comments were so off the mark.

The Sharks, (and other teams) salute the fans at center ice after home games, they also autograph sticks for the top 3 stars of the game and skate out to give the autographed sticks to kids after the game.

Season 2 order already in hand:

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

Here i am over a year later and just finished season 1. Not great but not as bad as I was expecting. Did not care for the barefoot captain stuff but overall ok. Actually looking forward to see what they did for season 2.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.

Where is it going to come from -- specifically?

Why do you think cleaning technology won't improve in the next few hundred years? HEPA filtration was invented as part of the Manhattan Project.

I don't know, but I still don't like her walking through the station or the academy with out her shoes. It looks unprofessional and very "hippy like" for someone of her status and I personally don't get off to feet, so there is that. ;)

Stay out of my office. I rarely have shoes or socks on in the office. My office and business is at home though :clapping

I just thought her behavior, including the bare feet thing, was disrespectful to her position.

The future of Stargate is in question today, as SCI FI Channel has cancelled the long-running Stargate SG-1, Multichannel News reported today and a GateWorld source has confirmed. The news regrettably follows the airing of the show's milestone two-hundredth episode on Friday.

Stargate Atlantis, meanwhile, has been renewed for a fourth season, with the network hoping to see that the spin-off series can stand alone, according to a source.

They didn't sell many, they were pricey and not out long. Quickly got replaced by the Hopper.
T
They were high-end specialty, somewhat buggy and the 612/622/722 just overwhelmed it in popularity.
HipKat
I think they were more of a transitional receiver bridging the VIPs to the Hopper. They were a PITA to install and were buggy. Personally, I thought at the time that they were the best receiver out there. The versatility of the VIP's with the new Hopper GUI and, by far, the coolest-looking front plate and lighting.

Well if it is because of reliability that wouldnt shock me.I went through 5 or 6 of them in little over 2 years. I loved the Sling when it worked! Saved lots of money having it in the day. That was probably 15 or 16 years ago?

I don't recall that they came out just before hopper, but rather that they came out even before 722. Or could be thinking of 921.

As to the title pf the post, "rare" does not necessarily mean valuable or desirable.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....
